Here’s how much the iPhone 16 series cost at Canadian carriers at launch

Here are the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, Pro and Pro Max launch prices at Canadian carriers—and how to compare the real cost beyond the advertised monthly payment.

Important date note: The prices below are Canadian launch-period figures published for iPhone 16 pre-orders on September 13, 2024. The phones went on sale September 20, 2024. They are not a live August 2026 carrier-deal guide; carrier pricing, plans, fees and inventory must be rechecked before buying.

Carrier advertisements often show a low monthly device payment, but that figure may depend on a return program, a specific wireless plan, a trade-in or a deferred balance. The meaningful comparison is the total cost over the period you expect to keep the phone.

Apple’s Canadian launch prices

Apple’s launch starting prices were $1,129 for the iPhone 16 and $1,279 for the iPhone 16 Plus. The reported launch baselines for the Pro models were $1,449 for the iPhone 16 Pro and $1,749 for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Model Starting storage Launch price Approximate 24-month split
iPhone 16 128GB $1,129 $47.04/month
iPhone 16 Plus 128GB $1,279 $53.29/month
iPhone 16 Pro 128GB $1,449 $60.38/month
iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB $1,749 $72.88/month

Apple officially announced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus prices and confirmed September 20 availability in Canada. Pre-orders opened September 13, and iOS 18 became available September 16. The Pro and Pro Max figures above are the launch baselines reported in the carrier comparison, not current Apple pricing. Apple’s launch announcement provides the official details for the standard models.

  • 8GB RAM, Apple A18 6-core CPU (2 performance + 4 efficiency cores), Apple GPU 4-core, 16‑core Neural Engine
  • Rear camera: 48MP, f/1.6, wide, Front Camera: 12MP, f/1.9, wide, iOS 18.3.1, upgradable to iOS 18.5
  • Connectivity: Global 4G LTE, Sub-6 GHz 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C, Wireless Charging (7.5W). (does not have mmWave 5G or MagSafe or physical SIM card) - Dual eSIM Only
  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.

The Pro Max starts at 256GB, while the other models start at 128GB. That storage difference is one reason its price cannot be compared with a 128GB iPhone 16 on a simple monthly-payment basis. Higher-capacity versions cost more at both Apple and most carriers.

Launch-period carrier pricing

The following table reproduces the September 2024 launch comparison. Monthly figures are device payments, not the total monthly cost of owning a phone and maintaining wireless service. A “return” or “take-back” label means the advertised payment may defer part of the phone’s price until the end of the term.

Source and date: MobileSyrup’s September 13, 2024 launch coverage. The source page is currently unavailable, so these figures should be treated as archived launch reporting rather than current carrier prices.

*Telus anomaly: The source lists $1,610 as the iPhone 16 outright price. That conflicts with Apple’s $1,129 launch price and the $1,161 figures listed for Rogers and Bell, so it appears to be a transcription or publication error. Do not use $1,610 as a confirmed Telus price without independent verification.

The source also did not provide complete outright-price information for Koodo or SaskTel. That missing information means their monthly figures cannot be converted into a complete keep-the-phone comparison from this table alone.

Which carrier had the lowest advertised payment?

On the launch table, SaskTel showed the lowest iPhone 16 payment at $26.25 per month. Videotron was next at $28.75 and Freedom at $29. For the iPhone 16 Plus, SaskTel showed $32.50, while Freedom and Videotron showed $33.

For the iPhone 16 Pro, Freedom and Videotron were tied at $38 per month. For the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Freedom showed $46, followed by Videotron at $46.75 and Eastlink at $47.33.

These are only advertised device payments. They do not establish the cheapest overall deal. A carrier with a lower phone payment may require a more expensive plan, a return obligation or a larger final payment.

Why the monthly payment can be misleading

Return-style financing defers part of the price

Programs such as Rogers Save & Return, Telus Bring-It-Back, Bell Device Return Option, Freedom TradeUp, Videotron Take-Back and Eastlink easyTab Flex use broadly similar mechanics, although their exact contracts differ:

  1. The carrier advertises a lower monthly device payment.
  2. Part of the phone’s price is deferred until the end of the financing period.
  3. At the end, you generally either return the phone in the required condition or pay the deferred amount to keep it.

The reduced payment is therefore not automatically a free discount. If the phone is damaged, missing required components, unpaid or otherwise outside the carrier’s acceptable-return conditions, you may have to pay the deferred amount. Read the specific agreement rather than assuming every program has the same inspection rules.

$0 down does not mean low total cost

$0 down only describes the initial device payment. Your actual cost can also include the monthly device financing, the wireless plan, connection or activation fees, taxes, a deferred balance, and the loss of promotional credits if you change or cancel service.

At launch, the source noted a $70 connection fee for Rogers, Telus, Koodo and Fido. That was a historical observation, not a universal current fee. Fees vary by carrier, channel, province and promotion.

Trade-in credits have conditions

A trade-in can reduce the bill, but the quoted value may depend on model, storage, condition and inspection. Separate bill credits may also require a particular plan or continued service. Treat only clearly guaranteed credits as part of your calculation, and confirm what happens if you change plans.

What each named program means

  • Rogers Save & Return: The launch payment was reduced in exchange for a return-or-pay structure.
  • Telus Bring-It-Back: The advertised payment included a deferred amount that generally had to be settled or satisfied by returning the phone under Telus’s conditions.
  • Bell Device Return Option: Bell’s launch pricing used a similar return-or-keep arrangement.
  • Freedom TradeUp: Freedom advertised reduced payments through a trade-up structure. The source also reported a conditional Apple Watch Series 10 promotion requiring a $65 plan and a $10 monthly Apple Watch data add-on; it was not a cost-free watch.
  • Videotron Take-Back: The lower payment depended on returning the device or paying the applicable deferred amount.
  • Eastlink easyTab Flex: Eastlink showed reduced payments through its flexible return-style option.
  • Koodo Tab Plus: Koodo’s table showed substantial down payments on some models and $33 monthly payments across the range, but did not provide complete outright-price data.
  • SaskTel Plus Pricing: SaskTel showed $0 down launch payments, but the table did not provide complete outright prices.

Program names, eligibility, return amounts and plan requirements can change. Before signing, ask for the exact end-of-term amount and the written acceptable-condition requirements.

How to calculate the real 24-month cost

If you keep the phone

24 monthly device payments
+ upfront device payment
+ deferred balance or buyout
+ activation or connection fee
+ taxes
− guaranteed bill credits
− eligible trade-in credit
= device acquisition cost

If you return the phone

24 monthly device payments
+ upfront device payment
+ activation or connection fee
+ taxes
− guaranteed bill credits
= cost of using the phone for the term

Then calculate the service cost separately:

device cost
+ 24 × monthly wireless-plan price
= approximate two-year cost before taxes and optional services

For an illustration, suppose a phone costs $35 per month for 24 months, has no down payment, requires a $70 connection fee and is paired with a $65 monthly plan. Before tax, returning the phone would cost $840 in device payments plus $70 in fees, or $910. Adding 24 months of service brings the combined total to $2,470. Keeping the phone would require adding the contract’s deferred balance. This example is hypothetical and does not represent a current carrier offer.

Use the same model, storage capacity, financing term, plan allowance, tax treatment, connection fee, credits and ownership outcome when comparing carriers. Otherwise, the lowest monthly figure may simply be the least comparable one.

  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

What happens if you leave early?

Do not assume porting your number ends the device obligation. Before switching carriers, verify:

  • the remaining device balance;
  • the deferred return amount;
  • whether promotional bill credits stop;
  • whether the phone must be returned immediately;
  • whether the outstanding balance must be paid before the account closes; and
  • whether financing can be transferred to another account.

These terms vary by carrier and contract. A return program that works well for a planned two-year upgrade may be inconvenient for someone who expects to move, change plans or sell the phone early.

Carrier or Apple: which is better?

A carrier may suit you if:

  • you want the device payment on your monthly bill;
  • you already want the required plan;
  • a current trade-in promotion materially reduces the total cost;
  • you prefer upgrading about every two years; and
  • you can keep the phone in returnable condition.

Buying unlocked from Apple may suit you if:

  • you want to change carriers freely;
  • you plan to keep the phone for four years or longer;
  • you want no carrier-specific return obligation;
  • you want to compare wireless plans independently; or
  • you prefer a clear device price.

Apple says an unconnected iPhone bought from Apple is unlocked and is not tied to one network provider or a multi-year service contract. Apple’s Canadian shop now promotes newer iPhone models, while its general shop has displayed the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus from $999. Apple Certified Refurbished listings have also shown a 128GB iPhone 16 at $849, with a one-year limited warranty, new battery and outer shell, and limited supplies. These are current retail signals, not carrier-price comparisons, so check the live listings before relying on them.

For a refurbished or new Apple purchase, see Apple’s iPhone 16 buying page and Apple Certified Refurbished inventory.

Choosing by shopper type

  • Lowest advertised device payment: Start with regional carriers and return-style offers, then add the plan and final obligation.
  • Broad national availability: Rogers, Bell and Telus may be the most practical starting points, subject to your location and plan needs.
  • Lower-cost network alternative: Fido, Koodo, Virgin Plus or Freedom may fit, but coverage, roaming and eligibility vary by province and travel pattern.
  • Long-term owner: Standard financing or an unlocked Apple purchase is usually easier to evaluate than a return program.
  • Frequent upgrader: A return-style offer can make sense if you already want its required plan and will meet the return conditions.
  • Frequent traveller or carrier-switcher: An unlocked purchase avoids being tied to a carrier-specific financing arrangement.

Bottom line

The launch table makes SaskTel, Freedom and Videotron look attractive on monthly device payments, but no carrier can be called cheapest without the wireless plan, taxes, fees, credits and end-of-term obligation. Compare the same phone and storage under the same ownership scenario. If you will keep the iPhone beyond two years or may switch carriers, an unlocked Apple purchase is often the clearer financial comparison; if you upgrade regularly and already want the required plan, a return-style offer may be reasonable.
