8 Best E-Commerce Hosting Providers for 2026: Costs, Features, and Who Each Is For

By TheFinanceBase Team 16 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shopify is the best e-commerce hosting provider for most new and growing stores in 2026 because it combines hosting, storefront tools, checkout, inventory, multichannel selling, and support in one managed platform. It is not the cheapest option for every business, though. BigCommerce is a stronger fit for complex catalogs and B2B; Wix and Squarespace suit design-led stores; WooCommerce offers the most control; Hostinger and Bluehost target budget-conscious WordPress users; and Shift4Shop can be exceptional value for eligible U.S. merchants.

The important distinction is that “e-commerce hosting” describes two different models. Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger Ecommerce, and Shift4Shop are largely hosted commerce platforms. WooCommerce is free, open-source commerce software that runs on WordPress and requires hosting. Bluehost is a managed WordPress/WooCommerce host, while WordPress.com Commerce is another managed route for running WooCommerce. The prices and responsibilities are not directly interchangeable.

That does not change the ranking; the recommendations below are based on business fit, total cost, control, and complexity. Quick comparison: the best e-commerce hosting providers

Provider Best for Published pricing or cost model Main trade-off
Shopify Most new and growing stores Basic: $39 monthly or $29 monthly when paid yearly Apps, payment fees, and possible third-party payment fees raise the real cost
BigCommerce Scaling catalogs, B2B, and complex commerce 2026 Core, Growth, and Scale: $29, $79, and $299 monthly on annual billing; Performance is custom GMV thresholds, automatic plan movement, and 2026 payment-fee changes require careful modeling
Wix Design-led small businesses Displayed U.S. annual-billing prices are approximately $29, $39, and $159 for Core, Business, and Business Elite Regional pricing and promotions vary; advanced commerce operations may outgrow it
Squarespace Visually polished boutiques and creator businesses Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced plans; price depends on the account, location, and billing term Current and legacy plan generations coexist, with different commerce fees
WooCommerce Ownership, customization, and specialized workflows Free core software; WooCommerce estimates hosting at about $25–$350 monthly for most stores You must budget for hosting, security, updates, extensions, backups, and technical work
Hostinger Low-cost entry points Hostinger Ecommerce displayed at $2.99, $7.99, and $19.99 monthly; WooCommerce hosting promotions differ Promotional terms and renewals differ, and Hostinger Ecommerce is not the same as WooCommerce hosting
Bluehost Beginners who want managed WooCommerce onboarding eCommerce Essentials displayed around $6.14 monthly on a 36-month promotion; renewal pricing is higher Long introductory terms can obscure the ongoing cost
Shift4Shop Eligible U.S. merchants using Shift4 Payments Basic Store $29, Plus Store $79, Pro Store $229 monthly; a payment-linked free plan is also advertised The free offer is not universal and depends on U.S. eligibility and Shift4 Payments

How to compare e-commerce hosting costs correctly

The advertised subscription is only one line in an online store’s budget. A useful comparison starts with this formula:

#1 Best Overall
Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Total cost of ownership = subscription or hosting + domain renewal + payment processing + platform transaction fees + apps or extensions + themes + security and backups + development and maintenance.

Also check whether the quoted price is:

  • Monthly or an effective monthly rate on an annual, 36-month, or 48-month commitment.
  • An introductory promotion or the price charged at renewal.
  • Limited by product count, staff accounts, storage, bandwidth, orders, or gross merchandise value.
  • Available in your country and currency.
  • Dependent on using the platform’s own payment service.
  • Excluding paid apps, premium themes, domain renewal, tax, or migration work.

Payment processing is especially important. A platform can have a low subscription price but become more expensive at higher sales volume if it adds a transaction fee, charges more for an external payment provider, or automatically moves a store to a higher plan. Estimate costs at your expected monthly sales—not only at today’s sales.

1. Shopify: best overall for most new and growing stores

Shopify is the safest default for a merchant who wants to launch quickly without managing servers, WordPress updates, or a collection of separate commerce systems. Its managed platform combines a hosted storefront, checkout, product and inventory management, social and marketplace selling, AI-chat selling tools, and in-person sales through Shopify POS.

The official pricing lineup lists Basic at $39 per month when paid monthly or $29 per month when paid yearly. Higher Grow, Advanced, and Plus tiers are available for stores with more operational, reporting, automation, or enterprise requirements. POS Pro is an additional option for businesses with more advanced physical-retail needs. You can review the current Shopify plans before choosing a billing term.

Why Shopify ranks first

  • It is fast to set up for a first-time merchant.
  • Hosting, security infrastructure, checkout, and core store operations are managed together.
  • The app ecosystem can fill specialized marketing, fulfillment, subscription, and customer-service needs.
  • It supports online, social, marketplace, and in-person selling from one broader platform.

Where Shopify can become expensive

The subscription does not represent the full cost. Payment rates and possible third-party payment-provider fees vary by merchant location and plan. Apps can become a recurring expense, and a store may need a higher-tier plan as its reporting, automation, staff, or sales requirements grow. Evaluate payment processing and add-ons against expected order volume before treating Basic as the final price.

Choose Shopify if: your priority is a polished, integrated store with minimal infrastructure work. It is less suitable when owning the underlying code and database is more important than speed and convenience.

2. BigCommerce: best for scaling catalogs and complex commerce

BigCommerce is the strongest alternative for established retailers, merchants with large or complicated catalogs, and businesses that need substantial commerce functionality without assembling as many separate extensions. It is also worth considering for B2B workflows, although the exact features and plan fit should be confirmed against your requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BigCommerce’s 2026 structure uses Core, Growth, Scale, and Performance tiers. The official pricing page lists annual-billing prices of $29 per month for Core, $79 for Growth, and $299 for Scale. Performance uses custom pricing and is listed as starting at $1,499 per month billed annually.

The plan is tied to sales volume. BigCommerce describes Core as targeting businesses up to $30,000 in trailing-twelve-month inclusive GMV, Growth up to $100,000, and Scale up to a $33,333 monthly GMV cap before its stated overage mechanism. Read those thresholds carefully: GMV is not the same as profit, and a store can cross a plan boundary even when its margins are narrow.

A major 2026 cost warning

BigCommerce announced a pricing and payments update effective June 1, 2026. Under the announced structure, self-serve plans can incur an Open Payment Provider Fee on orders processed through open payment providers, while embedded payment providers are treated differently. The applicable fee structure, GMV thresholds, and automatic plan movement can materially change the total cost.

That makes BigCommerce pricing something to model rather than simply compare in a monthly-price table. Ask which payment provider you will use, whether the provider is treated as embedded or open, what happens when you cross a GMV threshold, and whether your expected order volume could trigger a different plan.

Rank #2
Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model) | External Solid State Drive, Compatible with Laptops & Tablets, Up to 2M Drop Protection, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Choose BigCommerce if: catalog depth, B2B requirements, built-in commerce features, or long-term operational scale matter more than the simplicity of a basic site builder. For a small store with a straightforward catalog, it may offer more complexity than you need.

3. Wix: best for design-led small businesses

Wix is a strong choice when the store is part of a broader business website. It combines a visual editor with hosting, security infrastructure, content publishing, appointments, marketing tools, and e-commerce. That makes it particularly useful for a consultant, creator, studio, local business, or boutique that sells products alongside services and content.

Wix’s U.S. pricing page displays a free tier and paid Core, Business, and Business Elite plans. The displayed annual-billing prices are approximately $29, $39, and $159 per month, respectively. Wix notes that pricing varies by geography and promotion. Paid e-commerce plans are required to accept payments, and Wix’s own e-commerce guidance describes annual e-commerce pricing as roughly $27 to $159 monthly depending on plan and location.

The Core and higher plans add payment acceptance and commerce capabilities, while higher tiers provide more storage, marketing, automation, and developer-oriented features. The visual editor is the main attraction: a nontechnical owner can adjust the presentation of a store without managing a theme framework or server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the current Wix e-commerce plans for your country rather than relying on a U.S. promotional price. Also test your intended catalog, product options, shipping rules, tax setup, subscriptions, and automation before committing. Wix is convenient for a design-led store, but a retailer with advanced catalog logic or demanding back-office workflows may eventually prefer a commerce-first platform.

Choose Wix if: brand presentation, editing simplicity, appointments, content, and a manageable product catalog need to live together.

4. Squarespace: best for visually polished smaller stores

Squarespace is well suited to creators, boutiques, service businesses with products, and small catalogs where the website’s visual presentation is as important as its back-office depth. Current documentation uses Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced plan names, although some existing customers may still see legacy Commerce Basic or Commerce Advanced plans.

Current plans support unlimited products and can be used to sell physical goods, digital products, courses, memberships, and services. The most important cost distinction is the commerce transaction fee: current Basic plans may carry a 2% commerce transaction fee, while Core, Plus, and Advanced plans have 0% commerce transaction fees as the new plans roll out. Legacy Commerce Basic and Commerce Advanced plans also show 0% commerce transaction fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment processing is separate from the platform’s commerce fee. For U.S. Squarespace Payments, standard cards are listed at 2.9% plus $0.30, with additional rates or surcharges possible for certain card types and international transactions.

Because Squarespace is transitioning between plan generations, confirm which lineup your account will receive and whether the plan is current or legacy. The current Squarespace commerce plans should be evaluated on subscription price, the 2% Basic fee where applicable, payment processing, and the features you actually use—not visual design alone.

Choose Squarespace if: the store is relatively manageable and you want high-quality presentation, publishing, memberships, courses, or services in the same site. Choose Shopify or BigCommerce instead when advanced commerce operations are the center of the business.

Rank #3

  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

5. WooCommerce: best for control, ownership, and customization

WooCommerce is not a conventional all-in-one hosting provider. It is free, open-source commerce software for WordPress. The core platform has no monthly subscription and no revenue share, but the merchant chooses and pays for hosting, payment processing, themes, extensions, security, backups, and technical support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WooCommerce’s cost guidance estimates hosting at approximately $25–$350 per month for most stores and individual extensions at roughly $29–$299 per year. Those figures are useful planning ranges, not a quote. A small store can spend less, while a busy or highly customized store can spend considerably more once development and maintenance are included.

Technical responsibility matters

For WooCommerce 10.8 and later, the published server recommendations call for:

  • WordPress 6.9 or later.
  • PHP 8.3 or later.
  • MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or later.
  • HTTPS.
  • At least 256 MB of WordPress memory.

These requirements do not mean every store needs an expensive server on day one. They do mean that hosting quality, software compatibility, staging, backups, update discipline, and troubleshooting are part of the buying decision. A cheap hosting plan can be a poor bargain if an update breaks checkout or the store cannot handle its traffic and plugins.

WooCommerce is compelling when you need ownership of data and code, custom checkout or catalog logic, a content-heavy WordPress site, or a specialized workflow. You can compare providers offering managed WooCommerce hosting if you want WordPress expertise and less server administration. You should also budget for necessary WooCommerce extensions rather than assuming the free core includes every feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WordPress.com Commerce: a managed WooCommerce route

WordPress.com Commerce is an alternative for people who want WooCommerce features with managed WordPress hosting. Its current U.S. pricing page displays Commerce at $70 monthly, or lower effective monthly rates on longer billing terms. The Commerce support documentation describes included WordPress hosting, unlimited products and orders, WooCommerce functionality, marketing tools, and 24/7 support.

This option can reduce infrastructure work, but it remains a managed WordPress/WooCommerce environment rather than the same all-in-one operating model as Shopify. Compare included services, extension compatibility, backups, performance needs, and renewal pricing before migrating.

Choose WooCommerce if: flexibility and ownership justify the additional responsibility. It is not the best choice for someone who wants a store with no updates, hosting decisions, or plugin maintenance.

6. Hostinger: best low-cost entry point

Hostinger has two different products that should not be confused. Its traditional hosting can run WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OpenCart, or custom PHP stores. Its newer Hostinger Ecommerce product is an all-in-one commerce builder. The former hosts software you configure; the latter is closer to a managed store platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hostinger Ecommerce

Hostinger Ecommerce’s displayed plans list Starter at $2.99 per month, Growth at $7.99, and Scale at $19.99. These are promotional or annual-term prices and have separate renewal prices. The product supports physical products, digital products, services, print-on-demand, and subscriptions, and states that it charges 0% platform transaction fees.

Hostinger hosting for WooCommerce

Hostinger’s e-commerce hosting page lists Cloud Startup at $7.99 per month on a 48-month term, renewing at $25.99 per month. The offer includes managed WordPress/WooCommerce support, CDN, SSL, migration, and support features. It is still important to distinguish the hosting package from the WooCommerce software and from Hostinger Ecommerce’s separate plan lineup.

Rank #4
Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Before buying Hostinger e-commerce hosting, decide which model you actually want. A small seller who wants an integrated builder may prefer Hostinger Ecommerce. A WordPress user who wants more control may want hosting for WooCommerce, but must take responsibility for themes, plugins, updates, and store configuration.

Choose Hostinger if: the initial budget is decisive, your catalog is small or moderate, and you are comfortable checking renewal prices and working within a lower-cost ecosystem. Do not describe it as universally cheapest without specifying the term, promotion, renewal price, geography, and required add-ons.

7. Bluehost: best beginner-oriented managed WooCommerce host

Bluehost is aimed at beginners who want WordPress and WooCommerce with guided setup, bundled hosting, and support. Its eCommerce Essentials offer includes WooCommerce, a free domain and SSL, CDN, malware scanning and removal, and support.

The current pricing page displays eCommerce Essentials at approximately $6.14 per month on a 36-month promotion, renewing at approximately $26.99 per month. A separate Bluehost WooCommerce comparison page says WooCommerce plans start at $6.99 per month in its presentation. Bluehost’s support documentation lists renewal pricing for eCommerce Essentials at $32.99 monthly, $24.99 per month on a 12-month term, and $21.99 per month on a 36-month term, while warning that pricing can change.

Those different figures demonstrate why a Bluehost quote needs four labels: the exact product, the promotional term, the renewal term, and the date checked. The attractive introductory rate is not the store’s permanent operating cost.

Use Bluehost WooCommerce hosting when guided WordPress onboarding and human support matter more than choosing every layer of infrastructure yourself. Compare the plan’s storage, backup, security, staging, email, plugin policy, and renewal terms before signing a long contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Bluehost if: you specifically want WooCommerce and prefer a beginner-oriented managed host. If you do not want to maintain WordPress at all, a hosted platform such as Shopify may be simpler.

8. Shift4Shop: best U.S.-specific value when payment eligibility fits

Shift4Shop is a commerce-first platform with a particularly compelling U.S. offer. Its U.S. plans page lists Basic Store at $29 per month, Plus Store at $79, and Pro Store at $229. It also advertises a free End-to-End Ecommerce plan with unlimited staff, unlimited products, and no additional transaction fees.

The free plan is not free hosting for everyone. It is limited to U.S. merchants and tied to the Shift4 Payments ecosystem. Eligibility, payment-provider requirements, merchant underwriting, geography, and account approval all matter. Payment processing costs can still apply even when the platform does not add an additional transaction fee.

That makes the current Shift4Shop plans most attractive to an eligible U.S. merchant who is comfortable using Shift4 Payments and wants a commerce-focused system without an additional platform transaction fee on the displayed plans. It is not a universal recommendation for international sellers or merchants who need complete payment-provider freedom.

Worth considering: Ecwid for adding a store to an existing website

Ecwid is a credible alternative when you already have a WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or other website and want to embed a lightweight store rather than rebuild the whole site. Its official pricing information says plans have no Ecwid transaction fees, unlimited bandwidth and storage, and product limits that rise from 10 products on Starter to unlimited products on Unlimited.

Ecwid documents pricing changes effective after March 2, 2026, so check the current offer before publishing a budget. Ecwid pricing can be relevant for a small catalog or an existing content site, but it is an alternative rather than a replacement for every full commerce platform in this ranking.

Which provider should you choose?

Your priority Best starting point Why
Launch quickly with minimal technical work Shopify Managed infrastructure and an integrated commerce stack
Complex catalog, B2B, or scaling operations BigCommerce Commerce-first features and plans designed around business volume
Brand design plus a small online store Wix Visual editing and broader business-site tools
Elegant content, products, courses, or memberships Squarespace Strong presentation and mixed content-commerce capability
Maximum ownership and custom logic WooCommerce Open-source software, WordPress flexibility, and control of the stack
Lowest initial budget Hostinger Low displayed promotional entry prices, with renewal terms to verify

Eligible U.S. seller seeking no additional platform transaction fee Shift4Shop Payment-linked free offer and paid plans, subject to eligibility
Store embedded into an existing website Ecwid Designed to add commerce without replacing the entire site

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Write down your sales assumptions. Estimate monthly orders, average order value, annual GMV, product count, variants, staff accounts, and international sales.
  2. Calculate payment costs. Identify the processor, card rates, international surcharges, chargeback costs, and any platform fee for using an external provider.
  3. Price the renewal year. Do not use a 36- or 48-month promotional rate as your long-term budget.
  4. List required features. Include subscriptions, memberships, digital products, wholesale pricing, multiple currencies, tax calculation, shipping rules, point of sale, marketplaces, and returns.
  5. Count paid add-ons. Make a list of required apps, plugins, extensions, premium themes, email tools, analytics, and automation.
  6. Decide who maintains the store. Hosted platforms shift more infrastructure work to the provider. WooCommerce shifts more responsibility to the merchant or developer.
  7. Check portability. Confirm what data can be exported, how URLs can be preserved, and what happens to themes, customer accounts, orders, subscriptions, and SEO settings if you leave.
  8. Test the buying path. Before launch, place test orders on mobile and desktop, verify taxes and shipping, test failed payments and refunds, and confirm confirmation emails.

Common mistakes when comparing providers

Comparing a free software license with a hosted platform

WooCommerce’s free core is not equivalent to a free Shopify-style store. Hosting, extensions, security, backups, and maintenance are separate costs. Conversely, a hosted platform’s higher subscription may include infrastructure that would otherwise require several services.

Ignoring transaction fees because the subscription looks cheap

A 0% platform transaction fee does not mean 0% payment cost. Card processing still applies, and some platforms change fees depending on the payment provider. BigCommerce’s announced June 1, 2026 changes make this issue especially important for merchants using open payment providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a provider before deciding on the operating model

First decide whether you want an all-in-one hosted platform, managed WordPress/WooCommerce, or self-managed WordPress. Then compare providers within the model. A low-cost host is not a bargain if you wanted a maintenance-free store, and a feature-rich hosted platform may be unnecessary for a ten-product catalog embedded in an existing site.

Calling one provider “the cheapest” without qualifications

There is no universal cheapest provider. The answer changes with billing term, promotion, renewal price, country, payment method, GMV, product count, and required add-ons. Use an annual cost worksheet and include at least the first-year and renewal-year totals.

Bottom line

Start with Shopify if you want the fastest, most broadly useful route to a professional online store. Choose BigCommerce for complex catalogs and scaling commerce, Wix or Squarespace for design-led businesses, and WooCommerce when control and customization justify technical responsibility. Hostinger and Bluehost are budget-oriented WordPress or commerce entry points, while Shift4Shop deserves special attention from eligible U.S. merchants. If you already have a website and need a lightweight embedded store, consider Ecwid.

Whichever platform you choose, compare the renewal price, payment costs, platform fees, add-ons, GMV or product limits, and migration effort before treating the advertised monthly rate as your real e-commerce budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shopify an e-commerce hosting provider?

Yes. Shopify is a managed commerce platform that bundles hosting, storefront tools, checkout, inventory, and other store operations. It is different from WooCommerce, where the merchant separately chooses hosting and manages more of the WordPress stack.

Is WooCommerce really free?

The core WooCommerce software is free, with no monthly subscription or revenue share. A real WooCommerce store still requires hosting, a domain, payment processing, themes or extensions, security, backups, updates, and possibly developer support.

Which e-commerce platform is cheapest?

There is no universal answer. Hostinger and Bluehost show low introductory prices, but renewal terms are higher. Shift4Shop advertises a payment-linked free plan for eligible U.S. merchants. WooCommerce has free core software but separate hosting and maintenance costs. Compare the complete first-year and renewal-year totals.

What is the best provider for a small business?

Shopify is the strongest general-purpose choice when quick setup and managed infrastructure matter. Wix or Squarespace may be better when the business is design-led and has a manageable catalog. WooCommerce can be a better fit when the business already relies on WordPress or needs custom functionality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add an online store to my existing website?

Yes. Ecwid is specifically designed to embed a store into WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or another existing website. Depending on your needs, WooCommerce can also extend WordPress, while a full Shopify or BigCommerce migration may be more appropriate for a commerce-first business.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Shopify. Best for complex scaling: BigCommerce. Best for design: Wix or Squarespace. Best for control: WooCommerce. Best budget entry: Hostinger. Best beginner WordPress route: Bluehost. Best conditional U.S. value: Shift4Shop. Compare renewal pricing, payment fees, transaction fees, add-ons, and maintenance—not just the headline monthly rate.
