You can’t add a PayPal account, PayPal balance, or linked bank account to Apple Pay as a standalone payment method. Instead, add an eligible PayPal-issued debit or credit card to Apple Wallet. In the U.S., PayPal lists several eligible cards, but availability depends on the card, account, device, and region.
What you can add to Apple Pay
Apple Pay uses eligible payment cards from participating issuers; it does not import a PayPal login or balance as a card. PayPal’s U.S. help page lists these cards as eligible for Apple Pay:

Before you start
Have the eligible PayPal card and a compatible Apple device ready. Apple’s setup requirements include an Apple Account signed in on the device and Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or a passcode. The device and country or region must support Apple Pay, and PayPal or the issuer may ask you to verify the card. Current device software is recommended; Apple also recommends Apple Account two-factor authentication when troubleshooting a card that will not add. - Follow the onscreen steps and any verification request from PayPal or the card issuer.

Does Apple Pay spend your PayPal balance?
That depends on the PayPal card. A PayPal Debit Card transaction is handled through that debit card and its associated PayPal account. A PayPal credit card or Mastercard is a separate credit product, not a way to spend an existing PayPal balance. PayPal promotes balance and activity access for eligible PayPal Debit Card users, but do not assume the same funding arrangement or Wallet features apply to every PayPal-branded card. Separately from adding a card for payments, Apple Wallet can connect to some eligible accounts to show balance and activity. Apple says eligible connected accounts may show a current balance and up to two years of transaction history, and identifies a similar U.S. feature for PayPal debit-card users. It may not appear for every PayPal card or user; transaction information can also be delayed, and pending transactions may not show immediately. Why won’t my PayPal card add to Apple Pay?
Check the likely cause before retrying. Apple’s error wording can help identify whether the issue is with the card details, device limit, or issuer approval.
| Problem | What to check or do |
|---|---|
| Add to Apple Wallet is missing | Confirm that you have an eligible, issued card and that it is active. Update PayPal, check the alternate app navigation path, and verify that your device and region support Apple Pay. |
| Could Not Add Card | Check device compatibility, region, software, Apple Account sign-in, passcode or biometric setup, and two-factor authentication. If it persists, contact PayPal or the card issuer. |
| Invalid Card | Confirm the card details and that the specific PayPal card product is eligible; an active PayPal account alone is not enough. |
| Card Device Limit | Remove the card from an old or unused Apple device if possible. If the limit remains, ask PayPal or the issuer to help. |
| Issuer declines or cannot verify the card | Contact PayPal or the issuer. Apple says issuers make approval and decline decisions. |
| Setup fails intermittently | Restart the device, retry on a reliable internet connection, and check Apple service status. PayPal, the issuer, Apple, or a network issue may be temporary. |
Apple recommends checking compatibility, supported regions, current software, authentication, and service status before contacting the issuer. Apple’s troubleshooting steps and error guidance PayPal also notes that card availability is not universal across devices. PayPal’s availability guidance
Remove the PayPal card from Wallet
- Open Wallet and tap the PayPal card.
- Tap More → Card Details → Remove Card, then confirm.
Removing a card from Wallet removes it from that device; it does not cancel the underlying PayPal card or close your PayPal account. To close or cancel either account or card, use the relevant PayPal account or card-management process. Apple Pay card management · PayPal card instructions
Where you can use the card
PayPal says its PayPal Debit Card can be used with Apple Wallet at supported in-store and online Apple Pay checkouts. Actual acceptance still depends on the merchant, card-network rules, card eligibility, device, and region. If a merchant accepts PayPal but not Apple Pay, use the merchant’s PayPal checkout option instead. PayPal’s Apple Wallet page
