It was not a current sale or a blanket $150 discount: eligible buyers received a $150 Apple Gift Card with certain Macs and a $100 gift card with Mac mini and specified iPads, on top of Apple’s education pricing.
This promotion has expired. The details below explain how the offer worked, who qualified, and whether the store-credit structure represented a worthwhile saving.

What Apple offered in 2024
The promotion was available through Apple’s U.S. Education Store and Apple retail locations. Qualified purchasers first received Apple’s standard education price on an eligible device, then received a promotional Apple Gift Card based on the product category.

It was not simply $150 off
The headline value combined two different benefits:
- Immediate education pricing: the qualifying Mac or iPad was sold at Apple’s education price.
- Deferred Apple spending: Apple provided a promotional gift card for a future purchase.
Coverage at the time described education pricing on many Macs and iPads as roughly 5% to 10% below standard pricing, although the exact saving varied by model and configuration. The gift card was not unrestricted cash. Its practical value depended on whether the buyer planned to spend more within Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple Gift Cards can generally be used in the United States for Apple hardware and accessories, apps, games, media, subscriptions, and services such as iCloud+. Apple’s gift-card guidance explains the available redemption channels.

Who qualified?
Apple’s U.S. education rules covered more than currently enrolled college students. Eligible groups included:

- Parents purchasing on behalf of an eligible higher-education student
- Faculty and staff of higher-education institutions
- Employees of public or private K–12 institutions, including homeschool teachers
- Serving school board members
- Serving elected or appointed PTA or PTO officers
These were individual education purchases, not a route for institutional procurement. Apple’s education sales policies exclude institutional, business, enterprise, government, nonprofit, and reseller purchases from the individual education program. Apple also reserves the right to audit purchases and seek the price difference if the terms were violated.
Important limitations and checkout details
Verify the exact model
Not every Mac or iPad qualified. In particular, Mac mini was in the $100 tier, not the $150 tier, and the iPad benefit applied to the M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air lines identified in the offer. A buyer should confirm that the exact configuration is marked as eligible before paying.

The card was restricted to Apple
A buyer who had no plans for Apple accessories, apps, subscriptions, storage, or another Apple device might not realize the full face value of the card. A direct discount from another retailer could be more useful than Apple store credit, even if its advertised dollar amount appeared smaller.
Financing could change how the benefit appeared
Payment method affected the checkout presentation. Some buyers using Apple Card Monthly Installments reported seeing the promotional value as an immediate credit rather than receiving a separately usable card. That behavior should not be assumed for every financing option. Before submitting an order, check whether the gift card is issued separately, how the promotional value is applied, and how taxes, shipping, and financing are treated.
Returns could require returning the gift card
Apple’s promotion terms stated that both the eligible product and promotional product had to be returned for a full refund. If the gift card had been redeemed, was missing, or was not returned, Apple could deduct its original value from the refund or exchange value. This matters if the device is being purchased on a trial basis or if a new product is expected soon.

Resale was not permitted
The education promotion was intended for personal qualifying purchases. Buying devices for resale, an institution, or an unrelated business could violate Apple’s terms.
Was the promotion a good deal?
For a qualified buyer who already intended to purchase an eligible Mac or iPad and expected to spend more with Apple, the offer could be attractive. The effective value was the education-price reduction plus the portion of the gift card the buyer would realistically use.
It was less compelling when:
- The buyer needed the lowest possible upfront price rather than future store credit
- A competing retailer offered a larger direct discount
- The buyer did not expect to buy Apple accessories or services
- The required configuration or accessories made the total cost substantially higher
- The device was near the end of its product cycle
Mac or iPad: compare the complete cost
The gift-card amount should not decide the device category by itself. A Mac is generally the safer choice for macOS-only university software, conventional file management, development, and heavier multitasking. An iPad may be preferable for portability, handwriting, reading, and tablet-based coursework, but the total price may rise after adding a keyboard, Apple Pencil, case, and sufficient storage.

Before buying, check the school or department’s software requirements. Engineering, video, design, and development students should also verify memory, storage, operating-system compatibility, and whether the base configuration is adequate.
How to evaluate the real value
- Record the Apple Education Store price for the exact configuration.
- Subtract only the portion of the gift card you expect to use.
- Add necessary accessories, AppleCare+, taxes, and shipping.
- Compare that total with direct prices from authorized resellers, major electronics retailers, Apple’s refurbished store, or a campus purchasing program.
- Compare warranty coverage, return rules, financing, and delivery—not just the advertised discount.
That calculation treats the gift card correctly: as deferred Apple spending rather than an automatic cash rebate.
Promotion status today
Apple’s 2024 U.S. offer ended on September 30, 2024. Apple’s current U.S. Education Store and later promotion terms should not be used to imply that the 2024 gift-card offer remains available. The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple’s 2024 promotion offered up to $150 in restricted Apple Gift Card value, in addition to education pricing, for qualifying U.S. purchasers. It was potentially worthwhile for buyers who already planned to spend more with Apple—but it was not the same as receiving $150 in cash, and the offer is no longer active.
