The Nuclear Company raised a reported $51.3 million Series A in 2025 to develop a fleet of large nuclear reactors—not to build an operating reactor with that money. Led by Eclipse, the round brought the company’s reported total funding to approximately $70 million. Its strategy is to standardize the development and construction of multiple projects, initially targeting a portfolio totaling about 6 gigawatts (GW).
The company is positioning itself as a nuclear-infrastructure developer and project integrator. It plans to use established reactor technology, prioritize sites with existing nuclear infrastructure or licensing work, and apply shared engineering, procurement, construction, and software systems across projects.
What The Nuclear Company raised
The Nuclear Company’s exact Series A amount was not included in its initial April 2025 announcement. TechCrunch later reported that the company raised $51.3 million in the round, commonly rounded to $51 million in headlines.
Eclipse led the financing. The named participants were CIV, Goldcrest Capital, MCJ Collective, True Ventures, and Wonder Ventures. The round brought reported total funding to approximately $70 million, meaning the $70 million figure includes earlier funding; it was not all raised in this Series A.

The financing was intended to support development activities, including the company’s fleet-scale strategy and its engineering and construction organization. It is not remotely the full capital required to construct a 6-GW nuclear fleet.
Status: $51.3 million Series A reported; approximately $70 million in total funding reported; an initial 6-GW fleet target; no cited evidence that a 6-GW fleet was under construction at the time of the financing.
Who is The Nuclear Company?
The Nuclear Company was founded in 2023 by Jonathan Webb, former CEO of AppHarvest; Kiran Bhatraju, CEO of Arcadia; and Patrick Maloney, co-founder of CIV and chairman of The Nuclear Company. The company emerged publicly from stealth in 2024.
It is not primarily presenting itself as a company inventing a new reactor. Instead, it wants to coordinate the development of multiple nuclear projects and make large-reactor deployment more repeatable.

The company’s central thesis is straightforward: rather than treating every nuclear project as a bespoke undertaking, select an established design and reuse as much of the development and construction process as possible.

- Choose repeatable technology. The company has initially emphasized established, licensed reactor technology, including Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.
- Identify suitable sites. It is prioritizing locations with existing nuclear infrastructure, permits, licenses, or prior development work.
- Standardize project work. Engineering documentation, procurement, quality systems, construction methods, and project controls could be reused across multiple sites.
- Build organizational learning. A common team, supplier base, and set of procedures could theoretically reduce the cost of repeating the same work.
This is an execution and business thesis—not proof that the projects will be cheaper, faster, or easier. Nuclear construction has repeatedly shown that a proven reactor design does not automatically produce a predictable project.
What “massive reactor sites” means
The phrase refers to large nuclear-power projects and a multi-site development strategy, not a single small modular reactor campus. The initial ambition is a fleet totaling approximately 6 GW. Depending on the final reactor selection and configuration, that could mean several large reactors, with some candidate sites potentially supporting units exceeding 1 GW each.
The company was evaluating or prioritizing sites with existing permits, licenses, or nuclear infrastructure. That does not mean it had secured a dozen sites or that every candidate was ready for construction. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s overview listed six issued early site permits, while the NRC’s combined-license list identified five licensees holding combined licenses for eight new reactor units. Those national figures are not the same thing as The Nuclear Company’s candidate-site portfolio.
Why use large, established reactors?
Large reactors can supply firm electricity for long periods, making them relevant to utilities, manufacturers, and data centers that need dependable power. The timing is also influenced by expected growth in electricity demand from data centers and artificial intelligence, industrial expansion, electrification, and the retirement of some existing generation.
The Nuclear Company’s approach differs from startups developing novel advanced reactors or small modular reactors. A mature design may reduce technology-development risk, but it does not remove licensing, manufacturing, financing, construction, or operational risk. Westinghouse AP1000 units are operating examples of the technology, including Vogtle Units 3 and 4, but the U.S. AP1000 buildout also illustrated the schedule and cost risks associated with large nuclear projects.

Power demand is not guaranteed to translate into nuclear contracts. Data-center growth, gas prices, renewable and battery costs, grid rules, subsidies, and corporate power-procurement decisions can all change the economics of a project expected to take years to develop.
Existing permits do not mean construction approval
One of the most important distinctions for investors and energy readers is that “an existing permit” can describe very different regulatory positions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Early site permit: addresses the suitability of a site and certain safety, environmental, and emergency-planning issues without necessarily approving a specific reactor or authorizing construction and operation.
- Combined license: combines authorization to construct and, subject to required findings, operate a reactor under the NRC’s licensing framework.
- Construction permit and operating license: the traditional two-step process under Part 50.
- ITAAC: inspections, tests, analyses, and acceptance criteria that must be satisfied before a plant can transition from construction authorization to operation.
The NRC licensing backgrounder, its combined-license explanation, and its ITAAC guidance explain these stages. Reusing a nuclear site or prior licensing work can reduce friction, but it does not eliminate site-specific safety analysis, environmental review, construction oversight, financing, or operational requirements.
The distinction matters especially for the later V.C. Summer discussion. The NRC lists the combined licenses for V.C. Summer Units 2 and 3 as terminated on March 6, 2019; they should not be described as currently valid construction authorizations.
The software strategy: Palantir’s Nuclear Operating System
In June 2025, The Nuclear Company and Palantir announced a partnership to co-develop a Nuclear Operating System, or NOS. The stated purpose is to bring information from construction, supply chains, engineering, workforce management, safety systems, regulatory documentation, and site operations into a more unified platform.

The companies also described AI-supported document review and regulatory validation. If implemented effectively, a shared data system could help project teams find information, track obligations, and coordinate work across a fleet.

The funding can support the relatively early stages of assembling a nuclear-development platform, such as:
- Site screening and technical studies.
- Licensing and regulatory work.
- Engineering and project development.
- Hiring and building the South Carolina engineering and construction office.
- Supplier and technology relationships.
- Software and project-control systems.
- Early commercial discussions with utilities or large power purchasers.
It cannot be treated as the construction budget for a 6-GW fleet. A commercial nuclear program would require vastly more capital for engineering, site work, long-lead components, construction, grid interconnection, fuel supply, financing costs, owner’s costs, contingency, insurance, waste obligations, and eventual decommissioning responsibilities.
The company announced a primary engineering and construction office in Columbia, South Carolina, with more than 100 planned jobs. Building that team may be strategically important, but hiring and development work are different milestones from a final investment decision, a construction contract, or commercial operation.

What investors should watch next
For readers assessing the company’s credibility, the meaningful milestones are not just additional fundraising announcements. They include:
- Named sites and documented control or development rights.
- The regulatory status of each site and reactor proposal.
- Technology-selection decisions and licensing plans.
- Utility, industrial, or data-center power-purchase commitments.
- Nuclear-qualified suppliers and long-lead procurement.
- Construction partners and quality-assurance systems.
- Project-level financing and government support.
- Clear schedules, cost estimates, contingencies, and accountability for delays.
Until those details become public, the 6-GW figure is best understood as a target or development ambition—not secured operating capacity, an awarded construction program, or a completed pipeline.
What changed after the funding round?
The company’s strategy later expanded beyond the original financing story. In June 2025, it announced the Palantir partnership. In May 2026, Brookfield and The Nuclear Company announced a new partnership focused on Westinghouse technology, including potential AP1000 and AP300 projects.
That partnership selected The Nuclear Company as project manager for the potential revival of the partially constructed V.C. Summer project in South Carolina. This is a later development and should not be confused with the purpose or size of the 2025 Series A. The Brookfield relationship suggests a broader project-development and execution role, but it does not mean the original $51.3 million financed construction of those reactors.
The investment case and its risks
Potential advantages
- Established reactor technology rather than the additional uncertainty of inventing a new design.
- Potential reuse of nuclear sites, infrastructure, and prior licensing work.
- Fleet-level procurement and construction learning.
- A single project-management and data architecture across multiple developments.
- Potential demand for dependable, low-carbon electricity from industrial and data-center customers.
Material risks
- Regulatory risk: Existing site work does not guarantee approval of a new project, owner, design, or financing structure.
- Capital risk: Development funding is small relative to the eventual cost of large nuclear construction, creating a need for substantial follow-on capital.
- Schedule and cost risk: Repetition can create learning effects, but large nuclear projects remain vulnerable to delays, redesigns, supply shortages, and labor constraints.
- Site risk: Ownership changes, transmission limits, cooling-water needs, environmental review, unfinished-construction liabilities, and local opposition can complicate site reuse.
- Demand risk: Forecast electricity demand from AI and data centers may change before plants can be completed.
- Execution risk: A software platform may improve coordination but cannot solve physical manufacturing, workforce, regulatory, political, or financing problems by itself.
- Commercial risk: The company still needs credible power purchasers, contracts, financing structures, and partners willing to carry project risk.
For investors, this is therefore an early-stage infrastructure-development story rather than an investment in an operating power producer. The company’s eventual value will depend on whether it can convert targets into licensed, financed, contracted, and operating plants.
