Apple and OpenAI announced a partnership on June 10, 2024, that placed ChatGPT inside selected Apple Intelligence features on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It was an integration and distribution deal—not a merger and not a replacement for Apple’s own AI models or Siri. ChatGPT initially entered the system through GPT-4o, with free accountless access and optional connection of existing ChatGPT accounts.
By August 2026, the integration was still documented in Apple and OpenAI support materials. However, Apple’s new Siri AI direction and a serious legal dispute over OpenAI’s hardware ambitions made the companies’ longer-term relationship less certain. The most accurate description is an optional ChatGPT channel within Apple’s broader AI system.
What Apple and OpenAI announced in June 2024
At WWDC24, Apple said ChatGPT would extend Apple Intelligence when Apple’s own tools determined that an outside service could provide a better answer or generation capability. OpenAI’s announcement identified GPT-4o as the initial model.
The integration covered Siri, systemwide Writing Tools, image-generation workflows and visual intelligence. Users could use the basic connection without creating a ChatGPT account. Existing free or paid ChatGPT users could link an account for eligible account-based capabilities and usage allowances.

Apple’s announcement described its own on-device models and Private Cloud Compute alongside ChatGPT. ChatGPT was therefore one component of Apple Intelligence, not the technology behind every Apple AI request (OpenAI’s announcement; Apple’s announcement).
What ChatGPT adds to Apple Intelligence
Siri handoffs
When enabled, Siri can ask permission to send a question to ChatGPT if Apple’s routing determines that ChatGPT is better suited to the request. Siri does not automatically forward every difficult question, and the handoff depends on the feature, settings, availability and region.
Writing Tools
ChatGPT can draft, rewrite or otherwise transform text from supported Apple writing workflows. This is useful when Apple’s built-in writing actions do not provide the style or generation capability a user wants.
Images, documents and photos
In supported contexts, ChatGPT can analyze an image or document and help explain its contents. Apple’s image-related experiences can also invoke ChatGPT image generation.

Visual intelligence and Shortcuts
Visual intelligence can use ChatGPT to identify or explain objects and places. Shortcuts can invoke ChatGPT for more complex requests, subject to the current operating-system release and regional availability. Apple and OpenAI list the current feature set in their support documentation (OpenAI’s Apple Intelligence FAQ; Apple’s iPhone guide).
Apple Intelligence is not the same as ChatGPT
| Layer | What it means |
|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence | Apple’s operating-system features, models, personal-context processing and privacy infrastructure. |
| ChatGPT integration | An optional OpenAI service used for selected writing, image, document, visual and conversational tasks. |
| Siri | Apple’s assistant, which may request a ChatGPT handoff when enabled. |
| ChatGPT app and account | OpenAI’s separate service with its own account, history, plans and model access. |
Apple’s own processing can occur on the device or through Private Cloud Compute. A request sent to ChatGPT is processed by OpenAI under the applicable integration and account rules. Saying that “ChatGPT powers Apple Intelligence” incorrectly collapses these separate layers.
How to enable ChatGPT on an iPhone or iPad
OpenAI documents this general path; labels can vary with software version, language, device and region:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Choose Set Up.
- Select Use ChatGPT Without an Account or Use ChatGPT with an Account.
- If connecting an account, complete OpenAI’s sign-in flow.
Supported devices may also display an enablement prompt the first time a Siri, Writing Tools, image or visual-intelligence feature needs ChatGPT.

If the option is missing
- Check that the device supports Apple Intelligence and is running a current supported operating system.
- Confirm that Apple Intelligence, the device language and Siri language are available in your country or region.
- Check that ChatGPT service access is available where you are.
- If the device is managed by an employer or school, ask whether an administrator or data-residency policy blocks the connection.
If sign-in or paid capabilities fail
- Sign in with the intended OpenAI account; an Apple ID does not automatically select the desired ChatGPT account.
- Verify that the connected account has the plan and permissions needed for the capability.
- Enterprise and Edu workspaces may have additional restrictions, especially when data residency is enabled.
Privacy: what is sent to OpenAI?
The handoff is not entirely on-device. Apple’s current guide says requests and attachments, plus limited context such as time zone, country, device type, language and the feature being used, may be sent to ChatGPT.
Without a ChatGPT account
- Apple asks for permission before sending a request, photo or document.
- Apple says the user’s IP address is obscured.
- OpenAI says requests are not stored and are not used to train its models under the accountless integration arrangement.
With a connected account
Connecting an account changes the applicable data rules. ChatGPT’s account settings, OpenAI policies and any organization controls govern data use. A paid plan may provide additional capabilities or higher limits, but it does not turn the Apple integration into an Apple-only processing path.
Users handling confidential material can decline an individual handoff or disable ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence & Siri. “IP address obscured” and “not stored without an account” do not mean that no information leaves the device (Apple’s current guide; OpenAI’s privacy description).
Devices, languages and regions
Apple’s 2024 announcement named iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus iPad and Mac models with an M1 chip or later, as Apple Intelligence launch hardware. That is not a complete 2026 compatibility list.

Current access depends on the exact device, operating-system version, country or region, device and Siri language, ChatGPT service availability and the individual Apple Intelligence feature. Apple warns that Apple Intelligence is not available on all iPhone models, languages or regions. Check Apple’s live support documentation before buying hardware or changing language settings.
Is a ChatGPT subscription required?
No. Apple and OpenAI announced basic accountless access. Users can also connect free or paid ChatGPT accounts, including Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu accounts, although workspace, feature, policy and data-residency restrictions may apply.
A subscription can matter for additional account-linked capabilities or higher usage allowances. The integration itself does not require buying a ChatGPT plan, and current prices should be checked on OpenAI’s official ChatGPT site because plan names, regional prices, taxes and billing arrangements can change.
Was the partnership exclusive?
It should not be described as exclusive. A 2025 court filing characterized the ChatGPT integration as non-exclusive and said Apple remained free to support other AI models (court-filed brief).

Apple continued developing its own AI stack and announced a next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri AI at WWDC on June 8, 2026. That announcement does not establish every future model provider, but it does show that OpenAI was not Apple’s sole AI strategy.

| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| June 10, 2024 | Apple and OpenAI announced ChatGPT integration into Apple Intelligence experiences. |
| October 28, 2024 | Apple announced the first Apple Intelligence features, including ChatGPT integration, were becoming available through software updates. |
| 2025 | Court materials described the integration as non-exclusive. |
| June 8, 2026 | Apple previewed a new generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. |
| July 2026 | Apple sued OpenAI and two former employees, alleging trade-secret misappropriation connected with OpenAI hardware efforts. |
| August 3, 2026 | OpenAI published a response disputing Apple’s allegations. |
| August 18, 2026 | Apple and OpenAI support pages still documented ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence, despite the public legal dispute. |
The lawsuit demonstrates a serious strategic and legal conflict; it does not, by itself, prove that the integration ended. Apple’s 2026 announcement likewise does not prove that Apple replaced OpenAI with a particular rival.
What each company gained
Apple
- A recognizable frontier chatbot for requests its own tools might not handle as well.
- Faster access to conversational, image and document capabilities.
- A broader Apple Intelligence offering without requiring Apple to build every capability internally before launch.
The public announcements do not establish revenue-sharing, payments or other financial terms.
OpenAI
- Distribution inside everyday iPhone, iPad and Mac workflows.
- Discovery by users who may never open a separate ChatGPT app.
- A channel for existing account holders to use eligible capabilities through Apple.
Specific user totals, guaranteed revenue and payment arrangements are not established by the cited announcements.
Practical trade-offs for users
- Convenience versus control: Apple reduces app switching, but users have less control over model selection and prompt framing.
- Privacy versus capability: Permission prompts and Apple’s privacy architecture coexist with third-party processing when a request is sent to ChatGPT.
- Free access versus limits: Accountless use lowers the barrier to entry, while limits and features can differ from those of paid accounts.
- Compatibility: A device that runs a current operating system may still lack Apple Intelligence or a particular feature in a particular language or region.
Bottom line
Apple’s ChatGPT partnership is real, useful and primarily about distribution and product integration. ChatGPT supplements Apple’s models inside selected Siri, writing, image, document, visual-intelligence and Shortcut workflows; it does not replace Apple Intelligence or Siri. Basic use can be accountless, but requests and attachments sent to ChatGPT leave the device, and logged-in users operate under OpenAI’s account policies. As of August 2026 the integration remained supported, while Apple’s independent AI development and litigation with OpenAI made the partnership’s long-term shape uncertain.
