Why Sen. Elizabeth Warren Linked Apple’s “Green Texts” to the iPhone Antitrust Case

Warren said Apple’s green-message experience can reinforce iPhone loyalty. The DOJ’s case is broader, remains unproven, and green bubbles now include RCS as well as SMS and MMS.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, argued in April 2024 that Apple’s green-message experience can pressure people to stay with iPhones. Her comment supported the U.S. Department of Justice’s broader antitrust lawsuit, but it was a political allegation—not a court ruling that Apple is illegally monopolizing smartphones. The technology has also changed: on compatible iPhones, a green bubble can now represent RCS as well as SMS or MMS.

What Elizabeth Warren actually said

On April 18, 2024, Warren posted a video saying that green-message conversations were “ruining relationships” and presenting them as one way Apple maintains control over the smartphone market. Her argument was that Apple’s blue-versus-green distinction makes conversations with Android users less capable or less socially desirable, potentially encouraging people to buy or keep an iPhone.

Warren had separately criticized Apple in December 2023 after Apple blocked Beeper Mini, an Android application that attempted to provide access to iMessage. The Beeper dispute and the 2024 green-text video were related politically, but they were separate episodes. Warren’s April statement was mainly a public argument in support of the DOJ’s Apple case.

Why green bubbles became an antitrust issue

In Apple’s Messages app, blue bubbles identify iMessage and green bubbles identify messages sent through non-iMessage systems. Warren’s theory has three steps:

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  1. Cross-platform messages may offer fewer features or lower-quality media than iMessage.
  2. Those differences can create social pressure, particularly in group chats and among teenagers.
  3. Pressure and inconvenience can raise the cost of switching from an iPhone to an Android phone, reinforcing Apple’s position.

That is an argument about switching costs and network effects, not a claim that a color by itself violates antitrust law. Carrier messaging works with broad reach by default; services such as WhatsApp, Signal and Facebook Messenger generally require everyone in a conversation to use the same app. The DOJ has argued that this default advantage matters even though alternative apps exist. The DOJ’s messaging-app filing discusses that interoperability issue.

What the DOJ’s lawsuit alleges

On March 21, 2024, the DOJ, joined by 16 states and the District of Columbia, sued Apple under Section 2 of the Sherman Act. The complaint alleges that Apple maintained or attempted to maintain monopoly power in defined U.S. smartphone markets through exclusionary conduct. The lawsuit is broader than messaging: it also addresses smartwatches, digital wallets, cloud gaming, web browsers and other ecosystem restrictions. See the DOJ case announcement and the original complaint.

For messaging, the government alleges that Apple made cross-platform communication less attractive by limiting functionality, reducing media quality and creating differences in privacy and security. The DOJ’s public explanation describes green bubbles, grainy video, missing typing indicators, unavailable editing features and the lack of encryption in the SMS/MMS context. Those are allegations in a pending case, not established findings. The DOJ also alleged that Apple’s U.S. share exceeded 65% of the overall smartphone market and 70% of its defined “performance smartphone” market at the time of filing; those figures depend on the government’s market definitions and have not themselves been adjudicated. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s remarks summarize the government’s theory.

Apple’s defense

Apple has argued that the suit threatens the product differentiation that makes the iPhone distinct. Its position is that forcing interoperability or redesigning services could make the iPhone more like Android, interfere with integrated hardware and software, and create privacy and security problems. That is Apple’s defense against the government’s allegations, not a final legal rebuttal. The case asks whether Apple’s conduct unlawfully maintains market power—not whether consumers may choose an iPhone or whether iMessage is popular. Apple’s response is reported by Scripps News.

What a green message means in 2026

Bubble color is now only a visual clue, not a complete technical diagnosis. Apple says a green message may be sent through RCS, SMS or MMS. A message can also appear green when the recipient uses a non-Apple device, iMessage is disabled or temporarily unavailable, or settings need updating. Apple explains those causes here.

Feature iMessage RCS on supported iPhones SMS/MMS
Bubble color Blue Green Green
Compatible participants Apple devices Supported iPhones, Android phones, carriers and regions Broad carrier compatibility
High-resolution photos and video Yes Generally supported Limited
Typing and read indicators Yes Supported by RCS implementations Generally unavailable
End-to-end encryption Yes, according to Apple Not universal; Apple documents a beta feature in iOS 26.5 for supported carriers No
Availability Apple ecosystem Requires iOS 18 or later, carrier support and compatible settings Requires carrier service

Apple’s current documentation says RCS can provide high-resolution media, links, delivery receipts, read receipts and typing indicators, but availability varies by carrier and region. Apple separately says end-to-end encrypted RCS is a beta feature in iOS 26.5 for supported carriers. Therefore, it is inaccurate in 2026 to call every green message a basic, unencrypted SMS. It is equally inaccurate to assume every RCS conversation has identical features or encryption. See Apple’s RCS requirements and feature notes and its comparison of iMessage, RCS, SMS and MMS.

Does this prove Apple is a monopoly?

No. The precise claim is that the DOJ alleges Apple has monopoly power in particular U.S. smartphone markets and used exclusionary practices to maintain it. Warren accused Apple of using the social and technical effects of green messaging to reinforce that position. Whether the conduct violates antitrust law is a question for the federal litigation and any eventual rulings. A green bubble is evidence of a messaging design and protocol choice; it is not, by itself, proof of unlawful monopolization.

What consumers should take from the dispute

  • Check the protocol before judging a message’s quality or security: green can mean RCS, SMS or MMS.
  • RCS can reduce several cross-platform frustrations, but carrier, region, device and software support determine what actually works.
  • iMessage remains Apple-controlled, blue and end-to-end encrypted according to Apple.
  • Third-party services can provide cross-platform features, but they generally require all participants to use the same service.
  • Greater interoperability could lower switching costs and improve group chats, while also requiring more system access and potentially creating privacy, security and product-differentiation trade-offs.

Bottom line

Warren’s green-text criticism is a vivid example of the DOJ’s broader theory that Apple’s ecosystem can make switching to rival smartphones harder. The DOJ lawsuit concerns alleged exclusionary conduct across several products and remains contested. Since the original 2024 controversy, RCS has made many green-bubble conversations richer, so the color alone no longer tells you whether a message is basic SMS, MMS or a more capable—and variably encrypted—RCS message.
