Tekla Structures was generally quote-based in 2025. Trimble sold three principal configurations—Carbon, Graphite, and Diamond—so the right cost depends on whether you only view and coordinate models, author design documentation, or need full detailing and production workflows. A UAE regional page showed indicative annual prices of $1,100 plus VAT for Carbon and $3,600 plus VAT for Graphite, but those are not universal or U.S. prices. Trimble also offered a 30-day commercial trial and a separate 365-day educational subscription.
Tekla is usually easiest to justify for steel, concrete, precast, fabrication, and complex constructible-BIM work. It is harder to justify for basic drafting, occasional model viewing, or structural analysis alone.
What Tekla Structures does
Tekla Structures is structural BIM software for creating, combining, managing, and sharing information-rich 3D models. Its strongest use cases include steel detailing, concrete and precast modeling, constructible structural models, fabrication documentation, coordination, numbering, reports, and production workflows.
It is not a universal replacement for every structural-analysis or engineering package. A company may use Tekla alongside analysis and design software, estimating or fabrication-management systems, general BIM platforms, and coordination viewers.

Subscription terms
Trimble offered recurring annual subscriptions that renew unless canceled under the contract, as well as fixed-term subscriptions. The licensing FAQ states that a fixed-term subscription can have a maximum validity period of three years. Confirm renewal dates, cancellation notice, payment schedule, and any local conditions in the actual quote.
Carbon vs. Graphite vs. Diamond
Trimble’s subscription comparison describes three material-independent configurations. Feature availability can change by release, environment, and regional agreement, so use the live matrix when finalizing a purchase.
| Configuration | Best suited to | Core work | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | Viewers, coordinators, project participants, and data users | Open and view models, extract information, collaborate, and support logistics or planning activities | Not the full authoring, detailing, and production package |
| Graphite | Modelers and design-documentation teams | Author constructible models, use components, number objects, and produce drawings and reports | Does not represent Diamond’s complete production/detailing scope |
| Diamond | Detailers, fabricators, production teams, and multidisciplinary structural firms | Full Tekla Structures functionality, including detailing and production workflows | Highest-cost configuration and quote-only pricing |
Match the plan to the task
- Choose Carbon when your team mainly needs model information, collaboration, coordination, or planning rather than authoring.
- Request Graphite when you need constructible structural modeling and design documentation but not the complete fabrication workflow.
- Request Diamond when you detail, fabricate, generate production deliverables, or depend heavily on automation and advanced detailing.
What comes with a subscription?
Trimble’s subscription page lists Tekla Structures subscriptions with Trimble Connect Business Premium and Tekla Model Sharing. It also describes Tekla Online administration and license management, customer-care and support services subject to the applicable offering, Trimble User Assistance, learning and community resources, and Tekla Warehouse access subject to license restrictions.
Do not interpret that list as unlimited consulting or training. Confirm whether your quote includes implementation, custom components, standards and templates, migration, local support response commitments, or paid training.

Free commercial trial
Trimble provides a 30-day Tekla Structures trial. You create or use a Trimble Identity, install Tekla Launcher and Tekla Structures, activate the trial, and test a sample or representative model. The 30 days begin when you activate the license, so do not start it before your evaluation team and project are ready.
The trial is not unrestricted paid use. Trimble lists restrictions that can include disabled production imports and exports, drawing printing or exporting beyond preview, Model Sharing, limited Trimble Connect integration, Tekla Warehouse access, and the in-product Support Tool. A failed production-export test may therefore reflect a trial restriction rather than a product limitation.
Student subscription
The Tekla Student Subscription is a separate educational entitlement for students and higher-education educators. It lasts 365 days from activation and permits two concurrent online sessions for one user, with limited offline use.
- It is for educational use only, not paid freelance, employer, or client work.
- Educational models and documents carry restrictions such as watermarks.
- Exchange with ordinary commercial Tekla licenses is not unrestricted.
Keep educational and commercial files separate and check compatibility before sharing a student model.

What users praise and criticize
G2’s captured listing showed Tekla Structures at 4.5 out of 5 from 64 reviews; the score and count can change. Review-platform data is not an independently audited satisfaction study.
Commonly praised
- Accurate 3D structural modeling.
- Clear visualization of complex structures.
- Detailed drawings and reports.
- Handling of complex projects and construction-oriented detailing.
Commonly criticized
- High perceived cost, particularly for startups.
- A substantial learning and implementation burden for teams without experienced detailers.

Experienced users may become efficient with Tekla’s depth, but the review score should not be read as a promise that beginners will be productive immediately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Total cost of ownership
Compare the complete operating cost, not just the annual line item. Ask whether the project workload justifies:
- Carbon, Graphite, or Diamond seats and the number of named users.
- Training, onboarding, standards, templates, custom components, and automation.
- Workstations and network capacity for large models.
- Support, reseller services, migration, and administration.
- Collaboration requirements, including Trimble Connect and Tekla Model Sharing.
- Renewal exposure and the cost of maintaining access over several years.
A lower-tier seat can be economical for coordination, while a Diamond seat may pay for itself when it replaces manual detailing or supports revenue-generating fabrication work. Conversely, paying for Diamond for occasional viewing is difficult to justify.

How licensing works
Most new licenses issued from March 2021 use online licensing, according to Trimble’s online versus on-premises guidance. Users sign in with Trimble Identity, and an organization’s Tekla Online administrators assign licenses. A company should not assume that one named-user seat can be freely shared across a rotating workforce.
Older perpetual or on-premises arrangements may still exist, but switching models can involve technical and commercial conditions. The Tekla Structures 2025 licensing workflow explains installation, identity, and administration steps.
Questions to put in a quote request
- Which configuration—Carbon, Graphite, or Diamond—covers each required task?
- What is the price in our country and currency, and are VAT, sales tax, or other fees included?
- Is the term recurring annual or fixed-term, and what are renewal and cancellation deadlines?
- How many named users are included, and how are reassignment and administrator changes handled?
- Are Trimble Connect Business Premium and Tekla Model Sharing included for every quoted seat?
- What support level, response times, training, onboarding, and migration services are included?
- What offline-use rules apply, and what happens if a user cannot reach Trimble Identity or the organization account?
- Which Tekla version and model-compatibility policy apply to the contract?
- Are API access, automation, custom components, or additional Trimble products priced separately?
Tekla Structures compared with alternatives
| Product | Where it may fit better | Why it is not a direct substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Revit | General building BIM, multidisciplinary coordination, and Autodesk-standardized firms | Tekla is typically deeper for fabrication-grade structural detailing and production automation |
| AutoCAD | 2D drafting and simpler documentation | It does not provide Tekla’s information-rich constructible modeling and integrated detailing workflows |
| STAAD.Pro | Structural analysis and design calculations | Analysis is not the same role as Tekla’s modeling, detailing, drawing, and fabrication work |
| Autodesk AEC Collection | Broad AEC software coverage and the Autodesk ecosystem | Different product scope, seat structure, add-ons, and implementation needs make headline prices non-comparable |
G2’s comparison page showed an AEC Collection entry-level price of $355 per month, but that is a third-party comparison signal rather than a current official quote and is not a like-for-like Tekla price comparison: G2 comparison.
Who should buy Tekla Structures?
Strong fit
- Steel-detailing and fabrication firms.
- Precast and concrete contractors.
- Structural contractors producing constructible models and production documentation.
- Organizations handling complex multidisciplinary structures.
- Teams that can use model sharing, automation, and Trimble workflows.
Potentially poor fit
- Users who only view IFC or coordination models.
- Small teams doing simple 2D documentation.
- Companies needing structural analysis but not constructible BIM.
- Occasional users unable to support an annual commitment.
- Organizations unwilling to fund training, standards, and implementation.
Bottom-line buying advice
Tekla Structures is worth serious evaluation when detailed structural models, fabrication outputs, and complex project coordination directly support your revenue or reduce manual production work. Start by requesting a country-specific quote for the correct configuration, then activate the 30-day trial with a representative workflow. Carbon is the rational starting point for information and collaboration; Graphite suits authoring and documentation; Diamond is the configuration to price for full detailing and production. If your need is only analysis, basic drafting, or occasional viewing, a less specialized tool may deliver better value.
