There was no official, universally accepted 2022 ranking of Silicon Valley’s richest women. The most defensible answer is an editorial reconstruction using published 2022 estimates, a broad Silicon Valley definition, and explicit labels for inherited, settlement-derived and operating wealth. On that basis, Laurene Powell Jobs belongs near the top—her omission from a widely reproduced list is its largest flaw.
How this 2022 ranking is defined
“Silicon Valley” is used here in a hybrid sense: a substantial connection to the Bay Area technology ecosystem through residence, founding, executive work, investing or a historically important technology company. That is broader than a strict Santa Clara County residence test and narrower than simply listing every wealthy woman whose fortune came from technology.
- Currency: U.S. dollars.
- Valuation: estimates tied to a stated 2022 snapshot where available. Forbes used March 11 for its global billionaire list, September 2 for its U.S. women’s ranking and May 13 for its self-made-women list. Those dates are not interchangeable because technology stocks moved sharply during 2022.
- Wealth: net worth, not salary or liquid cash. Public shares, private-company stakes, trusts, taxes, debt and charitable transfers can change the result.
- Family and settlement wealth: included when it is technology-derived, but identified rather than described as operating or self-made wealth.
The reproduced list that prompted this topic was published later and labels its figures “as of 2022”; it does not provide a consistent calculation date. The table below therefore presents a transparent reconstruction, not an official historical leaderboard.
Forbes’ September 2, 2022 U.S. snapshot, its March 11 global snapshot and the reproduced Silicon Valley list are the principal reference points.

The 10 richest women associated with Silicon Valley in 2022
| Rank | Woman | Estimated 2022 net worth | Main source of wealth | Silicon Valley connection and wealth type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Laurene Powell Jobs | $12.6 billion (September 2 snapshot) | Apple and Disney holdings inherited from Steve Jobs | Silicon Valley-linked family wealth; major technology and media investor |
| 2 | MacKenzie Scott | $37.7 billion (September 2 snapshot) | Amazon shares received in her 2019 divorce settlement | Broad technology-wealth inclusion; not a conventional Silicon Valley operator |
| 3 | Melinda French Gates | $6.1 billion (March 11 global snapshot; another list gives $10.4 billion) | Microsoft-related divorce and transferred wealth | Broad technology-wealth inclusion; Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington |
| 4 | Meg Whitman | $3.1 billion (reproduced 2022 estimate) | Executive equity from eBay and HP | Former Bay Area technology chief executive; operating and equity wealth |
| 5 | Jayshree Ullal | $2.2 billion (Forbes self-made-women coverage) | Arista Networks equity and executive leadership | Strong Silicon Valley business inclusion; self-made classification in Forbes’ methodology |
| 6 | Alice Schwartz | $2.3 billion (reproduced estimate) | Bio-Rad Laboratories, which she cofounded | Bay Area founder-family wealth; valuation is disputed by Forbes’ 2022 U.S. coverage |
| 7 | Sheryl Sandberg | $1.6 billion (reproduced estimate) | Meta executive compensation and stock | Former Facebook/Meta COO; executive-equity wealth |
| 8 | Safra Catz | $1.5 billion (reproduced estimate) | Oracle executive compensation and stock | Longstanding Silicon Valley technology executive; Oracle is now headquartered in Austin |
| 9 | Marissa Mayer | $770 million (reproduced estimate) | Google and Yahoo executive equity, plus later ventures | Former Google and Yahoo executive; equity-based wealth |
| 10 | Susan Wojcicki | $765 million (reproduced estimate) | Early Google equity and YouTube leadership | Former YouTube CEO and early Google employee; equity-based wealth |
The numerical order is imperfect because it combines snapshots from different dates and sources. In particular, Scott’s September estimate is higher than Powell Jobs’ but her connection is technology-derived rather than conventionally Silicon Valley-based. A strict geographic ranking would move her and French Gates out of the main ten.
Why Laurene Powell Jobs belongs in the conversation
Forbes valued Powell Jobs at $12.6 billion as of September 2, 2022, largely from Apple and Disney holdings inherited from Steve Jobs. Forbes has also explicitly described her as Silicon Valley’s richest woman. That places her above every woman in the reproduced ten except its two broad technology-wealth entries, Scott and French Gates.
Rank #2
Her fortune should not be described as founder-earned wealth: it is principally inherited technology and media wealth, later deployed through investing and philanthropy. See Forbes’ profile and Forbes’ Silicon Valley profile.
Silicon Valley wealth versus broader technology wealth
MacKenzie Scott
Scott’s fortune came primarily from Amazon shares received from Jeff Bezos in their 2019 divorce. Amazon is a technology company, but Scott was not a Silicon Valley founder or operating executive. She belongs in a broad “women whose fortunes came from technology” list; including her in a strict regional list requires a qualification.
Melinda French Gates
French Gates’ wealth is tied to Microsoft and her divorce settlement from Bill Gates. Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, so she is better treated as a technology-linked billionaire than as a geographically Silicon Valley-based one. Forbes’ March 11, 2022 global estimate was $6.1 billion, while the reproduced list reports $10.4 billion without a matching valuation date.
The Alice Schwartz discrepancy
The reproduced ranking gives Schwartz $2.3 billion. Forbes’ 2022 America’s Richest Women coverage, however, says she fell out of the Forbes 400 after Bio-Rad shares dropped 42%. That does not prove the reproduced figure is impossible—the dates and methodologies may differ—but it means $2.3 billion should not be presented as an uncontested September 2022 value.
Rank #4
What “self-made” means here
Self-made is a classification used by particular rankings, not a universal accounting standard. Forbes reported that only 101 of the 327 women on its 2022 global billionaire list were categorized as self-made. In this group, Ullal and Gouw are entrepreneurial or investment examples; Sandberg, Catz, Mayer and Wojcicki accumulated substantial equity through executive or early-employee roles; Powell Jobs, Scott and French Gates received fortunes through inheritance or divorce-related transfers.
Forbes explains its self-made-women methodology and May 13, 2022 valuation date in this methodology article and its 2022 announcement.

Why rankings change under a stricter test
Remove Scott and French Gates for a residence-or-Bay-Area-company test and the next candidates include venture capitalist Theresia Gouw, whose reproduced estimate is $600 million, along with founders and investors such as Anne Wojcicki, Neha Narkhede, Michelle Zatlyn, Jacqueline Reses, Pamela Lopker and Therese Tucker. Their inclusion depends on a consistent valuation source and whether the test measures residence, company headquarters, founding role or investment activity.
Company geography also changes over time: Oracle is now based in Austin, while its historic Silicon Valley identity remains relevant; former executives can retain large holdings long after leaving a company; and private-company stakes may be priced from funding rounds rather than a liquid market.
Bottom line on the 2022 list
The useful answer is not a timeless top ten. It is a dated reconstruction with labels. Laurene Powell Jobs is the clearest correction to the commonly reproduced list; Scott and French Gates are defensible only with a broad technology-wealth definition; and every dollar figure should be read as a snapshot affected by share prices, ownership structure and valuation method.
