The December 2022 headline was a real PayPal–MetaMask integration announcement, but it is no longer merely a plan. As of August 18, 2026, PayPal’s U.S. documentation lists MetaMask among supported external wallets for eligible U.S. customers. Where enabled, users can buy or sell supported crypto with PayPal and transfer it to or from the external wallet. Availability, assets, networks, fees and limits depend on the account and rollout.
What PayPal announced in December 2022
PayPal and ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask, announced that PayPal would become a crypto-purchase option inside MetaMask. The initial use case was buying cryptocurrency with PayPal and moving it to a MetaMask wallet, beginning with selected U.S. customers and an Ethereum-focused rollout. The contemporaneous report is preserved by Tech Times.
That announcement should be read as the starting point, not as a description of the current product.
What is available now

The feature is available only to eligible U.S. customers and is being rolled out by PayPal. A PayPal account or a MetaMask installation does not guarantee access; the PayPal option must appear in the wallet or account flow. What users can do
- Choose PayPal as the funding source in a supported wallet.
- Buy supported cryptocurrency and transfer it to the external wallet in one flow.
- Transfer supported cryptocurrency from an external wallet and sell it through PayPal, where the account and asset qualify.
- Use PYUSD with MetaMask.
This is a centralized PayPal on-ramp and off-ramp connected to a non-PayPal wallet; it does not make MetaMask a PayPal account.
Supported assets and networks
For the external-wallet feature, PayPal currently identifies the following assets:

PayPal’s broader consumer crypto offering also mentions Solana and Chainlink, but that broader list is not automatically a list of assets transferable to MetaMask. PYUSD network warning
PYUSD is PayPal’s dollar-backed stablecoin, issued by Paxos. PayPal describes its backing as U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. Treasuries and similar cash equivalents (PayPal’s PYUSD explanation). PayPal’s current terms identify PYUSD on Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum and Stellar (cryptocurrency terms).
Those networks are not interchangeable. The sending network, receiving address and wallet configuration must match. Sending on the wrong network can make funds inaccessible.
How the PayPal–MetaMask flow works
PayPal documents a general process for supported external wallets. Button names can differ by wallet version, app and rollout.
- Open the supported wallet or crypto-offering app.
- Choose Buy or Sell.
- Select PayPal as the payment method, if it is displayed.
- Enter the U.S.-dollar amount of cryptocurrency.
- Sign in to PayPal when redirected.
- Review the quoted exchange rate, spread, PayPal fees, external-wallet fee, network fee and destination.
- Confirm only after checking the asset, network and wallet address.
A purchase sends the crypto to the external wallet. A sale or transfer in the opposite direction depends on the supported asset, wallet and account eligibility.

Fees: the quoted total matters
PayPal says crypto prices include a spread, so the displayed quote—not a public spot price alone—is the relevant execution figure. Its disclosures are at PayPal’s crypto fees and exchange-rates page.
External-wallet charges
- For crypto other than PYUSD, the applicable transaction fee on the combined purchase amount plus 1% of the dollar value transferred to the external wallet.
- For PYUSD, 1.5% of the dollar value transferred to the external wallet, with no separate transaction fee on the combined purchase amount.
- A blockchain network fee, shown before the transfer.
PayPal’s standard purchase, sale or conversion schedule

These rates come from PayPal’s U.S. consumer fee schedule at PayPal consumer fees. The effective cost can therefore include the quoted spread, the schedule rate, the 1% or 1.5% external-wallet charge and the network fee.
Limits shown in PayPal’s August 18, 2026 terms
The following limits were listed for a PayPal-linked account when the terms were checked. PayPal reserves the right to change them.

Who controls the crypto?
MetaMask is a self-custody wallet: control of the wallet credentials and private keys rests with the user. PayPal is the payment and crypto-service provider used to fund or receive the transaction. The crypto may start in PayPal’s service and then be transferred on-chain to the MetaMask address.
Anyone who loses a MetaMask recovery phrase can permanently lose access. PayPal generally cannot reverse a confirmed blockchain transfer or recover crypto sent to an incompatible address. Never share a recovery phrase or private key.

The option does not appear
- Your country, account, identity status, wallet, asset or network may be ineligible.
- The feature may not yet be enabled for your account.
- PayPal may impose account, security or legal restrictions.
The purchase or transfer is delayed
Identity verification, funding-source availability, account reviews, blockchain congestion, service-provider interruptions, downtime or legal and security controls can delay or suspend a transaction.
The address or network is wrong
Stop before confirmation if the asset, network or destination does not match. A confirmed on-chain transfer is generally irreversible. PayPal’s terms describe reversal and return of funds when it cannot submit a purchase to the network for certain technical reasons; that protection does not make an incorrectly addressed blockchain transfer recoverable.

Safety checklist
- Use only official PayPal and MetaMask apps or websites.
- Check the full quote, including spread, transaction charge, external-wallet charge and network fee.
- Send a small test amount first when practical.
- Verify the complete address rather than relying only on its first and last characters.
- Keep the recovery phrase offline and private.
Do not confuse this with PayPal’s merchant crypto checkout
PayPal separately offers a “Pay with crypto” product for U.S. merchants. Global buyers can pay those merchants from third-party wallets, including MetaMask, while PayPal settles the merchant in local currency. The developer documentation lists a $0.01 minimum transaction, refunds in PYUSD, a verified U.S. PayPal Business account and an Orders V2 API integration. Billing agreements, recurring payments, chargebacks, multi-seller configurations, authorization-and-capture flows and vaulted payments are not supported. That checkout product is separate from using PayPal to buy or sell crypto through MetaMask. It does not mean every MetaMask transaction is processed by PayPal.
When PayPal is—and is not—a sensible on-ramp
Potential advantages
- Familiar funding and identity flow for existing PayPal users.
- Fewer steps than purchasing on an exchange and arranging a separate transfer.
- Direct delivery to a self-custody wallet when the feature is enabled.
- Access to PYUSD on MetaMask.
Important trade-offs
- Total costs can exceed those of a low-cost exchange or bank transfer because of spread, transaction fees, external-wallet charges and network fees.
- Eligibility is geographically and account restricted.
- The supported asset and network range is narrower than MetaMask’s overall ecosystem.
- Users—not PayPal—bear the key-management and irreversible-transfer risks of self-custody.
- PayPal may delay, limit, suspend or refuse transactions for operational, legal or security reasons.
PayPal is usually a convenience-oriented option for an eligible beginner who already uses the service. A high-frequency trader, a cost-sensitive buyer, or someone seeking broad token and network coverage may prefer a specialized exchange or another on-ramp. Anyone unable to secure a recovery phrase should not move funds into self-custody.
