On Amazon’s August 3, 2023, second-quarter earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy said every Amazon business had multiple generative AI initiatives underway. He described two aims—improving operating efficiency and changing customer experiences—and named Stores, AWS, advertising, devices and entertainment. It was a broad statement of strategic scope, not a list of launched products or proof that every project was mature or successful.
What Jassy said—and what he did not announce
Jassy’s remarks, reported from the Q2 2023 earnings call, framed generative AI as a company-wide effort rather than an AWS-only initiative. He said Amazon was working on applications that could make operations more cost-effective and streamlined, as well as applications that could improve the products and services customers use. He singled out Stores, AWS, advertising, devices and entertainment, and hinted that Alexa was a significant area of work. India Today’s account of the call reported the comments.
He did not identify a project for every division, give a launch schedule or budget, report performance results, or say every initiative would become a public product. “Initiative” could describe work at different stages, from internal experimentation to customer-facing development. The remarks establish Amazon’s stated breadth of activity, not independently verified deployment throughout every business.
Why the statement mattered to Amazon’s strategy
In 2023, Amazon was both a major retailer and a cloud provider competing to serve companies building generative-AI applications. Jassy’s framing connected those roles: Amazon could use AI inside its own operations and customer experiences, while AWS could sell the computing, model access and developer services other organizations need.

That creates three distinct potential economic benefits, which should not be conflated: lower costs or better productivity within Amazon; new or improved consumer and business experiences that may support Amazon’s existing businesses; and AWS revenue from AI infrastructure and services. The earnings-call statement did not quantify savings, prove that AI drove revenue growth, or establish returns on any particular project.
Amazon’s Q2 2023 results announcement highlighted AWS offerings including Trainium, Inferentia, Bedrock and CodeWhisperer. Separately, in June 2023 AWS announced a Generative AI Innovation Center to help customers adopt the technology. These were concrete parts of the commercial strategy, but they were not evidence that every consumer-facing initiative was equally far along.
What Amazon was building in AWS
AWS’s approach combined computing infrastructure, access to models and tools for building applications. These layers serve different needs; they are not interchangeable products, and their availability at the time varied.

- Infrastructure: Trainium and Inferentia are AWS-designed chips intended for machine-learning training and inference workloads. They are infrastructure, not consumer AI applications.
- Model and application development: Bedrock is a managed service for building with foundation models; it is not a single Amazon language model. SageMaker supports broader machine-learning workflows, including model development and deployment.
- Developer-facing applications: CodeWhisperer was Amazon’s AI coding companion. Amazon later announced organization-specific customizations based on internal code repositories, subject to service configuration and requirements.
In his 2023 shareholder letter, published in 2024, Jassy described Bedrock capabilities including model choice, Guardrails, Knowledge Bases, Agents and fine-tuning, and said it had attracted tens of thousands of active customers within months of launch. That is Amazon’s reported customer figure, not an independent measure of usage or commercial success. AWS subsequently announced Bedrock general availability and additional generative-AI offerings in September 2023.
Amazon’s model-choice pitch was that different applications may need different models or model sizes, and that organizations often want to use models with their own data. A choice of models can be useful, but it also means customers must evaluate output quality, latency, cost, governance and the work involved in changing models. Bedrock’s managed access does not remove those decisions or make model outputs reliable by default.
How the initiatives touched Amazon’s other businesses
Stores: shopping and product information
Amazon began rolling out AI-generated product-review summaries in August 2023. The initial feature was described as available to a subset of U.S. mobile shoppers across a broad selection of products, with expansion dependent on customer feedback—not as a feature available to every shopper at launch. Euronews reported the rollout’s limits. Amazon later introduced Rufus, a shopping assistant, and described AI-assisted product-detail content in subsequent disclosures. Those later developments should not be read back into what Jassy specified on the call.

Devices: Alexa
Jassy pointed to devices and invited listeners to consider what Amazon was working on with Alexa. The 2023 remarks did not establish a launch date, model, hardware requirement, price, or the design of a generative-AI Alexa. Nor did they resolve practical questions about inaccurate answers, privacy or errors in controlling devices. Later Amazon statements about more capable assistants are subsequent developments, not details disclosed in August 2023.
Advertising: creative tools
Amazon identified advertising as another area of activity. Its later shareholder materials described tools for advertisers to generate, customize and edit images, copy and video. These may help advertisers produce campaign assets, but Amazon’s advertising revenue growth was reported separately; the available disclosures do not show that generative AI caused that growth.

Jassy said Amazon’s entertainment businesses had initiatives, but did not describe particular Prime Video or Amazon MGM projects. The statement therefore supports the conclusion that entertainment was within the stated scope, not that Amazon had announced AI-generated scripts, replacement performers or finished AI-generated shows. Entertainment-focused coverage of the remarks likewise offered little project detail.

Internal operations
Generative AI can matter to Amazon even when customers never interact with a chatbot. In a later company update, Jassy cited uses involving fulfillment, customer service and product-detail-page generation; Amazon has also described work involving inventory placement, demand forecasting and robot efficiency. These are company descriptions of applications and potential benefits, not audited evidence that each use reduced costs by a specified amount. Amazon’s later generative-AI update provides examples.

Amazon’s later disclosures add evidence that the 2023 statement was followed by a wider program, while preserving the distinction between what was known then and what the company said later.
- September 2023: AWS announced Bedrock general availability and additional generative-AI capabilities. Amazon also announced a strategic collaboration with Anthropic involving AWS infrastructure and Bedrock access.
- 2023 shareholder letter, published in 2024: Jassy described applications spanning shopping, coding, personal assistants, advertising, customer and seller service, and other consumer businesses.
- 2024 shareholder letter: Jassy said Amazon was building more than 1,000 generative-AI applications across the company. That later figure was not part of the August 2023 earnings-call disclosure.
The letters are useful evidence of Amazon’s own account of its direction and activity, not independent verification that every application launched, achieved adoption or generated a financial return. See the 2024 shareholder letter for the later application count and examples.

What “across all divisions” does not prove
- It does not mean every division had launched a public generative-AI product or reached production readiness.
- It does not establish that all teams used the same model, AWS service or approach.
- It does not show that every experiment continued, attracted customers or created a material revenue opportunity.
- It does not demonstrate that Amazon had solved accuracy, privacy, data governance, copyright, labor or reliability concerns.
- It does not prove that AI initiatives improved Amazon’s profitability or caused growth in a reported business line.
These qualifications matter because a broad portfolio creates both opportunity and execution risk. Internal automation may require human review when mistakes affect orders or customer service; customer-facing summaries can mislead if they omit important context; and model use carries infrastructure, inference and oversight costs. The earnings-call comments gave no project-level measurements with which to compare those costs and benefits.
How to read the announcement
For investors and AWS customers, the useful distinction is between strategic ambition and evidence of execution. The 2023 call signaled that Amazon wanted to apply generative AI across its operations and customer businesses while selling AI capabilities through AWS. AWS products and later named applications made parts of that strategy concrete. But the call itself was not a product catalog, a performance report or proof that every division had a successful AI business.
