Verizon is the bigger telecom company today by second-quarter 2026 revenue, market capitalization and reported connection scale. AT&T is the faster-moving challenger in several growth measures: postpaid phone additions, broadband additions, fiber expansion and total revenue growth.
There is no single “bigger” metric. The answer changes depending on whether you mean corporate scale, wireless connections, broadband customers, fiber reach, financial capacity or future growth.
What “bigger” means in telecom
AT&T and Verizon report different customer categories, so a serious comparison separates the measurements rather than combining them into an unsupported overall score.
- Corporate scale: revenue, market capitalization and enterprise value.
- Wireless scale: retail phone lines, connected devices, prepaid and postpaid customers, business accounts and fixed-wireless connections.
- Broadband scale: fiber, fixed-wireless and legacy broadband connections.
- Growth: net additions, service-revenue growth and footprint expansion.
- Financial strength: cash flow, debt, capital spending, dividends and buybacks.
- Network position: coverage, capacity, reliability and geographic availability.
Each measure answers a different question. Verizon leads on present scale; AT&T currently shows more operating momentum in several categories.

Verizon leads in revenue and market value

AT&T’s quarterly figures come from its Q2 2026 earnings release. Verizon’s revenue and operating commentary are reported in its Q2 2026 results.
Verizon’s revenue decline needs context: equipment revenue fell by nearly 20%, while mobility and broadband service revenue grew 2.8%. Equipment sales can move total revenue without changing the recurring customer-service trend. AT&T’s growth was helped by its Advanced Connectivity category, which includes fiber and wireless services.
Market capitalization is a snapshot of share prices multiplied by shares outstanding. It changes every trading day and reflects investor expectations, not just current operating size. It is also different from enterprise value, which incorporates debt and cash.
Verizon reports the larger wireless connection base
Verizon’s 2025 Form 10-K reported approximately 116 million consumer wireless retail connections, including fixed wireless access, and about 31 million business wireless retail postpaid connections. Its consumer total included roughly 96 million postpaid and 20 million prepaid connections. The filing is available at the SEC.
Those figures are not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison with AT&T disclosures. One company may include connected devices, fixed-wireless accounts, business lines or other categories that the other presents separately. Retail and wholesale customers are also treated differently, and one household account can contain multiple devices.

Therefore, Verizon appears larger by the connection totals it publishes, but the data do not justify a precise ranking of identical “subscribers.” AT&T marketing language about serving more than 100 million U.S. families is not a substitute for a comparable wireless-subscriber count.
AT&T is adding customers faster in Q2 2026

AT&T’s 646,000 internet additions comprised 367,000 fiber and 279,000 fixed-wireless additions. Verizon reported 193,000 fixed-wireless and 155,000 fiber additions. AT&T’s Advanced Connectivity label is broader than a conventional broadband-only measure, so the headline totals should not be treated as identical products.
The quarter shows why “bigger” and “growing faster” can produce different answers. Verizon started with greater scale; AT&T added more customers in the reported quarter.

AT&T’s expansion
AT&T reported 38.6 million consumer and business locations reached with fiber and remains on track to exceed 40 million by the end of 2026, with a longer-term target above 60 million by 2030. It added 367,000 fiber customers in Q2. A location reached means a premise passed or served by network infrastructure; it is not necessarily a paying subscriber.
AT&T’s fiber growth includes organic construction and the acquisition of substantially all of Lumen’s mass-market fiber business, completed February 2, 2026. That transaction affects year-over-year comparisons. AT&T also changed segment reporting in 2026 to reflect a more convergence-oriented model.

Verizon’s Fios and Frontier position
Verizon reported approximately 17.1 million fixed-wireless and fiber broadband connections in Q2 2026. Its 2025 annual report described about 11 million consumer and 3 million business broadband connections at December 31, 2025, across Fios, fixed wireless and DSL categories.
Verizon’s wireline business historically concentrated on nine Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states plus Washington, D.C. Its January 2026 Frontier acquisition expanded its fiber footprint to 31 states and Washington, D.C. Verizon therefore has a larger disclosed broadband connection base, while AT&T has the more aggressive disclosed fiber-expansion story.
Claims that either company is “the largest fiber provider” require a definition: locations passed, paying customers, geographic footprint and fiber revenue can produce different winners.
Financial strength and shareholder returns
AT&T reported the following Q2 2026 figures:
- Adjusted EBITDA: $12.3 billion.
- Free cash flow: $4.7 billion.
- Total debt: $144.0 billion.
- Net debt: $126.4 billion.
- Capital investment: $6.1 billion.
Verizon reported a 9.9% increase in operating cash flow and a 16.0% increase in free cash flow during the first half of 2026, and increased its 2026 share-buyback target to as much as $4.5 billion. AT&T planned approximately $10 billion of repurchases in 2026 and said it expects to return more than $45 billion through dividends and repurchases during 2026–2028.
These figures should not be turned into a definitive “financially stronger” verdict without comparable GAAP income, adjusted EBITDA, debt, capital expenditure and free-cash-flow definitions from both companies. Adjusted EBITDA is non-GAAP, and dividend capacity depends on cash flow, leverage and future investment needs.

Network quality cannot be settled by company size
Verizon and AT&T both market extensive 5G and nationwide coverage. A company coverage map is not independent testing, and corporate scale does not prove that one network is fastest or most reliable at a particular address.

Wireless customers
Verizon’s larger reported connection base may appeal to customers who prioritize an established national network and broad product scale. AT&T’s stronger recent postpaid additions indicate momentum, but additions alone do not determine coverage, price or service quality at your address.
Fiber and home-internet buyers
AT&T deserves close consideration where its fiber is available, particularly for customers who value fast uploads and a wireless-plus-home-internet bundle. Verizon may be the more practical choice where Fios or its fixed-wireless service is available and AT&T fiber is not. Fiber availability is address-specific.
Rural households
Coverage, signal quality and local fixed-wireless capacity can matter more than corporate size. Check both providers at the exact address and consider installation timing, congestion and expected usage.

Business buyers
Compare managed networking, security, IoT, private networks, cloud connectivity, service-level agreements and local support. Consumer wireless connection totals do not measure enterprise capability.
Investors
Verizon currently offers greater revenue, market value and reported connection scale. AT&T offers a more pronounced fiber-led growth narrative and faster recent customer additions. Debt, dividend sustainability, capital intensity, valuation and execution risk require separate analysis.
How to compare actual service offers
- Check AT&T Fiber availability at your address through AT&T Fiber.
- Check Verizon Fios or fixed-wireless availability through Verizon Home Internet.
- Compare the total monthly bill, including taxes, equipment, installation, autopay requirements and the price after any promotion.
- Check advertised download and upload speeds, data limits, congestion expectations and contract or early-termination terms.
- Calculate wireless bundle savings only after confirming that the home service is actually available.
Prices, promotions and eligibility change by address, customer status, device trade-in and billing terms, so a headline rate is not a reliable national comparison.
The wider competitive landscape
AT&T and Verizon are not the only national-scale wireless operators. T-Mobile affects pricing, subscriber growth, spectrum strategy and network comparisons. Regional fiber companies, cable providers, municipal networks and mobile virtual network operators can be better fits in particular markets. Local availability often matters more than national rankings.

AT&T is growing faster in the latest quarter across postpaid phone additions, internet additions and fiber expansion. Verizon is the scale leader; AT&T is the more aggressive fiber-and-convergence growth story.
