The route selected for your particular token pair, trade size, liquidity conditions, pool fees, network cost and execution model determines the result. An aggregator may improve execution by splitting an order across pools, using intermediate tokens, or asking competing solvers to fill an intent. Those techniques can also add hops, fees, latency or execution uncertainty.
Compare the complete expected result—not the headline token price. Check the quoted output after route and service fees, the gas or network cost, the route type, minimum-output protection, quote freshness and whether the transaction is an AMM swap or a solver-filled order. A more complicated route is worthwhile only when its price improvement exceeds its additional costs.

What routing changes in an Ethereum swap
Most Ethereum tokens trade through many separate liquidity sources. A pair may exist in several protocols, fee tiers and pool designs, while professional market makers or solver inventories may offer additional liquidity. If an aggregator sends an entire order through one pool, a large trade can consume a substantial share of that pool and move the price against the trader.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAutomated market maker (AMM) price impact generally increases as an order uses more of a pool’s available liquidity, and the increase can be non-linear. Routing software searches alternatives before submitting the transaction. It can choose a different pool, divide the input among pools, or trade through an intermediate token when that produces a better net result.

Single-pool routing
A direct route sends the input token to one pool and receives the output token from that pool. It is easy to inspect and usually has fewer contract calls, but it may suffer greater price impact when the pool is shallow relative to the order. A direct route can still be the best choice for a small trade or a pair with deep, low-fee liquidity.
Split routes
A split route allocates portions of the order to different pools or protocols. One portion might use a deep, higher-fee pool while another uses a lower-fee pool with less capacity. The displayed effective price is the combined result of those portions, including each pool’s fee and the route’s execution costs. 1inch explains the mechanics of split and partial-fill routes in its help documentation: its split-route guide.
Splitting does not guarantee a better outcome. The improvement from avoiding price impact must exceed the extra gas and any additional pool fees. For a small order, dividing the trade can cost more in network fees than it saves in price impact.
Multi-hop routes
A multi-hop route exchanges through one or more intermediate tokens—for example, token A to a liquid intermediary and then to token B. Intermediate liquidity can make an otherwise illiquid pair tradable, but every additional pool introduces another price, fee and contract execution step. The route’s final output—not the number of hops—determines whether it was useful.
How a route is evaluated
A router typically simulates candidate paths and compares expected output with liquidity, pool fees and network cost. Uniswap’s support documentation describes its Uniroute system as considering price, liquidity and network cost, and adding a split or extra hop when the expected price improvement outweighs the added cost. The same page explains how the app exposes pool and split details in its route view: How does routing work?

| Routing choice | Potential benefit | What can reduce the benefit |
|---|---|---|
| One pool | Fewer calls and usually lower execution overhead | Greater price impact if liquidity is shallow |
| Split across pools | Uses more available depth and can reduce impact on a large order | Extra gas, pool fees and contract complexity |
| Intermediate-token hop | Connects pairs that lack a deep direct market | Another spread, fee and price-impact event |
| Solver or intent fill | May access several venues or private inventory without exposing every pool path | Depends on solver participation, quote terms and fill availability |
AMM aggregation versus solver or intent execution
“DEX aggregator” can describe two materially different execution models. In an AMM route, the transaction calls on-chain liquidity pools. In an intent-based route, you sign an order describing what you want and a third party—often called a solver or filler—competes to complete it. Comparing the models requires looking at the final execution terms, not just the interface label.
AMM routes
Uniswap’s API documentation describes AMM routes using supported on-chain pools such as Uniswap v2, v3 or v4. The API can return a direct route, a split route or a multi-hop route. Once submitted, the transaction executes against the specified on-chain pools, subject to the transaction’s slippage and minimum-output settings.
AMM routes are transparent when the interface shows the pools and proportions. They also depend on the liquidity and prices available when the quote is created. A route that was available a few seconds earlier may no longer be optimal after another trade changes a pool’s reserves.
Intent and solver routes
UniswapX is an intent-based protocol in which third-party solvers compete to fill an order. Solvers can source liquidity from on-chain pools and off-chain inventory. The user signs an order, and a filler submits the settlement transaction. The UniswapX whitepaper describes the protocol as a non-custodial Dutch-auction system using off-chain signed orders settled on-chain: UniswapX whitepaper.
Because the filler pays gas to submit the settlement transaction, a “gas-free” user experience does not mean the execution is cost-free. The filler recovers its costs through the execution price. Your comparison should therefore use the complete amount received and any explicit fees rather than treating a displayed gas estimate as the only cost.

Uniswap API’s current routing rule
The current Uniswap developer guide says its API includes a UniswapX route when an order exceeds 300 USDC equivalent, or when the UniswapX quote improves on the AMM route by at least 0.2%. For orders at or below 300 USDC equivalent, the improvement condition applies. These are implementation rules for that API, not a general threshold that applies to every aggregator or wallet.
Recommended Free Tools
The guide also notes that solvers may be unable or unwilling to fill an order. When the request permits it, the API can fall back to AMM routing. A soft quote may be followed by a hard quote when a UniswapX order is signed, so the terms shown before signing are not necessarily a permanent fill commitment. Read the current details at AMM vs UniswapX Routing.
Other aggregator interfaces
1inch describes Pathfinder as searching swap paths across decentralized exchanges and different liquidity depths. Its explanation of route construction is useful for understanding how an aggregator can divide an order, but the company’s claim that it offers “best rates” is a description of its own service, not independent evidence that it wins every comparison. The mechanism is outlined at How does 1inch offer the best rates?.
Fees also depend on the product path. 1inch’s fee documentation distinguishes intent-based or resolver fills from DEX-aggregator transactions and says some paths may have gas covered by resolvers while others pass network gas and infrastructure fees to the user. Check the actual quote and transaction details for the route you are about to use: Do I pay fees when using 1inch?.
How to compare aggregators for the same swap
Run the comparison as a trade-specific calculation. Use the same wallet, chain, input amount, recipient and slippage assumptions on each service. Quotes taken at different times can represent different market conditions, so record them close together and recheck immediately before signing.

- Enter identical trade details. Use the same input token, output token, amount, wallet and recipient address. A change in recipient can alter fee or approval behavior, and a change in amount can alter the route entirely.
- Record the expected output. Capture the quoted output token amount and whether the number is an indicative quote, a firm order or a minimum guaranteed amount. Do not compare only the exchange rate shown in a headline.
- Subtract every stated cost. Include pool or route fees, service or infrastructure fees, and gas or network costs. If gas is paid by a solver, treat it as embedded in the execution price rather than assuming it is free.
- Inspect the execution model. Identify whether the route calls AMM pools directly or creates a signed intent for a solver. For an AMM route, inspect the pools, fee tiers, intermediate tokens and split percentages when the interface displays them. For an intent, check the order expiry, filler conditions and whether a fallback route is allowed.
- Compare trade size with liquidity depth. Large orders are more likely to benefit from splitting or solver inventory. Small orders are more sensitive to fixed gas and contract-call costs, so a simple route can produce the higher net output even if its quoted pool price looks slightly worse.
- Check protections before signing. Confirm slippage tolerance, minimum output, deadline or order expiry, token approval target and the exact transaction or order you are signing. A quote that shows a high output but permits excessive slippage can be worse than a lower quote with tighter protection.
- Recheck freshness and availability. Route selection changes as pools trade and solver participation changes. Uniswap’s API results depend on request fields and live route availability. Refresh the quote at execution time rather than assuming the same service will select the same path later.
A useful net-output comparison
For each candidate, compare:
expected net result = quoted output − explicit route/service fees − gas or network cost expressed in the output asset
Keep the assumptions beside the number: quote timestamp, gas estimate, slippage setting, route type and whether the output is guaranteed or merely indicative. If one quote uses a solver and another uses AMM pools, the displayed gas lines may not be directly comparable; the amount you actually receive after all embedded and explicit costs is the meaningful result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a longer route is not automatically better
Additional hops can unlock liquidity, but they also consume gas and expose the trade to more price changes between quote and execution. A split route can reduce the price impact in each pool while increasing the number of calls. The router should select the extra step only when its simulated improvement exceeds the added cost, but market movement can change the result between simulation and mining.
There is also a difference between the best route in a simulation and the route that fills successfully. An AMM transaction can revert if its minimum output is not met. A solver can fail to provide a fill, decline the order or return the transaction through a permitted fallback path. Check the service’s failure behavior and do not treat a displayed route diagram as a guarantee.

A March 2, 2025 preprint by Yuki Yuminaga, Dex Chen and Danning Sui, Execution Welfare Across Solver-based DEXes, compares solver-based protocols with vanilla Uniswap v2/v3 routing for USDC-WETH and PEPE-WETH. It reports improved execution welfare for solver-based protocols in certain trade-size ranges. The effect was more pronounced for USDC-WETH than PEPE-WETH, and the outcomes differed among CoW Swap, 1inch Fusion and UniswapX. The authors also discuss possible inefficiencies related to solver-market structure and inventory depth. The study is available at arXiv:2503.00738.

Those results do not establish a current universal ranking. They cover two asset profiles, selected trade sizes and the study’s comparison method. A volatile, thinly traded token can produce a different result from a deep stablecoin pair, and solver participation can change over time.
Common route-related problems and fixes
The quote is worse than expected
Check whether the displayed figure excludes gas, a service fee or an embedded solver margin. Inspect the route for a shallow pool, high fee tier or unnecessary intermediate token. Requote with the same amount and settings on another route type, then compare net output.
The transaction reverts
A revert commonly means the market moved beyond the allowed slippage, the quote expired, an approval is missing, or a solver did not fill within the order conditions. Read the wallet’s simulation error, refresh the quote, verify approval and use a minimum output that reflects the token’s volatility rather than accepting unlimited slippage.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe route has many hops
Do not reject it solely because it is complex. Compare its expected net output and gas with a direct route. If the improvement is smaller than the extra network cost, choose the simpler path; if the trade is large and the additional liquidity materially reduces price impact, the hops may be justified.
A solver route disappears
Solver availability is dynamic. The order may fall back to an AMM route when the API permits, or you may need to request a fresh quote. Treat solver participation as a market condition, not a permanent feature of a particular aggregator.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist for Ethereum swappers
- Use the same amount and token pair when comparing quotes.
- Compare net output after all explicit and embedded costs.
- Inspect pool splits, fee tiers and intermediate tokens when available.
- Identify AMM versus intent or solver execution.
- Check quote age, order expiry, minimum output and slippage tolerance.
- Consider whether your trade is large enough for splitting to offset extra gas.
- Refresh immediately before signing because liquidity and solver availability change.
- Do not infer a universal winner from one quote or from a study covering only selected assets and sizes.
