If you need cash today, start with an ecoATM kiosk or a reputable local buyer. If you want the highest likely payout, sell the iPad privately or through Swappa. Gazelle and similar buyback services are easier than finding a buyer, but may pay less. Apple Trade In and Best Buy Trade-In generally provide retailer credit—not unrestricted cash.
The right choice depends on five things: how quickly you need payment, whether you need physical cash, the iPad’s condition, how much work you will do, and the net amount left after fees and shipping.

“Cash” can mean physical bills, a bank or PayPal payment, or proceeds from a marketplace sale. Store credit is different. Apple says its trade-in produces purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card, while Best Buy describes payment as a Best Buy eGift Card. Do not compare either offer with cash at face value unless you already intend to spend the credit there.

Acceptance, payment, identification requirements, and the amount offered vary by kiosk, model, condition, and local rules. An online offer may be locked for a limited period, but the final offer depends on the kiosk’s inspection. Confirm the current requirements and location before making a trip.
Choose ecoATM when: you value immediate cash more than maximum resale value, do not want to photograph or list the iPad, or have a damaged device that may be difficult to sell privately.
Do not choose it automatically when: the iPad is a newer, high-capacity, cellular, or especially clean model. A private buyer may pay more.
2. Local private sale: often the best cash-to-price balance
Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, neighborhood groups, and local electronics buyers can produce physical cash without shipping or marketplace fees. A local sale is frequently the strongest option when you want both a relatively high price and same-day payment.
The cost is time and safety risk. You must answer messages, screen buyers, handle no-shows, describe defects accurately, and make sure the payment is real.
- Meet in a public, well-lit place with cameras; a police-station exchange area is preferable for an expensive iPad.
- Do not meet at home or reveal unnecessary personal information.
- Accept cash only after checking it, or wait until an electronic payment is visible and settled in your own account.
- Never rely on a payment screenshot, email, or “payment sent” message.
- Keep communications inside the platform when possible.
- Photograph the iPad’s condition and record its serial number privately before handing it over. Do not publish the full serial number in the listing.
State the exact model, storage, Wi-Fi or cellular configuration, condition, battery behavior, accessories, and repair history. “As-is” is not a substitute for describing a cracked screen, dead pixels, charging problem, or account lock.
3. Swappa: a structured route to a higher online payout
Swappa lets you list used technology for direct sale to buyers. Its selling page states that listings are free and that the buyer and seller each pay a 3% fee when an item sells. You still need to create an accurate listing, package the iPad, ship it, and manage any dispute.

Swappa is a good fit for a working iPad that is easy to describe and worth enough to justify shipping. It may produce more than a wholesale buyback because you are selling closer to the consumer market, but payment is not immediate.
Calculate the amount you actually keep:
Sale price − seller fee − shipping − insurance − packing materials = approximate proceeds.
Check the platform’s current rules before listing. A buyer claim that the item was not as described can delay payment or create a return obligation, so take photographs of the device, serial number, packaging, and shipping receipt.
4. eBay: broad reach, but compare net proceeds
eBay can be useful for rare models, large storage capacities, cellular versions, or configurations that may have fewer local buyers. Its sold listings can also help you research completed-sale prices.
Fees and terms vary by category, account, promotions, and shipping arrangement. eBay’s general fee page currently describes a basic final-value fee of up to 13.6% in most categories, up to the stated thresholds, plus a per-order fee for qualifying orders. Check the live fee calculator and your seller terms before relying on a price.
A high eBay headline price may produce less money than a lower local offer after fees, shipping, packing, insurance, and return or dispute risk. Never price from an unsold listing or current retail price alone.
5. Gazelle and other buyback services: less work than a marketplace
Gazelle and similar services let you select the device, receive a quote, ship the iPad, and wait for inspection and payment. This avoids public listings and buyer negotiations. Some programs may redirect certain devices to another channel, and eligibility, payment methods, promotions, and timing can change.

The important risk is a revised quote. If inspection finds that the iPad differs from your description, the service may reduce the offer or reject it. Before shipping, save the original quote and photograph the device from every side. Read the current rules for revised offers, returns, and payment timing. If the final offer is unacceptable, decline it when the service allows that option.

Apple Trade In is practical if you are already buying an Apple product. Apple says you can receive credit toward a purchase or an Apple Gift Card, and devices with no trade-in value can still be recycled free of charge.
The actual value depends on the exact model, storage, connectivity, and condition. A displayed range such as $45 to $690 is not a universal price list for all iPads. Use Apple’s live estimator instead.
Apple’s trade-in terms also allow the quote to change if inspection does not match the description, the device arrives outside the required time window, or Find My has not been removed. Treat Apple credit honestly: it may be financially useful if you were going to buy from Apple, but it cannot be spent like cash everywhere.
7. Best Buy Trade-In: another store-credit option
Best Buy Trade-In is worth checking if you plan to buy eligible electronics from Best Buy. Best Buy describes payment as a Best Buy eGift Card, not cash or a general-purpose bank payment.

8. Pawn shops, repair shops, and parts buyers
Call first rather than assuming a shop buys iPads. Ask:

- Do you buy iPads, or only phones?
- Do you pay cash or store credit?
- Do you accept cracked, water-damaged, or non-working devices?
- Do you require government identification?
- Is the quote final after inspection?
Pawn shops may be fast but often offer less because they must resell the device and manage their own risk. Repair shops may buy desirable models or broken devices for parts. Recyclers and parts buyers are more appropriate for non-booting or severely damaged iPads, but the payout is usually low.
Which option is most likely to pay the most?
A working iPad usually has its best chance of a strong net payout through a local private sale or a structured marketplace such as Swappa. Those routes put you closer to the consumer-market price, but require more effort and introduce buyer, shipping, and dispute risks.
Buyback services and kiosks pay for convenience through their pricing. They may still be the rational choice if your time is valuable or you need money immediately.
Compare net proceeds, not headline offers. For example, if an iPad sells for $400, subtract the marketplace fee, shipping, insurance, and packing costs before comparing that result with a local cash offer. The $400 figure is only an example, not a current iPad valuation.
How to identify and price your iPad
- Open Settings → General → About and record the model information and serial number. Apple’s current trade-in guidance also points sellers to this location.
- Record the iPad family and generation, storage capacity, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular configuration, color, and any AppleCare or warranty information.
- Test whether it boots, charges, connects to Wi-Fi, responds to touch, and holds a usable charge.
- Check for cracks, dents, dead pixels, camera or speaker problems, water damage, repairs, and missing accessories.
- For a private sale, compare recent completed sales for the same model, storage, connectivity, and condition. Do not use an unsold listing, current retail price, or automated trade-in quote as proof of market value.
Apple’s guidance also recommends checking Parts and Service History where available. An unfinished repair may need to be completed before a trade-in service accepts the device.

Do not hand over an iPad that remains connected to your Apple Account. A factory reset without removing the account can leave Activation Lock active and make the device unusable to the buyer.

1. Back up your information
Back up the iPad to iCloud or a computer. Do not manually delete photos, contacts, or documents while signed in to iCloud; Apple warns that doing so can delete them from iCloud and other connected devices.

2. Sign out of your Apple Account
For iPadOS 26 or later, Apple’s current path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Choose Erase This iPad or Sign Out But Don’t Erase.
- Follow the prompts to sign out of iCloud and the Store.
For iPadOS 18 or earlier, use Settings → [your name] → Sign Out, enter the Apple Account password, and tap Turn Off.
3. Erase all content and settings
Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Erase All Content and Settings. Enter the passcode or Apple Account password when prompted. Apple says this process turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
4. Verify the setup screen
After erasing, the iPad should show the initial setup screen rather than the former owner’s home screen. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, Activation Lock has not been cleared. Do not ship or sell it until that is fixed.

5. Document and protect the device
- Remove the SIM card and any memory card.
- Cancel or transfer a cellular plan.
- Photograph the screen, back, corners, ports, camera, and setup screen.
- Keep the serial number and proof of ownership private.
- Disclose all cracks, dents, battery problems, repairs, and missing accessories.
What to do with a damaged, locked, or managed iPad
Cracked but working
Get a damaged-device quote from a buyback service or list it locally as cracked or “as-is.” Include close-up photographs. A private buyer may pay more, but hiding the damage increases the chance of a dispute.
Does not power on
Try a known-good cable and charger, but do not spend heavily on repair without comparing the repair cost with the expected resale value and parts value. Contact a repair shop, specialist buyer, or recycler.
Water-damaged or severely damaged
Disclose the damage and seek a specialist or parts quote. Do not assume a normal marketplace buyer will accept it.
Swollen or defective battery
Do not ship or place an iPad with a swollen, leaking, or visibly damaged battery into a normal sales channel. Apple’s trade-in instructions specifically warn against shipping electronics with swollen, damaged, or defective batteries. Follow local hazardous-electronics guidance instead.

A buyer or trade-in service generally cannot use an iPad that remains tied to your account. Recover the Apple Account and remove the device from Find My before selling. Do not try to sell it as a normal working iPad.
School- or employer-managed
A supervised or mobile-device-managed iPad may belong to a school or employer. The organization must remove its management profile and confirm that you are authorized to sell it.
Cellular model
Remove the SIM, cancel or transfer the cellular plan, check whether the device is financed or carrier-restricted, and disclose the carrier and unlocked status where relevant. Cellular capability can affect value, but only when the buyer can use it.
