There is no single best laptop for everyone in 2024. Choose the operating system and form factor around your software, then spend enough for 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD when possible. For browser-first schoolwork, choose a Chromebook Plus. For broad compatibility and gaming, choose Windows. For quiet, efficient general productivity, choose a MacBook Air if macOS supports your applications.
This is a historical 2024 buying guide. Models may now be discounted, discontinued, or replaced, so verify the exact configuration, warranty, and current price before ordering.
Quick picks by budget and use
| 2024 budget | Best fit | Examples to investigate | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $400 | Chromebook or basic Windows laptop | Acer Chromebook Plus 514, Lenovo Chromebook Plus, entry Acer, Lenovo or ASUS Windows models | Dimmer screens, slower processors and limited gaming or creative capability |
| $400–$700 | Mainstream Windows or Chromebook Plus | Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3/5, Acer Aspire, ASUS Vivobook | Build quality, webcam, display and upgradeability vary |
| $700–$1,000 | Best-value productivity | MacBook Air M2/M3 on sale, Lenovo Yoga, ASUS Zenbook, HP Envy, Dell Inspiron | Ports, display quality or repairability may be limited |
| $1,000–$1,500 | Premium ultraportable or business laptop | MacBook Air M3, Dell XPS 13, ThinkPad X1 Carbon, HP Spectre x360, ASUS Zenbook | Dedicated graphics are uncommon |
| $1,500–$2,000 | Creator, premium business or serious gaming | MacBook Pro 14, ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, Lenovo Legion Pro, Dell Precision | More weight, heat, fan noise and shorter unplugged runtime |
| $2,000+ | Specialized workstation or high-end gaming | MacBook Pro, Razer Blade, ASUS ROG, Lenovo Legion | Diminishing returns and expensive upgrades |
These are planning bands, not guaranteed 2024 prices. Retail prices and configurations change, and a low advertised starting price may exclude useful memory and storage. Leave room in the budget for upgrades, as RTINGS explains in its buying guide.
Start with what you do
School and everyday use
For email, documents, streaming and browser-based classes, an Acer Chromebook Plus 514 or comparable Chromebook Plus is the low-cost choice. Choose a Windows laptop instead when a school requires desktop software. A MacBook Air suits students whose required applications run on macOS; check the institution’s requirements before buying.

Work and business
ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, Surface Laptop and MacBook Air models cover office work. Business laptops often justify their price with better keyboards, security, docking and service options. Confirm compatibility with company VPNs, device management and specialist applications.
Photo and video
A MacBook Air handles light-to-moderate editing efficiently. Sustained professional work needs a MacBook Pro or a Windows laptop with a discrete GPU, adequate cooling, 32GB memory and at least a 1TB SSD. Check color coverage, card-reader availability and the exact software plug-ins you use.
Gaming
Buy a Windows laptop with a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU. Integrated graphics suit casual or older games, not demanding modern titles. Compare GPU wattage, cooling and the target resolution: a high-resolution OLED panel can look excellent while reducing frame rates. Chromebooks and MacBooks should not be the default gaming recommendation.
Programming and development
Choose the operating system required by your toolchain, then prioritize 16GB memory, 512GB storage, external-display support and battery life. Developers using virtual machines, containers or large projects should choose 32GB or more. Verify Linux support, drivers and corporate security requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTravel and drawing
Frequent travelers should weigh the laptop, charger, battery, keyboard, durability and ports more heavily than peak benchmark scores. A convertible 2-in-1 can help with notes and presentations, but verify active-pen support; the standard Surface Laptop, for example, is listed as not supporting Surface Pen input (Microsoft specifications).
Choose an operating system
Windows
Windows offers the widest range of prices, ports, peripherals, business software and games. Quality varies sharply between configurations: inexpensive systems may have poor screens, soldered memory, weak webcams and unwanted software. ARM-based Windows laptops can be efficient, but check every important application, driver, game anti-cheat system and peripheral before purchase.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- 14" HD Display: 14.0-inch diagonal, HD (1366 x 768), micro-edge, anti-glare. See your digital world in a whole new way. Enjoy movies and photos with the great image quality and high-definition detail of 1 million pixels.
- Memory & Storage: 4 GB LPDDR4x & 64 GB eMMC Storage. Adequate high-bandwidth RAM to smoothly run multiple applications and browser tabs all at once. An embedded multimedia card provides reliable flash-based storage.
- Ports:2 x USB 3.0 Type-A,1 x USB 3.0 Type-C,1 x HDMI,1 x Headphone Jack
- Chrome OS: Chromebook is a computer for the way the modern world works, with thousands of apps. Enjoy the seamless simplicity that comes with Google Chrome and Android apps, all integrated into one laptop. It’s fast, simple, and secure.
macOS
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are strong choices for quiet productivity, battery efficiency, displays and Apple-device integration. They are poor choices when you need Windows-only software, certain games, specialized peripherals or inexpensive post-purchase memory and storage upgrades. Check professional plug-ins, virtualization and accessories in advance.
ChromeOS
ChromeOS is simple and low-maintenance for Google Workspace, writing, email and web applications. Confirm that required apps work in a browser or through Android/Linux support, check local-storage needs and review the device’s update-support period. It is not a substitute for a Windows gaming or workstation laptop.

Specifications worth paying for
Processor
Generation, power class and cooling matter more than a brand label. For basic use, a modern Intel Core i3/Core 3, AMD Ryzen 3 or equivalent Chromebook chip is sufficient. Mainstream buyers should target Core i5/Core Ultra 5 or Ryzen 5; heavier creation benefits from Core i7/Core Ultra 7 or Ryzen 7. H-, HS- and HX-class chips suit gaming and workstation workloads, but may be louder and less efficient. A higher model number does not automatically make a better laptop.
Memory and storage
- 8GB RAM: Only for light use or a tightly constrained budget; it is increasingly limiting.
- 16GB RAM: The preferred Windows or macOS baseline for several years of use; also preferable in a Chromebook with many tabs or Linux applications.
- 32GB or more: For video editing, virtual machines, large development projects and professional software.
- 256GB SSD: Bare minimum and quickly restrictive.
- 512GB SSD: Better general-purpose target.
- 1TB SSD: Appropriate for games, media libraries and creative work.
Avoid eMMC storage in a primary Windows computer when an SSD alternative is available. Check whether RAM and storage are soldered; non-upgradeable memory makes the initial configuration decisive.
Display
Prefer 1,920×1,200 or 1,920×1,080 resolution, with 16:10 providing more vertical workspace than 16:9. Around 300 nits is a more useful brightness target than a dim budget panel. Photo and video users should check color coverage. A 120Hz-or-faster panel helps gaming and smooth scrolling. OLED offers excellent contrast and color but can use more power, reflect more light and carry image-retention concerns. Touch is useful on a 2-in-1, but can add cost and reduce battery life.
Battery, ports and input
Battery runtime depends on brightness, wireless use, calls, browser tabs, processor mode, resolution, refresh rate, battery health and background software. Manufacturer figures are controlled tests, not promises; Microsoft, for example, describes an “up to 20 hours” local-video result and says actual life varies by settings and use (Surface specifications).

Check whether USB-C supports charging and video, and whether you also get USB-A, HDMI, a headphone jack, SD or microSD, Thunderbolt/USB4, modern Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional cellular connectivity. Webcam, microphones, speakers, keyboard layout, touchpad accuracy, fingerprint or face login and spill resistance can matter more than a small processor difference for remote work.
Best laptop choices by price
Under $400: Chromebook Plus or basic Windows
Buy: Acer Chromebook Plus 514 or a comparable Lenovo Chromebook Plus for browser-first work. Choose an entry Acer, Lenovo or ASUS Windows model only when you need Windows software.
Configuration: Aim for 8GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage on ChromeOS; for Windows, avoid 4GB RAM and prefer at least 8GB and an SSD.
Compromise: Screens, webcams, keyboards and processors are basic. This tier is unsuitable for serious gaming, advanced editing and large local files.
$400–$700: mainstream value
Buy: Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3/5, Acer Aspire or ASUS Vivobook, comparing the exact configuration rather than the family name.
Configuration: Prefer Ryzen 5/Core i5-class processing, 16GB RAM where available and a 512GB SSD. A 1,920×1,200 display is worth choosing over a low-resolution panel.

$700–$1,000: productivity sweet spot
Buy: A sale-priced MacBook Air M2/M3 when macOS fits, or Lenovo Yoga, ASUS Zenbook/Vivobook S, HP Envy and Dell Inspiron configurations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Configuration: Select 16GB RAM and 512GB storage when possible. Treat a premium chassis with only 8GB soldered memory as a poor long-term value.
$1,000–$1,500: premium Windows or Mac
Buy: MacBook Air M3, Dell XPS 13, ThinkPad X1 Carbon, HP Spectre x360 or ASUS Zenbook according to keyboard, business, convertible, display and port priorities.
Compromise: Thin systems commonly omit ports and dedicated graphics. Compare the exact screen and memory configuration, not just the product name.
$1,500 and above: sustained workloads
Buy: MacBook Pro for supported creative workflows; ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) or Lenovo Legion for gaming and GPU work; Dell Precision or another mobile workstation for certified professional software. The 2024 G14 product guide lists specified configurations with Ryzen 9 8945HS, RTX 4070-class graphics, OLED options, 32GB memory and a roughly 1.5kg-class chassis (ASUS product guide).
Best Value
- Designed for mobility with a slim 0.71-inch profile and lightweight 3.24 lb chassis, making it easy to carry between home, office
Compromise: Gaming and workstation machines bring larger chargers, heat, fan noise, weight and shorter demanding-use battery life. Expensive upgrades also produce diminishing returns for ordinary office work.
Repairable choice: Framework Laptop 13
Framework Laptop 13 is compelling when replaceable parts, modular upgrades and long ownership matter more than the lowest initial price. Confirm the chosen memory, storage and operating-system option; repairability does not guarantee the best gaming or creator performance.

Students
Check department requirements first: engineering, architecture, nursing, business and media programs may require Windows-only applications. A 13-inch model is easier to carry; a 15- or 16-inch model is more comfortable for split-screen work but increases bag size and weight.
Remote workers
Prioritize webcam, microphone, speakers, keyboard, reliable Wi-Fi, docking and a comfortable display. A fast laptop with a poor camera can be the wrong business purchase.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Business buyers
ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook and similar lines often offer better service, security and parts availability than inexpensive consumer models. Compare warranty and fleet-management support, not just CPU specifications.
Refurbished buyers
- Prefer manufacturer-certified stock when the price difference is reasonable.
- Verify battery condition, return period, warranty, charger, keyboard layout and cosmetic grade.
- Check that operating-system support is not near its end.
- Ensure the machine is not organization-locked or enrolled in remote management.
Configurations and deals to avoid
- 4GB RAM on Windows.
- 128GB storage for a primary computer.
- Low-resolution screens on large 15- or 16-inch laptops.
- A high-refresh gaming display paired with an entry GPU that cannot drive it well.
- Premium laptops with 8GB soldered RAM.
- Touchscreens bought only because they sound premium.
- MacBooks or Chromebooks bought without checking required software.
- ARM Windows systems bought without checking drivers and applications.
- Listings that do not state the exact model number and configuration.
How to shop a 2024 deal safely
- Write down your required applications, games, ports, screen size and travel limit.
- Compare the exact CPU, RAM, SSD, display, battery and GPU configuration.
- Check the manufacturer and retailer warranty, return window and whether the unit is new, clearance or refurbished.
- Compare the sale price with the same configuration elsewhere; an inflated list price is not a real discount.
- Prefer 16GB/512GB over a newer processor paired with 8GB/256GB when prices are close.
- For ARM Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, verify every essential application and peripheral before ordering.
Accessory costs can change the total: budget for a USB-C dock, charger, sleeve, external monitor, mouse, external SSD or headset only when you actually need one. Protection plans make more sense for frequent travelers or costly repairs than for an inexpensive laptop.
The simplest recommendation
Choose a Chromebook Plus for low-cost, browser-first work; Windows for maximum compatibility and gaming; and a MacBook Air for efficient general productivity when macOS fits your software. Buy a gaming or workstation laptop only when you have a genuine GPU workload, and spend first on the configuration—16GB memory, a 512GB SSD, a usable display and the ports you will actually use.
