Those recommendations are mission-dependent. A photographer may need only B&H and Adorama; a PC builder should usually skip the Manhattan circuit; and a general shopper may be satisfied with Best Buy and Apple.
Option A: the all-purpose Manhattan gadget day
1. Start at B&H Photo Video
B&H is at 420 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10001. B&H describes its New York SuperStore as more than 70,000 square feet with as many as 10,000 demo products. Allow the most time here. Search the exact model on B&H’s site before visiting, then confirm that the New York store shows it as available. Online orders can be held for up to five business days; pickup requires order information and government-issued photo identification, with proxy pickup possible under B&H’s stated conditions. Customer parking is available at 347 West 34th Street, including one hour free for purchases of at least $100 and two hours for purchases of at least $300, subject to the store’s terms. Adorama is at 42 West 18th Street, New York, NY 10011. Its listed regular hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday closed and Sunday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. That Saturday closure can invalidate an otherwise sensible itinerary.
The store covers cameras, cinematography, studio lighting, tripods, pro audio, computers, printers, drones, musical equipment, gaming, virtual reality, smart-home products and accessories. One-on-one consultations are available for cameras, lighting, audio, video, computers, instruments and pre-owned gear. Adorama also offers in-store and contactless pickup, used-equipment evaluation, trade-in and same-day Manhattan delivery subject to charges, store hours and a cutoff two hours before closing. Its page says hundreds of products qualify for free in-store pickup, with other items shippable to the store.
3. Compare mainstream products at Best Buy Union Square
The Union Square store is at 52 East 14th Street, New York, NY 10003. Its listed services and departments include Geek Squad, Apple, Windows, Samsung, Sony, LG, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, gaming, premium home theater, trade-in and Apple-authorized service.
This is the practical stop for earbuds, headphones, phones, general-purpose laptops, monitors, consoles, televisions, smart-home products and appliances. Check both shelf availability and “pickup today” status for Union Square. The national Best Buy catalog does not prove that a product is physically at this location. Best Buy also offers in-store and curbside pickup, product-selection help, setup and troubleshooting, trade-in and Shop With an Expert. Apple Fifth Avenue is at 767 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10153. Apple lists it as open 24 hours every day and offers drop-in shopping, order pickup, Genius Bar appointments, Today at Apple sessions and Apple Vision Pro demonstrations.
It is a strong final stop for hands-on Apple comparisons, setup help or the flagship-store experience. Book a Vision Pro demo or Genius Bar appointment ahead of time; the store’s all-day opening does not mean those services operate continuously. Apple advertises trade-in, carrier deals, education savings, financing and online ordering for pickup, but those terms are conditional and may not beat another retailer’s promotion. Shorter routes for different shoppers
General shopper: two stops
Choose Best Buy Union Square plus Apple Fifth Avenue if you mainly need a phone, laptop, headphones, gaming equipment, smart-home product or Apple support. Add B&H instead of Apple when you want deeper audio, computer-accessory or camera selection.
Creator route
- Spend the morning at B&H comparing bodies, lenses, microphones, lighting, storage and computer accessories.
- Use Adorama for a second opinion, a consultation, used gear, trade-in or a broader lighting and musical-equipment setup.
- Add Best Buy only if you still need a mainstream laptop, monitor, console or consumer audio product.
Bring a written specification list: lens or camera mount, required resolution and frame rate, microphone connection, computer ports, memory-card type, battery and charger compatibility, storage capacity, maximum budget and how the equipment will be carried home.
PC-builder route
Make Micro Center Brooklyn or Flushing the destination rather than an extra Manhattan stop. Its Knowledge Bar and repair services can help shoppers who are not building independently.
Select the store on Micro Center’s site before traveling. Local pricing and inventory appear only after a location is selected, and scarce parts should be reserved for pickup. Verify CPU socket, motherboard chipset, RAM type, power-supply capacity, case dimensions, graphics-card length and cooling clearance before paying. How to prepare before leaving
- Make a shortlist. Record exact model numbers, acceptable alternatives, budget and must-have features.
- Check the selected store. Select the physical location and look for language such as “pickup today,” not merely general website availability.
- Reserve essential items. Wait for the pickup-ready confirmation before crossing the city.
- Bring compatibility evidence. Photograph ports, labels and existing equipment; carry model numbers and mounting or lens information.
- Plan the total cost. Include New York City sales tax, required accessories, protection plans, financing terms, delivery and possible return shipping.
- Plan transport. Arrange delivery for televisions, desktop PCs, monitors and heavy audio equipment instead of carrying them through several neighborhoods.

Specialist stores are usually the better choice for lenses, microphones, lighting, tripods, audio interfaces and professional video equipment. Big-box stores are more efficient for televisions, consoles, appliances, mainstream laptops and smart-home products. Manufacturer stores are useful for account support, setup and brand-specific service, not automatically for the lowest price.
Inspect used and open-box equipment carefully
Used cameras and lenses can offer strong value, but inspect before accepting the item. Check shutter count, sensor condition, lens fungus or haze, scratches, decentering, battery health, included caps and chargers, return period, warranty, serial number and compatibility with your existing system. For open-box computers and accessories, verify every included cable, adapter and license.

Common failures and how to recover
Hours changed
Adorama’s listed Saturday closure is the most obvious itinerary hazard. B&H hours can change for holidays and religious observance; Best Buy and Micro Center hours vary by location; Apple’s always-open listing does not guarantee continuous appointments or demonstrations. Check official pages immediately before departure and call for unusual repair, demo, trade-in or large-item needs.
The website shows the product, but the store does not
- Select the exact store.
- Confirm pickup-today eligibility.
- Place the reservation.
- Wait for pickup confirmation.
- Bring the order number and required identification.
Do not treat a national catalog listing or an order acknowledgment as proof that the item is ready at the counter.
The purchase is too heavy or fragile
Use a compact, secure backpack for small gear, keep receipts and packaging, and never leave expensive purchases unattended in a restaurant, car or hotel lobby. Ask about delivery for televisions, desktop computers, monitors and bulky audio equipment.
An accessory is incompatible
Frequent mistakes include the wrong camera mount, a USB-C cable without the required data or display standard, an underpowered charger, an incompatible memory card, a lens that does not cover the intended sensor, or a monitor missing the needed input, refresh rate or adaptive-sync support. Bring photographs and model numbers rather than relying on memory.
Practical expectations for a New York shopping day
The four-stop Manhattan route is feasible as a curated comparison day, not as a leisurely tour with unlimited sightseeing, meals and large purchases. Use walking and subway connections between clusters, but check a live map on the day because service and walking conditions change. Avoid carrying expensive equipment from the first stop through the rest of the itinerary; use delivery, hotel drop-off or a planned return trip when practical.
Do not assume New York stores are cheaper than online retailers without a dated comparison. The value may instead be trying products in person, getting specialist advice, obtaining immediate pickup, trading in older equipment or receiving local setup and service.
