Pinterest CEO Supports Phone-Free Schools—but What Does Its App Prompt Actually Do?

Bill Ready’s support for phone-free schools is paired with a Pinterest reminder asking teens to close the app in class—not a phone lockout or proof of better learning.

Pinterest CEO Bill Ready supports reducing phone distractions in classrooms, and Pinterest has tested an in-app reminder asking teens to close the app during school hours. The prompt is a nudge, not a school phone ban: Pinterest’s public descriptions do not establish that it blocks access or that it tells students how much to use the app later.

What Bill Ready said about phone-free schools

Ready, Pinterest’s CEO since 2022, voiced support for phone-free schools in an interview around the World Economic Forum in January 2025. His argument was that fewer classroom distractions would benefit students’ learning. That is an executive and company position, not a federal policy announcement or a rule that Pinterest can impose on schools. Fast Company’s January 2025 report covered the remarks; Pinterest’s leadership page continues to describe the company as supporting phone-free schools.

What “phone-free school” can mean

The phrase covers different policies, and Ready’s support for fewer classroom distractions does not amount to an endorsement of one universal model. A school might prohibit phones throughout the day, require them to stay in lockers or backpacks, use locking pouches, or allow them at lunch and passing periods but not during class. Other schools leave restrictions to individual teachers.

Any schoolwide policy also has to account for students who need a device for medical monitoring, accessibility, translation, or family communication. Schools, districts, states, and policymakers—not Pinterest—set and implement those rules.

What Pinterest’s school-hours prompt does

Pinterest describes an app-level prompt for teens who open the platform during designated school hours. It encourages them to leave Pinterest and silence phone notifications until class is over. The company says it adjusted the wording after feedback that the original message sounded too much like a parent or teacher. Its later description invites students to take a break and return after class.

Fast Company reported that the U.S. test was planned to appear roughly between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on school days. Those were reported test parameters, not a confirmed permanent schedule for every account or market. Pinterest later said it had tested the feature in the United States and Canada and rolled it out in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2025. Its UK newsroom announcement describes the test and rollout.

The documented intervention is a reminder inside Pinterest, not a device-level lockout. Pinterest’s public description does not establish that the app technically blocks a teen from continuing to use it, controls other apps, or applies to every teen account. Availability and timing may differ by market, account, experiment, and later product changes; Pinterest’s current leadership page still describes the prompt but does not establish universal availability in 2026.

What Pinterest’s reported results show—and do not show

Pinterest said more than 1.3 million students viewed and clicked the prompt in less than one month during testing in the United States and Canada. That company-reported figure measures exposure and clicks. It does not show that classroom phone use fell, grades improved, screen time declined, or any change lasted. The cited coverage does not provide an independent causal evaluation of the prompt.

Why a social platform would ask students to put phones away

Pinterest presents itself as an inspiration-oriented platform and Ready has argued for “time spent well” rather than maximizing time spent. The company also frames teen safety and emotional wellbeing as priorities. Ready’s broader public argument about platform responsibility appears in Pinterest’s youth-safety op-ed.

There is also a clear reputational interest: a social-media company that endorses classroom limits may appear more credible to parents, educators, regulators, and policymakers. The evidence establishes Pinterest’s position and product feature, not Ready’s private motives. Safety positioning and corporate reputation can both matter without making the intervention either purely altruistic or purely promotional.

How it fits Pinterest’s teen-safety policies

Pinterest says accounts for users aged 13 to 15 are private, with no option to make them public. In an April 2025 update, it said accounts for 16- and 17-year-olds were set to private by default globally, though those users could change the setting. The company also describes restrictions on younger teens’ discoverability and messaging. Its published policies say it does not permit body-shaming content or weight-loss advertising and does not use face-altering beauty filters in the cited safety materials. These are company-stated rules, not independent proof of consistent enforcement or a guarantee that minors face no risks. Details are on Pinterest’s teen-safety page.

Why schools are debating phone restrictions

Fast Company cited teacher survey findings that 72% of high-school teachers and 33% of middle-school teachers viewed cellphone distraction as a major problem. These figures describe teachers’ perceptions, not direct measurements of learning loss or academic outcomes. The same report cited a KFF count of nine U.S. states with statewide school cellphone restrictions as of March 2025. That is a dated count, not a current 2026 total; state laws and implementation can change. Fast Company’s report provides that context.

Limits and objections to the intervention

  • It is easy to dismiss. A student can ignore a reminder or switch to another app; the prompt does not enforce a school policy.
  • The timing may not fit. An app’s designated school hours may not match a particular school’s schedule, trip, testing day, or after-school activity.
  • It addresses Pinterest, not the device. Students may still use other distracting apps, and a corporate reminder should not be mistaken for a school-management tool.
  • Notification advice has trade-offs. Silencing a phone globally could affect important alerts, depending on the device settings and the student’s needs.
  • It leaves the incentive intact. Asking teens to return after class still places Pinterest within their daily media routine.
  • It raises implementation questions. Any age- or school-hours-based feature prompts questions about how a platform determines age, time zone, location, and school schedule. The cited company descriptions do not resolve those details.
  • Its outcome evidence is limited. Prompt clicks do not establish changes in classroom behavior, education, wellbeing, or total screen time.

What parents and schools should look for

A platform prompt can complement a school policy, but it cannot substitute for one. When evaluating a phone rule, parents and educators can check whether it explains:

  • When phones must be put away and how the rule applies across classes, lunch, trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • How students can access medical, disability, translation, or other needed technology.
  • How families can reach students in an emergency without undermining the policy.
  • How staff will enforce the rule consistently, including for students who do not own smartphones.
  • How the school will assess effects on learning and student wellbeing, rather than treating compliance alone as proof of success.
