Yes—Amazon hired Julia White as chief marketing officer and vice president of worldwide marketing at Amazon Web Services (AWS). The appointment was reported on November 18, 2024, when White succeeded Raejeanne Skillern and joined AWS CEO Matt Garman’s leadership team. AWS materials still listed White in the role as of August 18, 2026.
What Amazon announced
White’s appointment was an AWS leadership move, not a promotion to Amazon’s overall corporate CMO. GeekWire reported the change from an internal memo circulated by AWS CEO Matt Garman.
Her formal title is Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, AWS. She replaced Raejeanne Skillern, who was leaving Amazon for new career opportunities, board work and family priorities, according to the memo as reported by GeekWire. The available reporting does not establish a more precise public start date than the November 18, 2024 announcement.
Amazon did not publicly attach a detailed new marketing strategy, compensation figure or specific reorganization to the appointment.

Julia White’s Microsoft and SAP background
White spent roughly 20 years at Microsoft, where her work covered product marketing and businesses connected with Exchange Server, Office, Azure, developer tools and servers. AWS specifically describes her experience in product marketing for Office 365 and Azure; that should not be confused with leading all of Microsoft’s marketing organization.
She later joined SAP as chief marketing and solutions officer and a member of SAP’s Executive Board. Her SAP responsibilities extended beyond brand marketing into product and solutions marketing, communications and the company’s cloud-first and Business AI messaging.
SAP announced on July 30, 2024, that White and fellow executive Scott Russell would leave the Executive Board by mutual agreement, effective August 31, 2024. SAP credited White with modernizing marketing and communications and building SAP’s product-marketing function around a cloud-first model. SAP’s announcement did not say that she was leaving specifically to join AWS.

Why the hire matters for AWS
The appointment gave AWS a marketing leader with experience spanning cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, applications, developers and corporate communications. That combination is relevant as AWS competes with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud for technology budgets and executive attention.
Enterprise positioning
Microsoft and SAP sell into large organizations with complex purchasing processes involving CIOs, business leaders, developers and partners. White’s background may help AWS explain how infrastructure and cloud services connect to broader business transformation—an important message for customers that are evaluating more than raw computing capacity.

Cloud and AI messaging
When White joined, AWS was emphasizing renewed growth and generative AI while trying to convert substantial AI investment into sustained customer demand. Her experience marketing Azure and SAP’s cloud and Business AI offerings gives her direct familiarity with how major enterprise technology companies frame those products.
That does not prove Amazon hired her to “fix” AWS marketing or specifically to defeat Microsoft. Those are interpretations, not announced reasons. The appointment may signal that AWS wanted a more integrated way to communicate its cloud, AI, developer and partner offerings to several audiences at once.

AWS’s current biography says White leads a global marketing team serving customers, developers and partners. Those groups need different kinds of evidence: technical capability for developers, business outcomes for executives and enablement opportunities for partners. A worldwide marketing remit has to connect those messages without reducing AWS to an AI-only story.
The AWS business context in November 2024
White joined shortly after Matt Garman became AWS CEO. At the time, AWS was balancing its established cloud infrastructure business with a push into generative AI and newer workloads.
GeekWire’s November 2024 report cited AWS’s third-quarter 2024 results: revenue of $27.4 billion, up 19% year over year, and operating income of $10.4 billion. These figures are historical context for the appointment, not current AWS financial results.
The competitive challenge was broader than advertising. AWS needed to show enterprises, developers and partners why its cloud and AI services should form part of long-term technology strategies while Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud pursued the same customers.

What White’s AWS role has looked like since the appointment
First-party AWS materials continued to identify White as chief marketing officer and vice president of worldwide marketing in 2026. AWS has described her remit as serving customers, developers and partners and has featured her in discussions involving cloud adoption, AI, agentic AI and AWS’s relationship with OpenAI.
AWS also listed her as “VP & Global CMO, AWS” for VivaTech 2026. An April 2026 AWS-related announcement likewise identified her as AWS CMO in connection with business adoption of agentic AI.
Those later listings matter because they confirm that the 2024 appointment was not merely a short-lived or inaccurately reported change. As of August 18, 2026, the public evidence still showed White in the AWS marketing leadership role.

What the appointment does—and does not—establish
- Established: White became AWS CMO and worldwide marketing leader in 2024.
- Established: She brought senior experience from approximately two decades at Microsoft and from SAP’s Executive Board.
- Established: AWS continued listing her in the role through August 2026.
- Reasonable interpretation: Her background is well matched to AWS’s enterprise-cloud, developer, partner and AI communications challenges.
- Not established: Her compensation, an exact start date, a specific internal reorganization or a private recruitment rationale.
- Not established: That White directly manages AWS product roadmaps or that her appointment alone represents an AWS rebrand.
The most accurate framing is therefore a 2024 executive appointment with an updated 2026 status check—not a new 2026 hire or proof of a particular strategy change.
