A genuinely free guest post means there is no publication fee or required purchase, the article is reviewed for quality and relevance, and acceptance is never guaranteed. It does not automatically include a followed backlink. For personal-finance writers, a smaller publication with a real money audience can be more valuable than a large, unrelated domain.
What “free guest post” should mean
Use the term narrowly. A free editorial opportunity has all of these characteristics:
- No payment is required for consideration or publication.
- An editor reviews the idea or article for originality, accuracy and audience fit.
- There is no guaranteed acceptance, publication date or backlink.
- The publication can edit, delay or reject the submission.
Some sites operate both free editorial and paid sponsored-content programs. Treat those as separate options. A fee, required product purchase, reciprocal-link demand or “expedited approval” charge means the opportunity is not simply free.

Personal finance is a high-trust subject. A pitch about credit, investing, taxes, debt or insurance should include verifiable sources and stay within the writer’s demonstrated expertise. Disclose relevant qualifications or commercial relationships, avoid individualized financial advice, and explain geography and tax year whenever a rule or figure is mentioned. A site accepting any topic without editorial scrutiny is a poor environment for a finance brand.

- Recent articles show clear authorship and responsible sourcing.
- The site states where links may appear and which attributes they use.
- The article can earn relevant referral traffic, reputation or professional relationships even without a followed link.
Submission workflow that avoids wasted work
- Read the official guidelines. Confirm the site still accepts outside contributors and record the date checked.
- Find a coverage gap. Search the publication for related articles and identify what a new, evidence-based piece would add.
- Pitch two or three ideas. Give each a working headline, reader, problem, thesis and short outline.
- Show relevant expertise. Include two or three writing samples, credentials and any necessary disclosures.
- Wait for approval. Do not write a full article first unless the guidelines specifically request it.
- Submit exactly what is requested. Supply original copy, citations, image permissions, captions, alt text, a bio and headshot when required.
- Follow up once. Use the stated review period and avoid repeated or automated messages.
Example: HypeAuditor’s contributor process
HypeAuditor states that it does not charge contributors. Its process asks for topic ideas first, then an outline after approval, followed by the article, images with alt text, a short biography and headshot. It allows a maximum of one anchor-text link in the bio, rejects promotional or link-building submissions, says review can take up to two weeks and commonly publishes within about three weeks without guaranteeing a date. It also requires original work that is not later republished on a blog, LinkedIn, Medium or another site (HypeAuditor contributor guidelines).
Link rules and SEO expectations
Record the exact placement allowed: body citation, author bio, profile page or none. Never promise a “dofollow” link without a current official statement. A relevant editorial citation can help readers discover a source; a bio link can support credibility, but neither guarantees rankings.
For paid placements, Google recommends rel="sponsored"; contributor or user-generated links may use rel="ugc"; rel="nofollow" remains available when another qualification does not apply (Google’s outbound-link attributes). Google’s spam policies cover paid links that pass ranking credit, link exchanges and low-value content created to manipulate linking signals (Google spam policies).

- Dead “write for us” page: Search visibility does not prove the page is active.
- Paid placement disguised as editorial: A fee appears only after the pitch is accepted.
- Link farm: Unrelated industries, thin copy and optimized commercial anchors dominate.
- Metric inflation: Authority or traffic numbers are old, approximate or copied.
- No audience fit: Technical acceptance produces no meaningful readers for your subject.
- Guaranteed acceptance: Instant approval usually signals weak editorial control.
- Article-first submission: You spend time on a draft before the editor approves the idea.
- Repeated content: The same article is distributed across multiple sites.
- Unclear ownership: No credible editor, contact identity or business information is visible.
Tools for researching and tracking prospects
Google Search (google.com) and Google Search Console (Search Console) are free starting points. Ahrefs (), Hunter () offer paid research or outreach plans; check current pricing before subscribing. For five or ten carefully selected finance publications, a spreadsheet and personalized email are usually more appropriate than bulk outreach or a backlink package.
A practical prospect record
For every candidate, save the official URL, date checked, niche, target audience, pitch requirement, link location and attribute, credentials requested, originality or republication rule, review timing, free/paid status, acceptance difficulty and the reason it fits. This prevents a page-level update date from being mistaken for a current verification.
