If you have lost access to a Bitcoin wallet, first determine whether it is a self-custody wallet or an account held by an exchange. A self-custody wallet can usually be restored only with its recovery phrase or wallet backup, plus any additional passphrase. An exchange account must be recovered through that provider’s official account-recovery process.

Do not reset a device that still opens, do not type secret words into a website or support chat, and do not pay anyone who promises to “unlock” your bitcoin. If both the valid backup and access to the original self-custody wallet are gone, recovery may be permanently impossible.

Start with a safety check

Before attempting recovery, stop actions that could destroy evidence or expose your keys. Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed, and anyone who obtains your recovery phrase, private key, PIN or passphrase may be able to move the funds.

  • Do not reset, wipe, update, trade in or discard a device that still opens the wallet.
  • Do not enter a recovery phrase into a browser, ordinary mobile or desktop app, online form, “wallet checker” or message.
  • Do not send bitcoin as a recovery fee. Bitcoin.org says no legitimate person, business or support team will ask for a recovery phrase or require bitcoin to “unlock” funds.
  • Use only the wallet maker’s or exchange’s official website, reached by typing a known address yourself or using documentation you already trust.
  • Write down what remains: device, PIN, password, recovery phrase, backup file, additional passphrase, account name, wallet app and any deliberately enabled cloud backup.

Trezor’s official guidance states: “We will never ask you for your wallet backup, even if you are speaking with our customer support.” Treat any alleged support agent who asks for secret material as a scammer.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Identify who controls the wallet

The recovery route depends on custody. A username-and-password account at an exchange is not recovered in the same way as a wallet whose private keys you control.

Type of access What you control Correct recovery route Main limit
Self-custody wallet Recovery phrase, private keys and possibly an extra passphrase Restore from a compatible backup using the wallet maker’s official procedure No central recovery department can recreate missing private keys
Custodial exchange account Login credentials and account identity information Use the exchange’s independently verified account-recovery process Requirements and review times vary by provider

Self-custody means the provider does not hold a copy of your keys. Bitcoin.com’s support material, for example, explains that it cannot access a user’s master password, recovery phrases or private keys. Its documented restoration options include a manually recorded phrase and an optional cloud backup that had to be enabled in the app; that feature should not be assumed to exist in other wallets.

Inventory every credential and backup

Make a private inventory before trying different wallet software. Keep it offline and never send a photograph or typed copy to support.

  • Original device: hardware wallet, phone, computer or old storage drive, and whether it still unlocks.
  • Recovery phrase or seed: the exact words and their order. Different wallets use different standards and word counts.
  • Wallet backup file: an encrypted file or provider-specific backup that was intentionally created.
  • Additional passphrase: sometimes called a hidden-wallet passphrase. It can create a completely different wallet from the same words.
  • PIN or app password: an access control for a device or application, not a replacement for the seed.
  • Configuration: wallet model, app, account number, derivation setting, multisignature arrangement and network.

Never test a phrase by pasting it into a web form. Trezor’s backup guidance says, “Never type your words into any app or website to verify this.”

Choose the recovery path that matches your situation

The device is lost or damaged, but the backup is available

A compatible replacement device or wallet application can generally restore a deterministic wallet from its backup. Compatibility matters: the replacement must support the same backup standard, derivation and account structure, and you must reproduce any additional passphrase or multisignature setup.

Backup formats are not universal. Trezor’s guidance describes 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and, on some devices, 20-word SLIP39 backups. Those are Trezor-specific examples, not a rule that every Bitcoin wallet uses the same words or standard.

  1. Confirm the wallet model and the provider’s current recovery documentation using an official source.
  2. Prepare a device that supports the same standard and account configuration.
  3. Enter the backup only where the official procedure requires it. Trezor instructs users to enter words when prompted by the physical device, not a computer or website.
  4. Re-create the same additional passphrase, if one was used. A blank passphrase and a passphrase containing even one different character lead to different keys.
  5. Check that the expected accounts and addresses appear before taking further action.

Ledger’s support guidance says a reset device can restore keys from its 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase. That is a vendor-specific procedure, so do not apply it automatically to another wallet.

The original device still works, but the written backup is missing

This is one of the best recovery opportunities. Do not wipe or reset the device. Keep it powered and protected, and consult the exact provider instructions for creating or verifying a backup.

Some devices display the recovery words only during initial setup. Trezor says its backup is shown once during setup, so an existing device may not offer a button to reveal the phrase later. Other wallets may provide an export or backup workflow; the correct steps depend on the wallet.

If the wallet remains usable, the provider may document a secure migration to a newly created wallet with a newly recorded backup. Do not follow a generic transfer recipe without checking address format, network, fees and destination verification. If you move funds, consider a small test transaction first, then verify the receiving address on the trusted device before sending the remainder.

The seed phrase is available, but the wallet appears empty

A phrase can be valid yet open a different wallet. Common causes include an omitted or incorrect additional passphrase, a different wallet app, another account index, a changed derivation setting, a different backup standard or a multisignature configuration that has not been recreated.

  1. Return to the original wallet maker’s documentation and identify the standard and account type used by the old wallet.
  2. Check whether an additional passphrase was enabled. Bitcoin Core documentation distinguishes the wallet passphrase from the seed; losing that passphrase can permanently block the protected wallet.
  3. Recreate the original account and derivation settings rather than generating random alternatives in unrelated apps.
  4. Compare receiving addresses with records you made previously, such as an old transaction receipt, without publishing your seed.

If the phrase may have been exposed, assume it is compromised. Use official instructions to create a new wallet with a new backup and move funds to it as soon as you can do so safely.

The hardware-wallet PIN is forgotten

A PIN protects access to the device; it is not the recovery phrase. On some hardware wallets, the documented response to a forgotten PIN is a device reset followed by restoration from the correct backup. The reset destroys the local copy on that device, so do not begin unless you have verified that the backup and any extra passphrase are available.

A replacement device does not recover a missing seed. It is useful only when you have a compatible, valid backup and can follow the maker’s current procedure.

The backup and passphrase are missing, and the original device is inaccessible

This is the hard limit for self-custody. Bitcoin.org developer documentation warns that keys lost before backup can mean permanent loss. Bitcoin Core explains that a seed and its passphrase are separate; forgetting the passphrase can make the wallet it protects permanently inaccessible. Guidance from Ledger and Trezor likewise says an unavailable backup prevents restoration after a device is reset, lost or permanently damaged.

You may search personal records for a backup you legitimately created offline, but do not give partial words, device access or a remote desktop session to a stranger promising guaranteed recovery. Brute-force “recovery services” cannot be treated as a general solution, and sharing incomplete secrets creates an opportunity for theft.

The missing access is to an exchange account

Go to the exchange’s official site independently and use its account-recovery, password-reset or identity-verification process. The exact requirements are provider-specific; the reviewed guidance does not establish one universal exchange procedure. Be prepared for the provider to request account-identifying information through its normal secure channel, but never provide a self-custody seed phrase because an exchange should not need one to restore a login.

Understand passphrases, backups and devices

A recovery phrase is the root backup for many deterministic wallets. A wallet backup can outlive a phone or hardware device, but only if the replacement supports the same format and configuration. An additional passphrase is not interchangeable with the seed: it can derive a separate set of keys, so a forgotten passphrase can leave the expected wallet invisible even when every seed word is correct.

Backups should be stored offline according to the wallet maker’s guidance. Bitcoin.org advises maintaining multiple secure physical backup locations and using durable storage; it also warns against keeping a recovery phrase as a photograph or in a cloud service. Trezor advises against digital copies. If a provider deliberately offers an encrypted cloud-backup feature, follow that provider’s documented security model rather than assuming every cloud copy is safe.

Recognize recovery scams

Loss of wallet access attracts impersonators because the victim is under pressure and may reveal secrets quickly. Warning signs include:

  • a request for the recovery phrase, private key, PIN or additional passphrase;
  • a demand to send bitcoin before funds can be “unlocked” or “verified”;
  • a link to a site that asks you to validate or synchronize a seed;
  • instructions to install remote-access software or share your screen;
  • claims that a blockchain search can reconstruct missing private keys.

Bitcoin.org’s FAQ states that “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask for your recovery phrase or require payment in bitcoin to ‘unlock’ funds.” Contact support through the provider’s official channel that you locate yourself, not through a message or advertisement.

When recovery is possible, uncertain or impossible

What remains Likely outcome What determines success
Compatible backup and a lost device Restore the existing wallet Matching standard, account settings and any passphrase
Working original device but no written backup Potentially create or verify a new backup, then migrate safely Whether the wallet still permits an official backup or export
Seed phrase but no expected funds Wallet may be recoverable after correcting configuration Correct passphrase, derivation, account and wallet format
Exchange login lost Use the custodian’s account-recovery process Provider rules and successful identity verification
No backup, no passphrase and no accessible device May be permanently inaccessible Whether a legitimate offline backup can still be found

No company, blockchain explorer or replacement device can recreate private keys that were never backed up. Treat any promise of guaranteed recovery as a security risk.

Prevent the next lockout

  1. Create the wallet backup exactly as the provider instructs and verify that you recorded every word in the correct order.
  2. Store durable physical copies in more than one secure location, protected from theft, fire and water.
  3. Record whether an additional passphrase exists, but keep it separate from the seed and never label it in a way that exposes both together.
  4. Keep instructions for the wallet model and account configuration with your estate or continuity plan without including the secret words in an online document.
  5. Periodically confirm that you can locate the backup and identify the correct wallet configuration, without typing the phrase into an online checker.

Provider interfaces and supported formats change. As of guidance reviewed through October 2026, use the current official instructions for your exact wallet model rather than relying on an old setup sequence.
