Microsoft’s business was thriving in its latest reported quarter, but the evidence does not show that its political posture caused that success. The company publicly defended some diversity and European cloud-sovereignty positions while remaining deeply connected to government contracts, regulation and national-security interests. Its strongest growth came from Azure, artificial intelligence, Microsoft 365 and long-term enterprise commitments.
That makes the original headline directionally right but incomplete: Microsoft appeared more willing than some rivals to resist particular forms of political pressure, yet “not bowing” is not the same as opposing the Trump administration or operating independently of Washington.
What “hasn’t bowed” actually means
The phrase comes from a May 14, 2025 Computerworld opinion column by Preston Gralla. The column argued that Microsoft had shown less political accommodation than several other large technology companies while continuing to perform strongly. Its comparisons with Meta, Amazon, Google and Apple were the author’s characterization, not a neutral ranking of corporate courage. Read the original column at Computerworld.
A more precise interpretation is relative corporate independence. Microsoft did not appear to retreat from every corporate position in response to political pressure. That does not mean it opposed every administration policy, rejected federal business or refused to negotiate with regulators.

The distinction matters for investors and employees. A company may challenge one government demand, preserve a public principle and still seek government contracts, lobby policymakers and cooperate with national-security agencies elsewhere.
The evidence from 2025
Microsoft continued to support inclusion publicly
Microsoft chief diversity officer Lindsay-Rae McIntyre described diversity and inclusion as important to innovation and business success in December 2024. The 2025 column presented that position as a contrast with companies that rolled back or reframed diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives after Donald Trump returned to office.
That is evidence of a public corporate stance, not proof that every internal program, hiring target, budget or workforce outcome stayed unchanged. Investors should distinguish among a company’s stated principles, formal programs, employee policies and measurable results.
It defended European cloud operations
Microsoft President and Vice Chair Brad Smith reportedly said the company would not suspend European cloud operations or hand over European data simply because of a potential trade dispute. He also said Microsoft would expand European operations and litigate if necessary.
Microsoft’s EU Data Boundary FAQ describes storage and processing commitments for core cloud services, including Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform.
Those commitments are meaningful, but they are not an absolute shield against government access. Data residency concerns where information is stored and processed. They do not automatically prevent a provider from receiving a lawful demand, nor do they eliminate questions about encryption, customer-controlled keys, access procedures and the provider’s ability to challenge that demand.
It changed outside legal counsel
The column reported that Microsoft dropped Simpson Thacher after the firm agreed to provide $125 million in free legal services to the administration. Microsoft then hired Jenner & Block, which sued the administration.
Changing counsel was a politically visible signal, but it should not be overstated. Challenging a specific executive action does not mean severing business or institutional ties with the federal government.

The latest financial evidence supplied for this analysis is Microsoft’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 report, covering the three months ended March 31, 2026. Microsoft released it on April 29, 2026. Because later fiscal fourth-quarter results may have been released after that material was gathered, these figures should be treated as the latest documented results in the supplied evidence, not as a claim about every subsequent quarter.
| Measure | Fiscal Q3 2026 | Year over year |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $82.9 billion | Up 18% |
| Operating income | $38.4 billion | Up 20% |
| GAAP net income | $31.8 billion | Up 23% |
| Microsoft Cloud revenue | $54.5 billion | Up 29% |
| Azure and other cloud services | Not separately disclosed in dollars | Up 40% |
| AI annual revenue run rate | More than $37 billion | Up 123% |
| Commercial remaining performance obligation | $627 billion | Up 99% |
Microsoft’s fiscal Q3 2026 earnings release is the source for these figures.
The strength was concentrated rather than universal. Intelligent Cloud revenue reached $34.7 billion, up 30%, while Productivity and Business Processes revenue was $35.0 billion, up 17%. More Personal Computing revenue was $13.2 billion, down 1%.

Within the product groups, Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue rose 19%, Dynamics 365 rose 22% and LinkedIn rose 12%. Xbox content and services fell 5%, while Windows OEM and Devices fell 2%. “Thriving” therefore describes the company’s overall financial position and its cloud-and-AI engine, not every business line.
What is driving the growth?
Azure demand
Azure and other cloud services grew 40% year over year. Microsoft management said demand exceeded available capacity across workloads, customer groups and regions. Cloud infrastructure is the central commercial engine behind the company’s current expansion.
AI infrastructure and services
Microsoft said its AI business exceeded a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, up 123% year over year. A run rate is an annualized measure based on current performance; it is not the same as reported annual revenue for a separately disclosed AI segment.
Microsoft also reported more than 20 million paid Microsoft 365 commercial Copilot seats. That demonstrates distribution and customer adoption, but seat growth alone does not prove that Copilot is producing durable productivity gains or attractive long-term margins.
Enterprise distribution
Microsoft’s advantage is not just its data-center capacity. Azure, Microsoft 365, Teams, identity, security and business applications are connected through existing enterprise relationships. Large customers may be reluctant to move mission-critical workloads when migration is expensive, disruptive or difficult to justify to procurement and compliance teams.

It may also give the company more room to disagree with a government on a particular issue than a business whose revenue depends more heavily on regulatory relief, consumer attention or a single platform.
Contracted future demand
Commercial remaining performance obligation reached $627 billion. This represents contracted future performance obligations, not cash already collected, recognized current-period revenue or guaranteed profit. Nevertheless, it offers substantial visibility into future enterprise demand.
Did political independence cause the success?
There is no evidence in the supplied sources that Microsoft’s political posture directly caused its growth. The results show that public resistance and commercial expansion occurred at the same time. They do not establish a causal link.
The more convincing explanation is the AI-and-cloud investment cycle, combined with Microsoft’s enterprise distribution, recurring subscriptions, hybrid-cloud capabilities and long-term contracts. Microsoft’s public positions may help it appear trustworthy to some employees, customers and European policymakers, but the financial data cannot isolate that effect.

A company can be commercially successful while taking a position an investor admires, but that does not make the position the investment thesis. Microsoft’s operating thesis rests more directly on cloud growth, AI monetization, enterprise software and the economics of the infrastructure required to deliver them.
Why the story is more complicated
Independent from Trump does not mean independent from Washington
Microsoft remains deeply involved with government customers and public-sector technology. It can sell cloud, productivity, cybersecurity and AI products to federal agencies while contesting a particular executive action in court. That is not necessarily hypocrisy; large technology companies often separate commercial relationships from legal disputes. But it does complicate a simple resistance narrative.

The harder accountability questions include how Microsoft handles military and intelligence use, AI safeguards for government customers, law-enforcement demands and transparency around data access. The supplied evidence does not verify current answers to each question, so they should not be treated as resolved by the company’s European data commitments.
European sovereignty is both principle and strategy
Microsoft’s European data commitments can reflect corporate values, customer demand, regulation and competitive positioning at the same time. European governments and businesses want greater control over data, operations and critical infrastructure. Demonstrating that Microsoft can meet those expectations is commercially valuable as well as politically significant.
That does not make the commitment insincere. It means the decision should not be reduced to ideology. Trust and sovereignty are products Microsoft must sell to retain customers in a strategically important market.
The comparison with other technology companies is selective
Meta, Amazon, Google and Apple face different products, legal disputes, regulatory exposures and revenue mixes. A CEO’s public behavior may also be shaped by different negotiations with the administration. The 2025 column’s comparison is useful context, but it is not enough to conclude that Microsoft is uniquely principled or that its rivals uniformly surrendered their independence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The cost of the AI boom
Microsoft’s growth should not be confused with effortless profitability. Microsoft Cloud gross margin was approximately 66% in fiscal Q3 2026 and remained pressured by AI infrastructure investment and increasing AI-product usage. Microsoft made a similar margin point in its fiscal Q2 results.
AI requires expensive data centers, chips, electricity, networking and model capacity. Microsoft may grow revenue rapidly while spending heavily to make that growth possible. The key financial question is whether AI demand eventually produces returns that exceed those infrastructure costs.

Commercial remaining performance obligations and Copilot seats improve visibility, but neither measure answers that question by itself. Contracts can carry different margins, and paid seats can be underused or fail to justify renewal prices. Investors should watch cloud gross margins, capital expenditure, capacity utilization, pricing power and evidence that customers are expanding AI workloads profitably.
What could weaken the thesis?
- Political accommodation: Microsoft’s position could change as government pressure, procurement incentives or national-security demands evolve.
- Cloud and AI regulation: Antitrust and competition scrutiny could affect bundling, distribution and cloud practices. The supplied research does not verify the current status of federal investigations.
- Margin compression: Infrastructure and usage costs could rise faster than AI revenue or pricing.
- Capacity constraints: Demand exceeding available capacity is good for demand but can limit near-term sales and require enormous capital investment.
- European trust disputes: Data-boundary promises may not satisfy customers that require stronger control over legal access, encryption or operational sovereignty.
- Adoption risk: Copilot growth may not translate into lasting productivity improvements or renewals.
- Accounting complexity: Microsoft’s non-GAAP results exclude the impact of investments in OpenAI, so operating performance should be distinguished from investment-accounting effects.
What this means for investors and enterprise buyers
For investors, Microsoft’s latest documented results support the word “thriving,” particularly in cloud and AI. They do not support the stronger claim that resisting Trump made the company successful. A disciplined analysis should separate admiration for corporate conduct from expectations about revenue, margins, capital spending and competitive risk.
For enterprise buyers, the political story translates into practical questions:
- Where will data be stored and processed?
- What legal demands can reach the provider, and what customer-controlled encryption options exist?
- Can workloads remain hybrid or move across regions if policy changes?
- Are Copilot permissions, data classification and governance mature enough for deployment?
- Will consumption-based Azure costs be monitored by a capable FinOps or cloud-governance team?
- Does consolidating security and productivity tools reduce complexity, or merely move it into a larger vendor relationship?
Microsoft provides information on Azure data residency, Azure Arc, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft security pricing. Actual costs and suitability depend on region, workload, licensing and governance.
