Norton Antivirus PayPal Scam: How to Spot It, Avoid It, and Recover Safely

The common Norton PayPal renewal message is a refund and tech-support scam. Here is how to verify your account independently and what to do if you clicked, paid, or granted remote access.

The common “Norton antivirus PayPal” message is usually a refund or tech-support phishing scam—not proof that Norton charged you. It typically claims that a costly Norton subscription was renewed, then tells you to call a phone number to cancel or get a refund. Do not call, click, reply, open attachments, share a verification code, or grant remote access. Verify everything independently inside PayPal, Norton, and your bank or card account.

How the Norton–PayPal scam works

The scam begins with an alarming message claiming that Norton Antivirus, Norton 360, or another Norton product was purchased or renewed through PayPal. The message may arrive as an email, text, browser pop-up, calendar invitation, shopping-app notification, invoice attachment, or PayPal invoice or money request.

A typical fictional example might say: “Your Norton subscription has been renewed for $399.99. Call within 24 hours to cancel and receive a refund.” The large amount and urgent deadline are designed to make you act before checking your accounts.

The supplied phone number connects you to a scammer impersonating Norton, PayPal, or a billing department. The scammer may ask for card or bank details, your PayPal password, a one-time security code, or permission to install software such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer. They may then display a fake account balance, claim that they refunded too much, and demand repayment by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or payment app.

The FTC warns that remote access can allow scammers to install malware, access files, steal credentials, or sell unnecessary services.

Can a PayPal invoice itself be fake?

Yes. A scammer can abuse PayPal’s legitimate invoice or money-request system. The notification may genuinely have been delivered by PayPal, but that does not prove that Norton created the invoice or that the request is accurate.

An invoice or money request is not the same as a completed payment. Distinguish among:

  • Invoice or money request: a demand for you to send money.
  • Pending payment: a transaction that may not yet be completed.
  • Completed payment: money has left a PayPal balance or funding source.
  • Automatic payment: a recurring authorization that may have been set up previously.
  • Unauthorized activity: a transaction you did not approve.

PayPal advises users not to pay unfamiliar invoices or money requests. Report suspicious PayPal emails or websites to [email protected].

How to check whether PayPal actually charged you

  1. Do not use the message’s links, QR code, phone number, or attachment.
  2. Open the PayPal app, or type PayPal’s known website address into your browser yourself.
  3. Open Activity and search for a matching amount, date, merchant, and status.
  4. Review automatic payments or subscriptions under Settings > Payments. The label may appear as Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments, depending on the account or app version.
  5. Sign in separately to your official Norton account and review subscriptions and billing.
  6. Check your bank and credit-card accounts independently.

An unfamiliar PayPal charge can sometimes be a legitimate automatic payment or an authorized payment made by another household member, so verify those possibilities before reporting it as unauthorized. PayPal’s current help guidance explains how to review activity and report unauthorized transactions.

Red flags that the message is a scam

  • You never purchased Norton or do not recognize the alleged renewal.
  • The message creates urgency or threatens account closure, legal action, or immediate loss.
  • It tells you to call a number included in the message.
  • It requests a password, PIN, one-time code, card number, or bank details.
  • It asks you to install remote-access software or let someone “check” your computer.
  • It demands gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or a payment-app transfer.
  • It includes an unexpected attachment or a lookalike web domain.
  • The alleged charge does not appear in PayPal Activity or your bank or card account.
  • It uses a Norton logo, polished formatting, or a familiar-looking invoice number as its main proof.

Norton specifically warns about fake renewal notices containing invoices and callback numbers. Norton also says it does not send calendar invitations related to billing or payment. See Norton’s scam guidance.

What to do if you only received the message

  1. Do not call, click, reply, pay, or open the attachment.
  2. Save a screenshot or the original message if you may need evidence. Forward suspicious Norton email as an attachment to [email protected].
  3. Forward suspicious PayPal messages to [email protected].
  4. Report the fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If money was lost or an internet crime was attempted, consider reporting it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
  5. Block the sender or phone number, then delete the message.

If you clicked a link or downloaded a file

Close the page and do not download or run anything else. Update your operating system, browser, and security software, then run a full scan. Review your downloads and remove unexpected files. Check PayPal, email, bank, and card accounts for suspicious activity.

If you entered a password—even if the page did not appear to submit it—change that password from a trusted device. A security scan cannot undo a stolen password or account change.

If you shared information or allowed remote access

You gave a password

Using a clean device, change the exposed password immediately and change it anywhere else you reused it. Secure your email account first if it can reset other accounts. Enable multifactor authentication, review recovery addresses and phone numbers, check active sessions, and look for suspicious email-forwarding rules. Review PayPal activity and contact PayPal through its official Help or Resolution Center.

You gave a card or bank-account number

Call the institution using the number on the back of your card or an official statement. Explain that the information was disclosed to a scammer. Ask whether the account or card should be blocked or replaced, whether an ACH block or stop payment is appropriate, and how to monitor pending transactions.

You gave a PayPal security code

Treat the account as potentially compromised. Change your PayPal and email passwords, sign out of other sessions where possible, review recent activity and automatic payments, and contact PayPal through an official channel. Never give a second code to someone claiming to reverse the first disclosure.

You allowed AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or another remote-access tool

  1. Disconnect the computer from the internet by disabling Wi-Fi or unplugging Ethernet.
  2. From a separate clean device, change email, PayPal, banking, and other important passwords.
  3. Contact your bank, card issuer, and PayPal.
  4. Uninstall the remote-access program, but do not assume that removal proves the device is clean.
  5. Check for new programs, browser extensions, startup items, and changed security settings.
  6. Run a full malware scan after reconnecting safely.
  7. Consider professional help or a full operating-system reset if the scammer had extensive access.

Preserve evidence before resetting the computer if you may need it for a financial or law-enforcement report.

If money was paid

Act quickly, but describe the transaction accurately. An unauthorized transaction is different from a payment you personally sent after being deceived.

  • For an unauthorized PayPal transaction, go to Resolution Center > Report a problem, select the payment, choose Continue, select I want to report unauthorized activity, and follow the instructions. Labels can vary by account type or app version.
  • Contact the bank or card issuer that funded the payment and ask about reversal or chargeback options.
  • If you used a gift card, contact the gift-card company immediately with the card number and receipt.
  • Contact the wire-transfer service, cryptocurrency provider, or payment-app company involved.
  • Keep invoices, receipts, screenshots, transaction IDs, phone numbers, emails, and chat logs.

PayPal says it will investigate an unauthorized-transaction report and send an email within 10 days, but eligibility, deadlines, and recovery outcomes depend on the transaction type and circumstances. PayPal cannot guarantee reversal of every payment, particularly a payment voluntarily sent to a scammer or made outside PayPal.

Do not pay anyone who promises to recover your money for an upfront fee. Recovery scammers often target people who have already reported a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Norton charge a PayPal account?

A genuine Norton subscription may use an available payment method, but the message itself is not proof. Verify the charge in PayPal Activity, automatic payments, your Norton account, and your bank or card account.

Should I cancel my Norton subscription?

Not because of an unsolicited scam message. Check your Norton account first. If you want to cancel a genuine subscription, use Norton’s official account or support channel.

What if I called the number but shared nothing?

End the call, block the number, preserve the message, and watch for follow-up calls or texts. Caller ID and search results are not proof that a support number is genuine.

How do I know whether my computer is infected?

A full scan may identify malware, but it cannot prove that credentials were not copied or settings were not changed. After remote access, secure accounts from a clean device and consider professional assessment or a reset.
