You cannot prove a website is legitimate from HTTPS, a padlock, or polished design alone. Use layered verification: inspect the exact domain, check its technical safety status, independently confirm the operator, review the offer and payment terms, and stop when major questions remain unresolved.
“Legal,” “legitimate” and “safe” are different
These labels answer different questions, and a website can pass one test while failing another.
| Question | What it means |
|---|---|
| Technically safe | No currently identified malware, phishing or other technical threat in the security service you checked. |
| Authentic | The site is operated by the organization it claims to represent. |
| Legitimate business | An identifiable operator actually provides the advertised product or service. |
| Lawful | The operator and transaction comply with laws, licensing rules and jurisdictional requirements. |
| Good purchase decision | The price, delivery promise, cancellation terms and risk are acceptable to you. |
An ordinary visitor usually cannot establish legality conclusively from a website. The practical goal is to gather strong evidence of authenticity, identify fraud indicators and avoid high-risk actions while uncertainty remains.
1. Read the exact web address

https://is the protocol.shopis a subdomain.example.comis the registrable domain—the part that normally identifies who controls the site./account/loginis the page path.- Everything after
?is a query string, often used for tracking or campaign data.
Read the registrable domain from right to left. paypal.com has registrable domain paypal.com; paypal.example.com belongs to example.com, not automatically PayPal. In example.com.paypal-security.test, the registrable domain is paypal-security.test. Likewise, paypal-login.example.net belongs to example.net.
Check for misspellings, added hyphens, words such as “secure,” “verify,” “support,” “billing” or “login,” unusual but not inherently fraudulent top-level domains, shortened links, redirects and look-alike international characters. paypaI.com may use a capital “I” where readers expect a lowercase “l.” A brand name in a path, subdomain or page title does not establish ownership.
2. Do not trust the link or search position
A scammer can place an impersonation site in a paid search result, social-media advertisement, email, text message or convincing support listing. The FTC warns that sponsored results and misleading contact details can direct people to fake sites: FTC guidance on search-result scams.
- Do not click an unexpected message or advertisement.
- Open a new browser tab.
- Type the organization’s known address yourself, or retrieve it from a statement, card, official app or previously verified bookmark.
- Reach support or account access from that known-good site.
Use the same method for banks, government agencies, utilities, airlines, retailers and software companies. A familiar logo, phone number or search knowledge panel is not independent verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
3. Check for technical danger
Paste the complete URL into Google Safe Browsing’s site-status check. Google describes Safe Browsing as scanning for identified threats such as phishing, malware, unwanted software, social engineering and malicious-ad activity. Chrome’s built-in protection warns about these categories and is enabled by default according to Chrome Help.
- Danger or browser warning: Leave. Do not enter credentials, download files or override the warning.
- No warning: The service has not currently identified that URL as dangerous. It does not establish honest delivery, refunds, licensing or legal compliance.
- New or changing site: A clean result may be less informative because databases cannot identify every new scam immediately. Google says entries can be added within minutes of detection and may take an average of about half an hour to appear externally; this is a system statistic, not a promise that every scam will be found quickly (Google’s explanation).
Legitimate sites can also be compromised, so a familiar domain does not make every page safe.
4. Verify who operates the site
Look for a legal or trading name, physical address, working telephone number, domain-matching business email, service hours, terms, privacy policy, refund and cancellation rules, delivery and warranty information, and—where relevant—company registration or professional licensing.

Verify those details elsewhere. Search the business independently, compare its address and phone number with established sources, and use an official regulator for financial, medical, legal, insurance, pharmacy, investment or other regulated services. Call numbers from a bank statement, official bill, card or known-good website—not from an unsolicited message. A copied privacy policy or contact page proves little by itself.
5. Use domain-registration data as supporting evidence
For generic domains, check ICANN Lookup. Its RDAP-based results may show creation, expiration and update dates, registrar, status, nameservers, DNSSEC and publicly available registrant information. The ICANN FAQ explains that the tool may fall back to WHOIS when RDAP data is unavailable and that not all registration data must be public.
A very recent registration, frequent domain changes or registration details that conflict with the claimed business are warning factors. Privacy or proxy protection is not proof of fraud; it is simply one less verification source. Conversely, an old domain may have been hacked or purchased after expiration. Domain age is never a pass/fail test.

6. Inspect the offer and checkout
Before paying, confirm the seller identity, final total and currency, shipping timeline, subscription or auto-renewal language, refund and cancellation procedure, and any billing descriptor. Watch for the checkout switching unexpectedly to another domain or requesting more information than the transaction needs.
Common warning patterns include prices far below credible competitors, endlessly resetting “today only” deadlines, guaranteed profits or cures, surprise fees, copied product descriptions, inconsistent company names, generic reviews, no meaningful return process and support available only through a messaging app. These are indicators, not mathematical proof: small legitimate businesses can have simple sites, while polished scams can imitate major retailers.

7. Red flags that should end the interaction
- The browser or Safe Browsing displays a danger warning.
- The URL imitates a known organization or uses confusing look-alike characters.
- The operator will not identify itself or cannot be independently confirmed.
- You are pressured to act secretly or immediately.
- The site requests passwords, one-time codes, recovery codes or remote-access software.
- It asks you to disable security tools or bypass a browser warning.
- It demands gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or payment to an unrelated person.
8. Make a risk-based decision
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| Lower risk | Proceed only when the domain matches the expected organization, the operator is independently confirmed, no safety warning appears, policies are plausible and payment details are consistent. |
| Medium risk | Pause and verify further when the domain is new, history is limited, the offer is unusually attractive, contact details are hard to confirm or the link came from an unexpected ad or message. |
| High risk | Leave immediately when there is a security warning, impersonation, secrecy or urgency, demands for credentials or remote access, refusal to identify the business, or pressure to use irreversible payment. |
Legitimate exceptions exist: a new business may have little history, a small business may have few reviews, a marketplace may contain a fraudulent individual seller, and an international operator may use a different country or payment processor. The business should still explain those relationships and remain independently verifiable.
9. If you already clicked, paid or shared information
Password or account credentials
- Change the password immediately through the real service’s known-good website.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it and enable multifactor authentication.
- Review recovery addresses, phone numbers, active sessions and forwarding rules.
- Contact the real organization through an independently verified channel.
Payment information
- Call the card issuer or bank immediately and ask whether the account or card should be blocked or replaced.
- Monitor transactions and dispute unauthorized charges through the issuer’s process.
- Save receipts, emails, screenshots, URLs and delivery promises.
Downloads or remote access
- Disconnect the device from sensitive accounts if compromise is suspected.
- Run updated security software and remove unfamiliar applications and extensions.
- Change passwords from a separate trusted device and seek professional help for suspected malware or remote-access compromise.
Personal information
Monitor financial and account activity, take identity-theft precautions appropriate to the information exposed, and report the incident.
10. Report the site
U.S. readers can report fraud at ReportFraud.gov, submit spam, phishing or malware reports through Google’s reporting routes, and file an internet-crime complaint at the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection, cybercrime, financial and data-protection authorities. The FTC’s general guidance is available at How to Avoid a Scam and its phishing explanation at Phishing Scams.
