Apple did raise Turkish App Store prices, but the widely reported event dates to December 2021—not a newly verified August 2026 increase. MacRumors reported that Apple’s lowest Turkish app tier moved from TRY 10.99 to TRY 16.99 on December 8, after another adjustment in October. The changes came as the lira depreciated sharply and inflation accelerated.
What changed in December 2021?
The December 2021 report concerned Turkish App Store price tiers for paid apps and related in-app purchases. MacRumors reported the lowest tier rising from TRY 10.99 to TRY 16.99. That figure is attributed to the contemporary report rather than to a surviving Apple announcement listing every affected tier.

A higher tier price could affect a new purchase of a paid app, a one-time unlock, or a consumable or non-consumable in-app item. It did not revoke apps that customers had already bought; ownership of a previously purchased app is separate from the price shown to a new buyer.
The story was about the Turkish App Store storefront. It should not be confused with price changes for iPhone, iPad, Mac hardware or Apple services such as Apple Music and Apple TV+, which follow separate pricing decisions.

Why Apple recalibrates local prices
Apple says it periodically changes App Store prices and developer proceeds when foreign-exchange rates or tax regulations change. Its system uses supported storefront price points and financial-market data to keep prices broadly equalized across markets, rather than converting a US-dollar price at the day’s live exchange rate for every transaction. Apple describes the system as covering 175 storefronts and multiple currencies.
That mechanism matters in a country where the local currency can lose value quickly. A Turkish-lira price that was economically aligned when set may no longer have the same relationship to prices in other storefronts months later. Apple can therefore move products to a different supported lira tier.

The December 2021 change should primarily be understood as a response to currency instability and the need to reset price tiers. It should not be described as Apple mechanically passing through Turkey’s full inflation rate: supported price points, taxes, product type and developer settings all affect the result.

Not every App Store product moved together
“Apple raised App Store prices” is too broad without identifying the product and pricing method.

A subscription’s renewal amount is the amount shown in the subscription flow and account records; it should not be inferred from a change to a one-time app tier.

These were not one continuous increase applied identically to every Turkish product. Each notice used different rules, dates and exclusions.
Currency pressure versus taxes
The 2021 increase
The prominent 2021 report followed a rapid lira decline and sharply rising prices. Turkey’s official annual consumer-price inflation rate was 36.08% in December 2021, according to the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye’s table reproducing TURKSTAT data. That economic context helps explain why fixed lira price tiers became difficult to maintain, but it does not establish a one-for-one CPI formula behind Apple’s prices.

The 2023 increase
The July 2023 notice had a specific, documented tax factor: Türkiye’s VAT rate increased from 18% to 20%. Apple said the update applied to apps and in-app purchases other than auto-renewable subscriptions.
Later updates
Apple’s notices allow for both tax and foreign-exchange effects. The correct cause therefore depends on the particular announcement and product. A later storefront adjustment should not automatically be labeled either an inflation surcharge or a VAT-only increase.

Developers choose a base country or region in App Store Connect. Apple can use that base storefront to calculate equivalent prices in other storefronts and update those prices when exchange rates or tax rules change. If Türkiye is the base storefront, treatment can differ from an app whose base is the United States, the euro area or another market.

Developers can also manage storefront prices manually. That gives them more control over local affordability and conversion, but it requires monitoring currency movements, taxes and supported price points. Automated equalization reduces administrative work but may produce a Turkish price that no longer matches a developer’s preferred local strategy.

What the changes meant for developers
- Affordability: Higher lira prices can reduce purchases in a market where household budgets are under pressure.
- Revenue protection: Keeping a price unchanged in a rapidly weakening currency can reduce the value of proceeds when converted to another currency.
- Conversion trade-off: A developer may accept lower proceeds to preserve volume, or raise the price to protect margins.
- Proceeds are not the retail price: Apple’s commission and applicable taxes mean a higher customer price does not flow entirely to the developer.
- Product differences: A developer’s base storefront, manual pricing choices and whether an item is a subscription or one-time purchase can produce different outcomes between apps.
What Turkish users should check
- Open the app’s Turkish App Store listing and note the current price in lira.
- Identify whether the purchase is one-time, consumable, non-consumable or auto-renewing.
- For a subscription, review the renewal amount shown immediately before confirmation rather than assuming it follows a one-time tier change.
- Check Apple purchase history and receipts for the amount actually charged.
- If two similar apps show different movements, consider that their developers may use different base storefronts or manual pricing.
Is there a new 2026 Turkey-wide increase?
The official Apple notices reviewed through August 18, 2026 do not establish a new, separate Türkiye-wide App Store price hike in 2026. Türkiye’s annual CPI was 32.11% in June 2026, with monthly inflation of 0.99%, according to TURKSTAT’s June 2026 release. Those figures show continuing economic pressure, but they do not prove that Apple made a new App Store adjustment.
For a current-news claim, a dated Apple announcement or current App Store evidence is needed. The December 2021 headline should therefore carry its date or be clearly labeled as historical.
