Both remove the borrowed leverage used in leveraged spot trading, but neither removes cryptocurrency’s volatility or the possibility of losing money. Futures, options, and leveraged ETFs are not automatic safer substitutes because they can preserve, add, or magnify leverage.
The two routes that actually remove borrowed leverage
“No leverage” describes the funding of a position, not the risk of the asset. A fully paid cash purchase means you are not borrowing to enlarge the position. A spot bitcoin or ether ETP gives exchange-traded exposure without requiring you to transact directly on a crypto platform or manage wallet keys. In both cases, the underlying asset can fall sharply.

The right choice depends on what you want to own, where you want custody, how long you plan to hold, what costs you accept, and whether you understand the product’s tracking method. U.S. availability, account eligibility, and state-level access can differ, so confirm the current terms with the intermediary and product issuer.
Route 1: Buy cryptocurrency outright on the cash market
What changes when you pay in full
You purchase bitcoin or another supported asset with dollars and hold the position without borrowing. A 20% fall in the asset generally reduces the position’s market value by about 20%, rather than creating a margin call from borrowed funds. You can still lose most or all of the amount invested if the asset collapses, and a cash purchase does not protect against fraud, hacking, platform failure, manipulation, or poor execution.

Do not confuse a fully paid purchase with a platform’s margin, futures, or borrowing feature. Before submitting an order, confirm that the account is set to cash trading, that no credit is being extended, and that the order does not create a derivative position.
Cash-market risks remain substantial
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that many virtual-currency cash markets are not government-regulated or supervised in the same way as regulated securities markets. Its advisory identifies sharp price swings, possible manipulation, cyber risks, weak platform safeguards, and conflicts of interest—including situations in which a platform may trade against its customers—as concerns. Price and liquidity problems in cash markets can also affect derivative prices.
That means removing leverage changes the loss mechanics but not the market’s underlying uncertainty. A platform’s advertised price, withdrawal policy, insurance language, and dispute process require separate scrutiny.
Choose how the private keys will be controlled
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that a crypto wallet does not contain the crypto asset itself. It stores the private keys or passcodes needed to access and transfer the asset. Your custody choice determines who can authorize transactions and who bears the burden when access is lost.
- Self-custody: You control the keys directly. A hardware or other cold-storage wallet can keep keys offline when not in use, but a wallet is not a trading venue and does not reduce market risk. Lost, stolen, damaged, or hacked keys can permanently eliminate access. Create secure backups, protect recovery information from theft and unauthorized disclosure, and test your recovery procedure before transferring a large amount.
- Third-party custody: A provider controls the keys on your behalf. Before using one, investigate its regulatory status, supported assets, fees, security controls, insurance terms, whether it can rehypothecate or lend assets, withdrawal rules, and what happens if the provider fails or enters insolvency proceedings.
- Hot-wallet access: Internet-connected wallets are convenient for transactions but expose keys to online attacks. Convenience should be weighed against the amount kept online and the frequency of transfers.
A practical cash-purchase process
- Confirm that the intermediary serves your U.S. jurisdiction and that the account is eligible for cash trading.
- Deposit only money you can afford to lose and verify that no margin or borrowing feature is enabled.
- Review the asset’s order book, spread, trading, withdrawal, and network fees before placing an order.
- Decide whether the platform or you will control the keys. If self-custody is chosen, set up and test the wallet and backups first.
- Send a small test transfer before moving a larger balance, and verify the destination address on the device or application you trust.
- Keep records of purchases, transfers, and fees for your own reporting and account-management needs.
Route 2: Use a spot bitcoin or ether ETP
What an ETP provides
SEC investor guidance describes spot bitcoin and ether ETPs as exchange-traded commodity trusts that hold the underlying asset. Shares trade in a securities account, so you do not personally transact on a crypto platform or manage wallet keys. You own shares in the vehicle, not the coins directly.

These products are often called ETFs in everyday conversation, but the SEC notes an important legal distinction: spot bitcoin and ether ETPs are not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Their offerings and securities register under the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The exact structure and disclosures of a particular product control.
Risks, tracking, and fees
An ETP is not a risk-free version of bitcoin or ether. The SEC identifies high volatility and speculation, possible deviations between the share price and the underlying asset, risks in the underlying spot markets, and sponsor fees that reduce the amount of crypto represented by each share over time. Trading prices can also be affected by market hours, liquidity, premiums, or discounts.

Read the product’s current prospectus and periodic reports. Compare its custody arrangements, valuation method, fee schedule, creation and redemption process, insurance language, and stated risks. Do not assume that two products have identical terms merely because both seek spot exposure.
How to evaluate and buy an ETP
- Verify that the product is currently offered to your type of U.S. brokerage account and review its prospectus.
- Identify whether it holds spot bitcoin or ether, how the holdings are valued, and who serves as custodian.
- Calculate the effect of the sponsor fee over your intended holding period and review any other account or trading charges.
- Check how closely the shares have tracked the underlying asset and understand that past tracking does not guarantee future results.
- Place a normal securities order only after confirming the ticker, order type, and market price; an ETP share is not the same as a wallet balance.
- Monitor issuer reports and material notices rather than relying on a product label or a marketing description.
Cash ownership and an ETP compared
| Question | Cash-market purchase | Spot bitcoin or ether ETP |
|---|---|---|
| What do you own? | The crypto asset held through your own wallet or a custodian. | Shares of an exchange-traded commodity trust that holds the underlying asset. |
| Does the purchase use borrowed leverage? | Not when the position is fully paid and the account is not on margin. | Not inherently; borrowing against the brokerage account could still create leverage. |
| Who controls access? | You, if self-custodied, or a crypto custodian. | The brokerage account and the ETP’s custodians manage access to the shares and underlying holdings. |
| Main access risk | Lost keys, cyberattack, withdrawal restrictions, or custodian failure. | Brokerage or issuer restrictions, trading interruptions, and the product’s custody and operational risks. |
| Typical cost categories | Trading spreads or fees, network and transfer charges, and possible custody fees. | Sponsor fees, brokerage trading costs, bid-ask spreads, and other charges disclosed in the prospectus. |
| Tracking question | Your result follows the asset you actually hold, less transaction and custody costs. | Share performance can deviate from the underlying asset because of fees, valuation, market trading, and structure. |
| Regulatory and availability check | Cash-market oversight varies by platform and jurisdiction. | Confirm the product’s registration, current offering, account eligibility, and intermediary access. |
Why futures and options are not automatic replacements
Futures
Futures can be used for hedging, but the CFTC characterizes speculation in virtual-currency futures as high risk. Some contracts are cash settled, so they do not deliver bitcoin or ether. Margin requirements can force you to add funds or close a position when the market moves against you, and losses can exceed your initial deposit.
Before trading, read the specific contract’s settlement method, margin rules, expiration, and position limits. Verify the intermediary’s CFTC registration where applicable. A futures position may reduce or increase exposure depending on its size and direction; it is not a simple cash-market substitute.

Options
An option is a contract with an expiration date, strike price, and premium. Its leverage comes from controlling exposure through the contract rather than paying the full notional amount. The SEC explains that margin can amplify option risks. Buyers can lose the premium; option writers can face much larger or potentially unlimited obligations depending on the position and collateral.

Leveraged and inverse ETFs generally target a multiple or inverse of a benchmark’s daily return. Because the exposure resets each day, compounding can produce a result very different from simply multiplying the benchmark’s return over several weeks or months. An exchange listing does not make a leveraged fund uncomplicated.
The SEC’s June 10, 2021 leveraged-investing bulletin illustrates the effect with a two-day example: an index falls 10% and then rises 10%, ending down 1%. A 2x daily ETF falls 20% and then rises 20%, ending down 4%. This is an illustration of daily compounding, not a forecast.
The SEC’s August 29, 2023 bulletin gives historical four-month examples. In one period, an index gained 2%, while a 2x daily leveraged ETF fell 6% and a 2x inverse ETF fell 25%. In another, an index gained around 8%, while a 3x daily leveraged ETF fell 53% and a 3x inverse ETF fell 90%. These figures describe the cited historical periods, not universal outcomes.

Bitcoin-futures leveraged or inverse ETFs add the volatility and speculative risks of futures markets. Read the prospectus for the daily objective, reset method, futures exposure, expenses, and intended holding period. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy states: AVOID ANY INVESTMENT STRATEGY OR PRODUCT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
Match the route to your objective
You want direct control of the asset
A fully paid cash purchase is the route that gives you direct exposure and, with self-custody, control of the keys. Accept the operational work: backups, address verification, security, transfers, and recovery planning. Do not hold more online than you can secure.
You want exchange-traded access in an existing brokerage account
A spot bitcoin or ether ETP may fit that access preference. You avoid personal key management, but you accept share-price tracking differences, sponsor fees, issuer and custodian risks, and the legal structure disclosed in the prospectus.
You want to hedge or express a short-term view
Futures, options, and leveraged funds are specialized instruments, not lower-risk versions of the two routes above. Their margin, expiration, daily reset, and loss mechanics require product-specific knowledge and monitoring.

What “lower leverage” does—and does not—mean
Removing borrowed leverage can eliminate margin calls and the possibility that a lender closes a position solely because collateral has fallen. It does not make bitcoin or ether stable, liquid in every market, or protected from fraud and operational failures. Direct ownership introduces key-management duties; an ETP transfers those duties to custodians while adding product fees and tracking differences. Derivatives and leveraged funds can reintroduce leverage even when they are purchased through a conventional brokerage account.
Use the current disclosures for the exact platform or product you are considering. The SEC bulletins are investor-education materials and do not themselves create new legal obligations; product documents and applicable rules govern a particular transaction.
