iThenticate Pricing, Features & Reviews: Is It Worth It in 2026?

Verdict: iThenticate remains a strong similarity-screening service for manuscripts, theses, dissertations, grant proposals and publisher workflows, but it is expensive for casual checking. As of August 2026, individual packages cost $125 for one submission up to 25,000 words or $300 for up to three submissions (or one up to 75,000 words). Neither package includes AI-writing detection. The “Get Free Demo” wording refers to an organization sales consultation, not a verified free individual trial or free scan.

The August 2020 pricing and feature assumptions attached to the original title are therefore outdated. The current product is iThenticate 2.0, with updated reports, collaboration tools and optional organization-level AI features.

What iThenticate does

iThenticate is Turnitin’s similarity-screening product for research and professional content. It generates a Similarity Report that highlights matching passages, links to possible sources and shows an overall similarity percentage. The report is evidence for human review—not a finding of plagiarism.

Quoted material, correctly cited language, standard methods wording, bibliographies, preprints and an author’s earlier work can all create legitimate matches. Conversely, a low score does not prove originality if a source is not indexed, is inaccessible, newly published, translated or represented mainly by tables, formulas, images or code.

Similarity checking, AI-writing detection and a plagiarism judgment are separate matters. iThenticate finds textual overlap; an institution, editor or research-integrity professional decides whether that overlap is acceptable.

Who should use it?

Good fits

  • Researchers and authors preparing journal manuscripts.
  • Graduate and PhD students checking theses or dissertations.
  • Publishers and journal editorial offices screening submissions.
  • Universities, research offices and research-integrity teams.
  • Grantmakers, government agencies and corporate research groups.
  • Admissions offices reviewing application essays.

Weak fits

  • Casual users seeking a cheap, repeated plagiarism check.
  • Students who need classroom assignment submission and instructor feedback.
  • Writers primarily seeking grammar correction, rewriting or citation generation.
  • Buyers whose main objective is individual AI-content detection.

For classroom workflows, an institution-provided Turnitin account may be more appropriate. Turnitin says it does not sell individual Turnitin licenses; iThenticate is the individual-credit alternative.

Current iThenticate pricing (August 2026)

These are the official individual prices displayed when checked on August 16–18, 2026. They are before tax and may change by region or over time.

Package Price Included usage Revisions AI-writing detection
Single $125 before tax One submission up to 25,000 words 5 Not included
Multiple $300 before tax Up to three submissions, or one submission up to 75,000 words 5 Not included
Organization Custom quote Configured for institutional or publisher use Contract-dependent Available as a paid add-on where licensed

See the official iThenticate pricing page for the current checkout terms. Organization pricing is not publicly itemized and can depend on seats, annual submission volume, repositories, integrations, AI features, support and data-residency requirements.

Credits, word limits and revisions

A single credit covers one file of up to 25,000 words. The three-credit package can cover three submissions of up to 25,000 words each, or one submission up to 75,000 words. Each individual submission includes five revisions.

A revision is intended for an edited version of the same document. iThenticate’s guidance describes a 60% similarity requirement; its upload help describes the practical limit as a document no more than 40% different from the previous version. These are two formulations of the same restriction. A substantially rewritten manuscript can be treated as a new submission and require another credit.

The product page markets individual credits as valid for 12 months. Support documentation also describes a 12-month account-expiry period and says unused credits may remain available if the account is reactivated. Check the purchase and account terms before buying rather than assuming unused credits disappear permanently.

Full details are in the credits guide, revisions guide and revision upload instructions.

What the Similarity Report includes

Source-level matching

Reports show highlighted matching passages, source links, an overall score and detail for individual sources. Filtering and exclusion controls can remove citations, bibliographies, preprints, custom sections or other legitimate matches from the review view.

Exclusions improve efficiency but can hide meaningful overlap if applied indiscriminately. Review the original passage and source before treating any match as a problem.

Scholarly and web coverage

Turnitin describes access to current and archived web pages, journal and premium subscription content, open-access articles, books, conference proceedings, preprints, encyclopedias and abstracts, including publisher and Crossref-related material. It also markets a repository spanning more than 170 languages. Coverage and database totals change, so vendor figures should be treated as dated claims rather than independent audits.

Integrity and collaboration tools

iThenticate 2.0 adds enhanced report views, grouping and flags for hidden text, replaced characters and other potentially manipulated content. Organization accounts can share folders with users or groups and collaboratively review manuscripts, grant proposals and admissions materials.

Enterprise administration and integrations

Organization-level capabilities may include private repositories, regional data centers in the US, EU and APAC, usage statistics, seat or submission management, manuscript-tracking-system access and Turnitin Core REST API integration. These are not benefits to assume from an individual credit purchase. License administration details are outlined in the organization license guide.

AI-writing detection: an important limitation

AI-writing detection is a paid add-on for eligible iThenticate 2.0 organizations. It is not included with the $125 or $300 individual packages. Access depends on the organization’s license and administrator settings.

The AI report is separate from the similarity score and estimates whether qualifying prose may have been produced by AI tools or altered by paraphrasing or bypassing tools. Turnitin warns that the system can misidentify human-written, AI-generated and AI-paraphrased text, so it must not be the sole basis for disciplinary or other adverse action.

File type, language, word count and prose-format requirements apply. Current support documentation lists English, Spanish and Japanese for the enhanced report; code, tables, lists and other non-prose content may not qualify. See the AI-writing detection guide and access requirements.

What changed from the August 2020 version?

The old 2020 page should not be used for current prices or interface expectations. iThenticate 2.0 introduced a modernized interface, enhanced similarity checking, automatic exclusion options for preprints and selected sections, hidden-text and replaced-character flags, folder sharing and improved collaboration. On August 4, 2026, Turnitin simplified the AI report into a unified set of blue highlights for likely AI-generated or AI-modified content. Product changes are listed in the official updates guide.

How to buy an individual check

  1. Create or sign in to an iThenticate account.
  2. Choose Purchase Submissions on the account home page.
  3. Select the Single or Multiple package.
  4. Check the word cap, revision terms and validity language.
  5. Enter payment details and retain the emailed invoice.
  6. Upload the manuscript and inspect the Similarity Report at passage and source level.
  7. Use the revision option only for qualifying edited versions of that document.

How to request an organization demo or quote

The official organization page offers Schedule a call or Chat with an expert. That is a sales/demo conversation, not proof of a free account, free scan or free trial.

  1. Identify your organization type: university, publisher, research office, government body, corporate research group or admissions team.
  2. Describe expected users, annual submissions and document types.
  3. Ask whether pricing is based on seats, submissions or annual volume.
  4. Confirm repository options, API or manuscript-system integration, AI detection, regional hosting, support and onboarding.
  5. Request written limits, renewal terms, included products and overage charges.
  6. Test representative documents before signing.

What users like—and dislike

GetApp reports 4.7/5 from 18 reviews, while TechJockey reports 4.2/5 from 10 reviews. Reviewers commonly praise detailed reports, source databases, cloud access, multiple file formats, side-by-side comparison, multilingual support, security perception and time saved. Recurring criticisms include cost, limited value for casual users, friction when handling multiple versions and report overload. See GetApp’s reviews and TechJockey’s reviews.

These ratings are not directly comparable: platforms use different review counts and methodologies, and directory prices may lag the official vendor page. They are signals of user sentiment, not independent performance tests.

iThenticate compared with alternatives

Option Best suited to Where it differs
Copyleaks Buyers comparing broader similarity, AI-detection and API workflows May be less aligned with a publisher’s established scholarly-screening ecosystem
Grammarly Business Teams needing grammar, style and collaboration tools Not a direct replacement for specialized scholarly similarity screening
ProWritingAid Authors seeking readability, style and manuscript editing Not a publisher-oriented scholarly database workflow
Institution-provided Turnitin Students needing classroom submission and instructor feedback Institutions provide access; Turnitin does not sell individual licenses

When iThenticate is worth the cost

  • The document is a high-stakes manuscript, thesis, dissertation, grant proposal or publisher submission.
  • Scholarly and premium publisher sources matter.
  • You need a report an editor, adviser or integrity office can review.
  • A single $125 check is cheaper than the consequences of missing problematic overlap.
  • An organization needs repositories, collaboration, API or publishing-system integration.

When to avoid or reconsider it

  • You need inexpensive, frequent everyday checks.
  • Your main need is grammar, rewriting or style improvement.
  • You expect AI detection in an individual package.
  • Your documents are mostly code, formulas, tables, poetry or bullet lists.
  • You require transparent institutional pricing without a sales process.
  • Your recurring volume makes individual credits uneconomical.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Is the account individual or organization-managed?
  • Is the file under the 25,000- or 75,000-word limit?
  • Does the package include only similarity checking?
  • What revision threshold applies?
  • Will the document enter a repository, and can storage be controlled?
  • Which citations, references, preprints or common phrases are excluded?
  • Does the organization license include AI detection, and which languages qualify?
  • Are API, LMS or manuscript-tracking integrations included?
  • What happens to unused credits or documents when the account expires?
  • Are taxes, renewals, support and overages included in the quote?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the iThenticate demo really free?

The current official organization flow offers a sales consultation or demonstration. It does not establish a free individual trial, free scan or free account; individual packages are paid.

Can I buy Turnitin for myself?

Turnitin says it does not sell individual Turnitin licenses. Students may receive institutional access, while iThenticate sells individual submission credits.

Does a high similarity score prove plagiarism?

No. The score identifies matching text. A qualified reviewer must assess quotations, citations, standard language, prior versions and the context of each source.
