Yes—the Evolve Bank & Trust data breach was real. Evolve’s regulatory filing listed 7,640,112 affected people, the source of the widely rounded “7.6 million” figure. That population was not necessarily 7.6 million direct Evolve deposit customers: it included Evolve customers, open-banking and fintech-partner users, and people whose information appeared in affected files. Evolve said it found no evidence that threat actors accessed customer funds, but personal information was apparently accessed and downloaded.
What happened in the Evolve Bank breach?
Evolve described unauthorized access to systems and files during periods in February and May 2024. Maine’s breach filing lists 7,640,112 people affected, says Evolve identified the incident on May 29, 2024, and records consumer notifications beginning July 8, 2024. Evolve’s own cybersecurity-incident page and substitute notice, state filings, and the later court-approved settlement all document the incident.
The Federal Reserve separately announced a June 14, 2024 enforcement action concerning Evolve’s anti-money-laundering, risk-management and consumer-compliance programs. That action is related regulatory context, not proof that the settlement allegations were established.
“7.6 million customers” is therefore imprecise. “7.64 million individuals listed as affected” more accurately describes the filing.

- Evolve account numbers and bank-account numbers
- Driver’s-license numbers, according to the settlement description
- Debit-card numbers for a smaller portion of people
Evolve’s frequently asked questions and later settlement materials explain that the information differed by individual. It is accurate to say personal information appears to have been accessed or downloaded; it is not accurate to say every person’s Social Security number, driver’s-license number or debit-card number was stolen.
Were customer funds accessed?
Evolve said there was no evidence that threat actors accessed customer funds. The reported activity involved personal information in databases and a file share. That limited statement addresses this cybersecurity incident; it does not rule on separate account-access, payment, frozen-account or service disputes involving a fintech company.

Who could have been affected?
- Direct Evolve personal-banking customers
- Mortgage, trust and small-business banking customers
- Customers of Evolve’s open-banking partners
- End users of fintech companies that obtained banking services from Evolve
- Certain fintech relationships involving services provided through or connected to Synapse Financial Technologies
A relationship with Evolve or a fintech app is a reason to investigate, not proof that a particular person was included. Do not infer that every user of a named app was affected unless that company separately confirmed it.
How to check whether you were affected
- Search email, postal mail and spam folders for an Evolve notice sent from about July 8, 2024 onward.
- Review messages from fintech providers you used during the relevant period; your relationship may have been through a partner rather than Evolve directly.
- Use Evolve’s official incident page and FAQ, and contact the bank through its official website if you need clarification.
- Do not treat an unofficial breach-list website as proof of inclusion.
- If you filed a settlement claim, check payment information only through Evolve’s official settlement site or the administrator contact details published there.
Settlement status in 2026
The ordinary claim deadline was October 30, 2025; a new ordinary claim cannot be submitted after that deadline. The court entered final approval on December 15, 2025, and approved-claim payments were issued March 30, 2026. The settlement site says uncashed checks become void after September 28, 2026. People who filed but have a missing payment should use the official administrator information on the FAQ or documents page.

1. Freeze your credit
A freeze is generally stronger than monitoring because it restricts access to your credit file for most new-credit applications. Place freezes directly with all three nationwide bureaus:

A freeze does not stop activity on existing cards or bank accounts, so continue reviewing those accounts.
2. Pull and inspect your credit reports
Use the federally authorized AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, address changes, collection accounts and incorrect personal information.
3. Secure financial and online accounts
- Change passwords reused elsewhere and enable multifactor authentication.
- Review bank, debit-card, payment-app and payroll activity.
- Call financial institutions using a number on a statement or official card.
- Report suspected identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov.
4. Treat follow-up messages as potential phishing
Scammers may impersonate Evolve, TransUnion, Kroll, a fintech app or a government agency. Type official domains manually, avoid unexpected links, and never provide a full Social Security number or one-time authentication code to an unsolicited caller. Check whether any complimentary Evolve or settlement monitoring is still active before buying a duplicate service.
Quick Recap
What this breach does—and does not—establish
- The 7.64 million figure is an affected-person count from a regulatory filing, not a count of direct Evolve depositors.
- Data categories varied; exposure of one category does not mean exposure of all categories.
- Evolve’s statement about no evidence of fund access is narrower than saying no customer ever suffered any financial loss.
- The settlement does not establish legal liability, and a settlement payment alone is not proof of exposure outside the settlement’s eligibility definition.
- Separate problems involving fintech platforms or Synapse should not automatically be attributed to this incident.
