China’s iPhone Discounts Helped Cushion Apple’s March-Quarter Decline—but Didn’t Prove a Recovery

Apple’s February 2024 China iPhone promotions may have limited near-term weakness. The reported figures, however, do not prove how much they helped or establish a durable recovery.

Apple’s China iPhone promotions may have softened a sales decline in the fiscal quarter ended March 30, 2024. But the available figures do not establish how much they helped, and they do not show that discounts protected Apple’s overall quarterly result. The numbers cited in a May 2024 report mix sales and shipment categories that cannot be cleanly reconciled.

What Apple reported for its March quarter

Apple’s fiscal second quarter of 2024 ended March 30. The company reported $90.8 billion in revenue, down 4% year over year. Apple also described Services revenue as an all-time quarterly record and earnings per share as a March-quarter record. It authorized an additional $110 billion share-repurchase program and raised its dividend by 4%. These are company-wide results, not evidence that China discounts preserved the quarter: Apple’s release does not attribute its performance to the promotions. Apple’s results announcement

The distinction matters to investors. Apple’s quarterly revenue reflects multiple products, services, geographies, currency effects, and product mix. A promotion affecting iPhones in one market may help one part of the business without reversing a decline in total revenue.

What is known about the China promotions

A May 8, 2024 Tech Times article reported that iPhone prices in China were cut toward the end of February. It does not provide a complete model-by-model price list, identify all participating retailers, or establish which reductions Apple funded versus which sellers offered through their own promotions. Nor does it establish that the discounts were permanent changes to Apple’s official list prices. The Tech Times report

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

That leaves an important distinction unresolved: a lower price shown by a retailer does not necessarily mean Apple changed its official price or absorbed the full discount. Without details on the sellers, models, terms, and funding, the promotion’s reach and direct cost to Apple cannot be quantified from the reported information.

What the China sales figures do—and do not—show

Mainland China is not the same as Greater China

The Tech Times article reports that Tim Cook said mainland-China iPhone sales declined 8%, compared with an analyst expectation of about 25%, and also reports Cook saying Apple grew iPhone sales in mainland China during the quarter. The article does not define the measure or comparison behind these statements well enough to resolve the apparent tension. They should not be treated as a clearly specified year-over-year unit-sales result or as Apple’s reported revenue for its broader Greater China segment.

These measures answer different questions. Mainland China is a geographic market; Greater China is Apple’s broader reporting segment. Consumer sell-through, distributor shipments, unit volume, and revenue are also different measures. A revenue decline need not match a unit decline because prices and the mix of models sold affect revenue.

The foreign-brand and shipment figures are not directly comparable

The same Tech Times report attributes to China’s Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) foreign-branded smartphone sales of about 3.75 million units, up roughly 12% year over year. It also cites a 27% fall in iPhone shipments—or, in its wording, shipments by foreign companies including Apple. The report does not define the statistical categories or methods sufficiently to determine whether the 27% figure is Apple-specific, covers a wider group, or matches the period and measurement basis of the 3.75 million figure.

  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

For that reason, the figures cannot establish that Apple’s own consumer sales rose. A rise in a broad foreign-brand category does not mean every brand gained, and shipments into distribution channels are not the same as purchases by consumers. The conflicting-looking figures are a limitation of the reporting, not proof that either one describes Apple’s precise China performance.

Why discounts mattered in China

The report describes a market where Apple faced pressure from Huawei’s renewed presence in premium smartphones and aggressive domestic competitors. In that setting, promotions can make an iPhone more competitive at the point of purchase, especially for price-sensitive buyers. The report estimates that China represented roughly 17% to 20% of Apple’s global iPhone sales, but this is an external estimate, not a figure Apple reported in its results release.

Discounting also carries trade-offs. Lower prices may encourage a purchase or help retailers move stock, but they can reduce revenue per device and may pressure margins depending on who funds the offer. A promotion can shift a future purchase into the current quarter rather than create lasting demand. And if buyers come to expect recurring discounts, the tactic may weaken the appeal of buying at launch prices. The available figures do not quantify any of these effects for this campaign.

How to judge whether the promotion worked

Calling a promotion successful requires more than a headline about sales or shipments. Four measures would help distinguish a temporary volume boost from an improvement in Apple’s position:

  • Up to 29 hours video playback. USB-C, Supports USB 3 for up to 20x faster transfers. Face ID
  • Units: Did consumer purchases or shipments improve, and which measure is being used?
  • Revenue: Did iPhone revenue in the relevant market stabilize, rather than just unit volume?
  • Profitability: How much of the price reduction came from Apple, and what happened to revenue and margin per device?
  • Market position: Did Apple retain or regain share after the promotional period ended?

The reporting available here does not supply a counterfactual—an estimate of what Apple would have sold without discounts—or enough detail to answer all four questions. It supports the possibility that promotions helped limit the near-term downside, not a precise estimate of their effect.

Cook’s optimism is not proof of a rebound

Cook’s reported comments that he felt good about Apple’s China performance and that iPhone sales had grown in mainland China are relevant management commentary. But the report does not specify the comparison period or whether “sales” means units, revenue, or sell-through. An improvement against one comparison can coexist with a year-over-year decline against another, and a statement about mainland China does not by itself establish a gain in Greater China or a recovery in market share. The comments therefore should not be read as proof that Apple had regained ground from Huawei or other domestic brands.

What the headline gets right—and overstates

The headline’s “preserves” wording goes beyond what the evidence can show. China promotions plausibly cushioned iPhone weakness, but Apple’s official results do not credit them with protecting the company’s March quarter, and the China-specific data summarized in the report are not sufficiently aligned to establish the promotions’ impact. The sounder conclusion is narrower: discounts were one possible source of short-term support amid competitive pressure, while the durability and economics of that support remain unproven.
