Best Smartphones Under $400: April 2025 Buying Guide

The Samsung Galaxy A36 5G is the best overall unlocked phone under $400 in April 2025. Compare it with Motorola’s stylus and battery-focused alternatives, plus the Pixel 9a if you can stretch.

Best overall: the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G. It offers the most balanced combination of display quality, cameras, durability, 5G, and long software support at its $399.99 unlocked U.S. MSRP.

If you need more hardware features, choose the Motorola Moto G Stylus 2025. If you want to spend closer to $300, the Moto G Power 2025 is the practical battery-and-durability choice. The Google Pixel 9a has the best camera and software outlook, but its $499 launch price puts it outside a strict $400 budget.

How we define “under $400”

This April 2025 guide ranks new, unlocked phones available in the U.S. by their credible purchase price before tax, activation fees, accessories, financing, trade-in credits, and required service. A carrier bill-credit promotion is not the same as paying less than $400 for the phone.

Prices and availability can change. The figures below are April 2025 U.S. MSRP or observed price points, not a guarantee of current stock or a future sale price.

1. Samsung Galaxy A36 5G: best overall

The Galaxy A36 5G is the safest all-around recommendation for a U.S. buyer with a firm $400 ceiling. Samsung’s March 2025 U.S. MSRP file listed the unlocked 128GB model at $399.99 (Samsung MSRP list).

Its strongest advantages are a 6.7-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED display, a 5,000 mAh battery, 5G, IP-rated protection, and a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization alongside ultrawide and macro cameras. The most important long-term advantage is Samsung’s promise of six years of operating-system and security updates for this model—a notably strong commitment in this price class.

That combination makes it the best choice for someone who wants to keep a phone for several years, values a high-contrast display, or already uses Samsung devices. Performance is suitable for everyday apps, streaming, navigation, photography, and casual games, but it is not a performance-focused phone.

What you give up

  • No microSD card slot, so choose the storage capacity carefully.
  • No telephoto camera; the macro camera is useful only in limited situations.
  • No built-in stylus, headphone jack, or wireless charging.
  • The processor is adequate, not a reason to buy this phone for demanding gaming.

Buy it if: you want the most balanced and least complicated recommendation under $400.

2. Motorola Moto G Stylus 2025: best for useful features

The Moto G Stylus 2025 costs $399.99 at MSRP and is the better choice when specific hardware features matter more than the longest update policy. It includes a built-in stylus, a large 6.7-inch 3K 120Hz pOLED display, IP68-rated water and dust resistance, wireless charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD expansion, and a 5,000 mAh battery. Independent coverage from Android Authority and Android Central highlights its feature-rich positioning.

The stylus is useful for handwritten notes, markup, quick edits, and signing documents. Expandable storage is valuable for people who keep downloaded video, music, photos, or large files. Wireless charging and the headphone jack are uncommon conveniences at this price.

It is a particularly good fit for students and media-heavy users who want a large, sharp screen. Its Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 platform is more appropriate for casual and moderate gaming than the cheaper Moto G Power, although a 120Hz display does not guarantee high game frame rates.

What you give up

  • Motorola’s update commitment is materially shorter than Samsung’s six-year policy.
  • Camera processing is less consistently strong than Google’s and Samsung’s.
  • The hardware feature list does not automatically make it better for long-term ownership than the Galaxy A36.

Buy it if: you need a stylus, microSD, a headphone jack, wireless charging, or the sharpest large display among these strict-budget choices.

  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, Total Wireless, other CDMA carriers, it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. 3. Motorola Moto G Power 2025: best cheaper battery and durability value

At a $299.99 U.S. MSRP, the Moto G Power 2025 is the rational choice for buyers who do not need to spend the full $400. Motorola lists Android 15, a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, a 5,000 mAh battery, 30W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, 128GB of internal storage, a headphone jack, and microSD expansion up to 1TB. Its ruggedized design adds practical appeal for outdoor use or accident-prone owners.

The lower-power platform and large battery make it a strong endurance candidate, but battery capacity alone does not prove longer real-world battery life. Screen brightness, refresh rate, cellular signal, standby behavior, and usage all matter.

This is a value and endurance recommendation—not the best phone for photography, demanding games, premium display quality, or the longest useful software lifespan. Its cameras and performance are lower-end compared with the Galaxy A36 and Moto G Stylus.

Buy it if: you want to spend around $300, need expandable storage, and care more about battery and ruggedness than camera quality.

  • 64GB built-in storage. Get plenty of room for photos, movies, songs, and apps. Made for US

4. CMF Phone 1: best low-cost enthusiast alternative

The CMF Phone 1 can be compelling because of its low price, AMOLED display, competitive performance, modular back-panel design, and potential microSD support. It is a particularly interesting option for buyers outside the mainstream Samsung-Motorola choices.

For a U.S. buyer, however, it should remain a compatibility-dependent recommendation rather than the default pick. Confirm the exact model number, LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE or HD Voice support, NFC availability, warranty provider, and return policy before buying. A phone being labeled “5G” does not mean it works equally well on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or every MVNO.

Imported or region-specific versions may have weaker band coverage, uncertain carrier certification, or no straightforward U.S. warranty route. Verify the specific configuration rather than relying on a listing’s generic specification sheet. See the broader value context from Tom’s Guide and PhoneArena.

Buy it if: you understand the compatibility checks and have confirmed official support for your carrier and region.

What about the Google Pixel 9a?

The Pixel 9a is the best camera-and-software stretch option, not a strict under-$400 winner. Google launched it at $499. It uses the Tensor G4 platform, has a compact 6.3-inch form factor, and Google promised seven years of updates. Reviews such as Ars Technica’s describe it as a particularly strong general-purpose phone.

Its image processing is likely to outperform the strict-budget phones, especially when lighting is difficult. But do not count a trade-in value, activation-required discount, or monthly carrier credit as an unlocked $400 purchase price. Consider the Pixel 9a only if its unlocked price falls below $400 in a genuine sale or if you are willing to stretch the budget.

Category winners

  • Best overall: Samsung Galaxy A36 5G, because its display, camera system, durability, 5G, and six-year support balance each other well.
  • Best camera: Google Pixel 9a if you can stretch; among strict-budget choices, the Galaxy A36 is the safer general camera pick. Megapixel counts do not determine image quality.
  • Best display: Galaxy A36 for Super AMOLED contrast, or Moto G Stylus for its larger high-resolution pOLED panel.
  • Best battery value: Moto G Power 2025, based on its $299.99 price, 5,000 mAh battery, and lower-power platform. This is not a claim of a universal battery-test victory.
  • Best for gaming: Galaxy A36 or Moto G Stylus for casual and moderate gaming. None should be marketed as a dedicated gaming phone.
  • Best for students: Moto G Stylus 2025 for note-taking, display size, storage, and battery.
  • Best for expandable storage: Moto G Power or Moto G Stylus. A microSD card is slower than internal storage and may not expand every app or recording function.
  • Best long-term value: Galaxy A36 under $400; Pixel 9a if the budget can reach $500.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the price type. Separate unlocked MSRP, unlocked sale price, carrier pricing, financing, trade-in value, and bill credits.
  2. Confirm that it is factory unlocked. “Network unlocked after payoff” is different from an unlocked retail model.
  3. Check the exact model number. Carrier variants can differ in bands, storage, preinstalled software, bootloader policies, and update timing.
  4. Verify carrier compatibility. Check LTE bands, 5G bands, VoLTE or HD Voice certification, eSIM support if needed, and blacklist status.
  5. Choose enough storage. A 128GB phone may be adequate for light users but restrictive for extensive video, games, or offline media.
  6. Check what is in the box. Charger inclusion varies. Budget for a USB-C charger, case, screen protector, stylus accessories, or microSD card as applicable.
  7. Use a reliable seller. Confirm the warranty source, return window, condition, and battery-health policy for marketplace or refurbished listings.
  8. Interpret water resistance correctly. IP68-rated water and dust resistance is based on controlled conditions. It is not immunity to drops, salt water, pool chemicals, liquid pressure, or charging while wet, and liquid damage may not be covered by warranty.

Final recommendations by buyer type

Choose the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G if you want the safest all-around phone and expect to keep it for years.

Choose the Moto G Stylus 2025 if you need the built-in stylus, headphone jack, microSD slot, wireless charging, or a high-resolution large display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Moto G Power 2025 if you want to spend about $300 and prioritize battery, durability, and expandable storage.

Choose the Pixel 9a only if you find a genuine unlocked price below $400 or decide its camera and seven-year support justify stretching to $500.

Choose the CMF Phone 1 only after confirming the exact U.S. carrier, bands, VoLTE, NFC, warranty, and return arrangements.
