There is no single best cell phone deal. The right choice depends on whether you want the lowest monthly bill, a discounted phone, family savings, Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile coverage, or extras such as international service. As checked August 16–18, 2026, Mint Mobile is a leading low-cost annual option, US Mobile offers unusual multi-network flexibility, Visible is a simple Verizon-network choice, and the major carriers remain the strongest source of phone promotions—but usually with longer commitments.
Use the comparison below to separate a genuinely cheap plan from a phone deal that only looks free after years of bill credits.
Quick picks: the best cell phone deals by need
| Reader priority | Best starting points | Main catch |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest effective annual price | Mint Mobile | Requires paying for a full year upfront and uses T-Mobile’s network. |
| Cheapest flexible service | US Mobile | Confirm the selected network, priority data and renewal terms. |
| Simple Verizon-network plan | Visible | Hotspot speed and premium features are limited on the standard plan. |
| Verizon coverage with prepaid multiline discounts | Verizon Prepaid | Auto Pay, line count and discount timing affect the advertised price. |
| Major-carrier switcher incentive | T-Mobile | The advertised $400 reward requires an eligible port-in, new line and plan. |
| AT&T prepaid service or a budget phone | AT&T Prepaid | Taxes, plan minimums and activation restrictions apply. |
| Largest phone subsidy | T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon | “Free” phones generally require trade-ins, qualifying plans and 24–36 months of credits. |
| Mobile bundled with existing home internet | Spectrum Mobile or Xfinity Mobile | The attractive mobile price generally requires qualifying broadband service. |
Prices and promotions are volatile. Check the provider’s live plan page and offer terms before paying, and treat the prices below as a snapshot checked August 16–18, 2026.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Lower recurring service prices: monthly discounts, Auto Pay savings, annual-prepay rates, loyalty reductions and multiline pricing.
- Switching incentives: prepaid cards, bill credits and reimbursements for eligible switchers.
- Phone promotions: free or discounted devices tied to a new line, port-in, trade-in, installment plan or qualifying rate plan.
- Bundle savings: discounts for combining wireless with home internet or other account services.
A $1,000 phone promotion is not automatically better than a plan that saves $30 every month. Compare service-only value and device value separately, then calculate the combined cost over the period you expect to stay.
Best low-cost cell phone plans
Mint Mobile: best for a low-cost single line when you can pay annually
Mint Mobile is a strong starting point for an unlocked-phone customer who wants a low effective monthly rate. Recent comparison coverage lists Mint’s 6GB plan at $15 per month, or $180 for a full year, when paid annually, and its unlimited plan at $30 per month. Mint also increased data allowances and the unlimited plan’s hotspot allowance in June 2026, according to that coverage.
The important qualification is the payment structure: the $15 figure is not the amount charged each month. You commit the full annual amount upfront, and renewal pricing may differ from an introductory offer. Mint runs on T-Mobile’s network, so check service at home, work and the places you travel.
Best for: BYOD customers, light-to-moderate data users and people comfortable with annual prepayment.
Watch for: upfront cost, renewal pricing, network priority, roaming and the difference between unlimited phone data and unlimited high-speed hotspot.
US Mobile: best for multi-network flexibility
US Mobile’s published comparison lists a Light plan at $8 per month for 2GB and an Unlimited Starter plan at $25 per month at regular monthly pricing. The provider also describes access to all three major U.S. networks. Taxes are included and Auto Pay is not required according to the provider’s materials.
That flexibility can be valuable if coverage varies between networks or you want more control than a typical MVNO provides. Confirm which network your plan uses, whether switching networks has limits, and how priority data, roaming and hotspot allowances work on the exact tier you select.
Best for: Very light-data users and technically confident customers who value network choice.

Visible: best simple Verizon-network option for one line
Visible’s indexed plan page lists its standard plan at $25 per month with taxes and fees included, and Visible+ at $35 per month. The standard plan includes unlimited data and unlimited hotspot at a stated 5Mbps speed; premium-plan features differ.
Visible is particularly easy to compare for a single-line shopper because its headline rate does not depend on assembling four lines or adding Auto Pay. It is less suitable if you need high-speed hotspot, extensive international benefits or traditional family-plan management.
Do not rely on old search-result discount codes: some indexed Visible promotions from earlier in 2026 have expired.

Verizon Prepaid: best Verizon-network value for some families
Verizon Prepaid advertises one line as low as $35 per month with Auto Pay after the first month. Its advertised structure also shows $80 per month for two lines and as low as $35 per line for four unlimited lines after applicable multiline and Auto Pay discounts.
The advertised first-month price can be higher, and taxes, fees and discount timing matter. Verizon also shows a three-year price-lock guarantee on an eligible unlimited prepaid offer, but the guarantee excludes taxes, fees, surcharges, one-time charges, promotions and third-party services. In other words, it does not freeze the entire bill.
Best for: Customers who need Verizon coverage and can qualify for multiline or Auto Pay savings.
Watch for: first-month pricing, premium data, hotspot allowances, loyalty-discount waiting periods and the distinction between Verizon Prepaid and Verizon postpaid.

Check Verizon Prepaid plans and prepaid device deals.
Major-carrier deals: T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon
T-Mobile: strongest starting point for switchers and premium family plans
T-Mobile advertises a $400 virtual prepaid Mastercard for eligible switchers. The offer requires conditions such as porting in a number, activating a qualifying new line, maintaining the required plan and redeeming the reward within the specified period.
T-Mobile is also promoting phone offers that may not require a trade-in on qualifying plans. These can be valuable for a customer who already wants a premium unlimited plan, but the higher recurring service cost can overwhelm a one-time reward or device discount for a BYOD customer.
Before signing up, verify whether the quoted price is for one line or several, whether Auto Pay is required, whether taxes and fees are included, and whether changing plans will cancel device credits.
AT&T Prepaid: best for no-credit-check service and budget devices
AT&T Prepaid offers no annual contract, no credit check and BYOD support. Its indexed plans page advertises family savings of up to $20 per month per line for qualifying accounts and plans.
AT&T’s current indexed prepaid offer includes a free moto g play (2026) with an eligible plan requiring at least a $45 monthly phone plan, plus taxes and restrictions. “Free” here should be read alongside the required service and eligibility terms.
AT&T says many unlocked iPhone and Android phones are compatible, including most unlocked Android and iPhone models newer than iPhone 6, subject to its current compatibility check. Prepaid and postpaid service should not be assumed to have identical priority, roaming, financing or support.
Check AT&T Prepaid and compare prepaid plans.
Verizon: compare postpaid phone deals with prepaid service
Verizon’s postpaid promotions can offer substantial flagship-phone savings, but they commonly require a qualifying plan, new line, port-in, trade-in and monthly bill credits. Verizon Prepaid may be cheaper for service, while postpaid may be better for financing, premium data, roaming or phone promotions.

Phone deals: why “free” often means a 36-month commitment
Most major-carrier flagship promotions work like this:
- The carrier finances the phone.
- Monthly promotional credits offset some or all of the installment payment.
- You must keep the line and an eligible plan for the credit period.
- If you leave early, the remaining device balance may become due and future credits stop.
- Changing to an ineligible plan can also cancel credits.
Never compare a phone’s promotional value without comparing the required service cost and remaining obligation. A more expensive plan may cost hundreds or thousands more over 36 months than a cheaper BYOD plan.
When comparing iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Pixel or budget Android offers, record whether the deal is for a new or existing customer, whether a port-in or trade-in is required, the eligible plan, the credit duration and the consequence of cancellation. Cricket, for example, currently lists add-a-line offers for existing customers including the Galaxy A16 5G and moto g (2026) from $0, and the iPhone 16e from $9.99, subject to eligibility and activation requirements.

Best family-plan approaches
Family pricing can change the winner completely. Never apply a four-line price to a single-line decision.
- Four lines: Normalize the complete monthly total, including Auto Pay, taxes, fees and any required premium tier. Verizon Prepaid advertises four unlimited lines as low as $35 per line after discounts, while T-Mobile and AT&T may offer stronger perks or device promotions at a higher service price.
- Two lines: Check whether the second line unlocks a discount large enough to offset the plan’s extras. Verizon Prepaid advertises two lines at $80 under its stated pricing structure, with first-month and Auto Pay timing differences.
- One line: Compare Mint, US Mobile and Visible first. A major-carrier family plan can be poor value if you do not need its phone financing or included perks.
Ask what happens if one member cancels, whether the account manager remains responsible for device balances, and when multiline discounts begin.
Choose by usage and lifestyle
| Usage or situation | What to prioritize | Likely starting points |
|---|---|---|
| Light data: 1–5GB monthly | Low base price; avoid paying for premium unlimited data. | US Mobile Light or Mint’s lower-data annual plan. |
| Moderate data: 5–20GB | High-speed allowance, congestion priority and hotspot terms. | Mint, US Mobile, Visible or prepaid plans after checking details. |
| Heavy data: 20GB-plus | Premium data, hotspot speed and network management. | Unlimited plans; compare T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and premium alternatives. |
| Frequent hotspot use | Included high-speed hotspot rather than the word “unlimited.” | Premium postpaid or a plan with clearly stated hotspot data. |
| Travel or international calling | Roaming countries, high-speed international data and calling rates. | Premium postpaid plans, after pricing the benefits you actually use. |
| Existing home-internet customer | Bundle eligibility and the price without broadband. | Spectrum Mobile, Xfinity Mobile or an eligible carrier bundle. |
| Cash-flow constrained | Monthly billing and low upfront cost. | Monthly prepaid or postpaid; avoid annual prepayment. |
How to calculate the real cost
Use this formula rather than comparing headline prices:
True first-year cost = service charges + taxes and fees + activation fees + phone payments + required add-ons - guaranteed discounts - guaranteed credits
For a 24- or 36-month phone promotion, calculate the full period. Include insurance, premium perks and the cost of the required plan. If you would otherwise use a $25 service plan but the phone deal requires a $90 plan, the extra $65 per month is part of the phone’s cost.

For a plan switch, use this worksheet:
Current monthly bill
- new monthly bill
+ required phone-plan increase
+ taxes and fees
+ insurance
+ risk of losing remaining device credits
= realistic monthly savings
Also compare the amount due today. Mint’s $15 effective monthly price can be excellent over a year but still require $180 upfront. Verizon Prepaid’s lowest advertised rate may not apply during the first month. Taxes and fees can also make two identical-looking base rates produce different bills.
Coverage, priority and compatibility
National labels such as “best coverage” are not enough. Check the carrier’s coverage map for your home, workplace, school, regular routes and rural destinations. Maps are estimates and do not guarantee indoor performance.
Two brands can use the same underlying network but perform differently during congestion. Compare:
- Premium or priority high-speed data.
- Whether speeds are reduced after a threshold.
- Hotspot data and speed.
- Access to 5G Ultra Wideband or equivalent service.
- Domestic roaming and partner-network access.
- International roaming.
Before switching, confirm that your phone is unlocked, compatible with the new network’s bands and supported for current voice service. eSIM support varies by device and carrier, and older phones may lack current 5G bands or VoLTE support.
How to switch without losing money
- Check coverage at the places you use your phone most.
- Confirm your phone’s compatibility and unlock status.
- Find your remaining device balance and determine whether leaving ends bill credits.
- Read the new promotion’s port-in, trade-in, plan, line-count and redemption requirements.
- Obtain your current carrier’s account number and transfer PIN.
- Open the new account and port your number before canceling the old service.
- Keep the old account active until calls, texts and data work on the new line.
- Submit any required trade-in or prepaid-card redemption on time.
- Test calls, texts, data, voicemail and 5G.
- Review the final old-carrier bill and verify all promised credits or discounts.
Other alternatives worth checking
Metro by T-Mobile
Metro is a relevant alternative for customers who want T-Mobile coverage, prepaid service and physical-store access. Compare its current plan prices, hotspot allowances, device eligibility and port-in rules with Mint and T-Mobile before choosing.
Cricket Wireless
Cricket can suit customers who want AT&T-network prepaid service and retail support. Its current add-a-line page targets existing customers, so do not assume those device prices apply to new lines or BYOD customers.
Spectrum Mobile and Xfinity Mobile
Cable-company mobile can be attractive when you already have qualifying home internet. Without the broadband bundle, the price may be higher or service may be unavailable. Check address eligibility and the mobile price after any introductory broadband period.
Check Spectrum Mobile or Xfinity Mobile.
Bottom line
Start with Mint Mobile if you want the lowest effective annual price and can pay upfront. Choose US Mobile for a low-cost plan with multi-network flexibility, or Visible for straightforward single-line Verizon-network service with taxes included. Consider Verizon Prepaid when Verizon coverage and multiline discounts matter. Choose T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon postpaid primarily when you need their network, perks or device financing—not simply because the phone is advertised as free.
