Lyft announced on May 16, 2023, that Elaine Paul would step down as chief financial officer on May 19 and that Erin Brewer would become CFO on July 10. Lyft chief accounting officer Lisa Blackwood-Kapral served as interim CFO and principal financial officer between those dates. Paul remained with Lyft as an adviser and transition-services provider through November 30, 2023, subject to earlier termination under the agreement.

How Lyft’s CFO transition unfolded

Date Event
January 2022 Elaine Paul began serving as Lyft CFO, according to Lyft’s announcement.
May 15, 2023 Lyft and Paul mutually agreed that she would step down as CFO, according to the Form 8-K.
May 16, 2023 Lyft publicly announced Brewer’s appointment and the transition plan.
May 19, 2023 Paul’s CFO service ended; Blackwood-Kapral took on the interim CFO and principal financial officer roles.
July 10, 2023 Brewer was scheduled to begin as CFO.
November 30, 2023 Paul’s agreed advisory and transition-services period was scheduled to end, unless ended earlier under the agreement.
March 31, 2026 Lyft’s quarterly filing identified Brewer as CFO and principal financial officer and said she had held the role since July 2023.

Brewer was named as Paul’s successor in May, but she did not take over immediately. Blackwood-Kapral covered the intervening period; Paul’s later advisory work did not mean she remained CFO after May 19.

Who is Erin Brewer?

Brewer brought finance and strategy experience from several large companies. She was managing director of enterprise finance at Charles Schwab from May 2020 to October 2022 and head of strategy and finance at Atlassian from September 2018 to April 2020. Before that, she spent about 13 years at McKesson in senior finance, investor-relations, financial-planning-and-analysis, and accounting positions, including executive vice president and chief accounting officer.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Purdue University and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. Lyft CEO David Risher described her experience as bringing together growth, operational efficiency, and customer focus; that was the company’s stated characterization of her fit for the role.

What Lyft disclosed about Paul’s departure

Lyft’s filing says the company and Paul mutually agreed that she would step down as CFO. It does not give a detailed personal or operational explanation. The public disclosures cited here do not establish that she was fired, retired, or left because of misconduct, financial irregularities, or a strategic disagreement.

The Form 8-K disclosed a cash payment of $325,000, equivalent to six months of base salary, subject to the applicable release condition, plus a lump-sum payment covering the cost of six months of COBRA coverage. Paul agreed to provide transition services from May 19 through November 30, 2023, unless the arrangement ended earlier. Her outstanding equity awards continued to vest during the consulting period if she remained a service provider; the filing did not provide for accelerated vesting. These are the terms disclosed in the filing, not a summary of every provision that might appear in a complete employment agreement.

Interim finance leadership

Blackwood-Kapral, already Lyft’s chief accounting officer, served as interim CFO and principal financial officer while Brewer’s appointment was pending. A June 14, 2023, Form 8-K/A disclosed that Lyft’s board had approved a one-time $75,000 bonus related to her interim service. It was payable around July 31, subject to her remaining employed through that date.

Financial outlook and leadership context

Lyft said the CFO transition did not change its previously announced second-quarter 2023 outlook for revenue, contribution margin, adjusted EBITDA, or adjusted EBITDA margin. The company said it planned to report second-quarter results in August and long-term targets later in 2023. An unchanged outlook at the time of the announcement does not establish that the leadership change had no later business effects.

The transition followed a broader leadership change at Lyft: David Risher became CEO, while co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer left their operating roles. The timing places Paul’s departure within that period of change, but the disclosures do not say the CEO transition caused the CFO change.

Where the succession stood later

Lyft’s filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, confirms that Brewer remained CFO and principal financial officer and had served as CFO since July 2023. The succession announced in 2023 therefore became a permanent appointment, not a short-term placement.
