If the EPFO website is not working, first identify which service has failed: the main website, UAN login, passbook, claim filing, claim status, OTP delivery, or Aadhaar authentication. These services can fail independently, so a passbook outage does not necessarily mean your UAN or claim is defective.
The safest sequence is to use an official EPFO address, check for service notices, retry from another browser or network, use the appropriate official alternative such as UMANG or the passbook service, and create an EPFiGMS grievance if the problem persists or a deadline is at risk.

Identify what is actually failing

First, check whether EPFO itself is down
Open the official EPFO homepage directly: https://www.epfindia.gov.in/. Do not rely on an old bookmark, a search advertisement, or a website claiming to provide EPFO support.

Then check the official EPFO Contact page for maintenance and service-disruption notices. EPFO has acknowledged intermittent disruption to online claim filing, separate network-related passbook problems, scheduled maintenance affecting Aadhaar authentication and potentially member, employer, and UMANG services, and temporary delays in contribution visibility during backend ledger work.

Those notices are examples of known service conditions, not proof of a nationwide outage at the moment you are reading this. The available official material does not establish a verified system-wide outage for the current date. Individual complaints on social media or unofficial outage pages also do not prove that every EPFO service is unavailable.
Test the failure in four ways:
- Try a current version of another browser.
- Open the page in a private or incognito window.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Try another device if one is available.
If the site works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, the problem may be local DNS, routing, firewall, or network filtering rather than EPFO. If only the passbook or claim page fails while the main site opens, treat it as a service-specific problem.
Try these low-risk browser and network fixes
- Close every EPFO tab and reopen the official page directly.
- Use a private or incognito window to remove stale login-session problems.
- Try a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari browser.
- Clear cookies and cached files for the EPFO site if the page loops, stays blank, or repeatedly returns to login.
- Temporarily disable extensions that can interfere with scripts, including ad blockers, aggressive privacy tools, and auto-translation tools.
- Set the device date and time to update automatically.
- Switch networks or restart the router if other websites are also failing.
Do not repeatedly submit a claim, password request, or OTP request while a page appears frozen. The request may have succeeded even if the confirmation page did not load. Check the relevant status page before trying again.
Never download an “EPFO access” APK, browser extension, or unknown app offered by a third party. The official mobile channel identified by EPFO is UMANG; use only the listing provided by your device’s official app store.
If UAN login or OTP is not working
A login failure is not the same as a complete EPFO outage. Start by entering the UAN and password manually, without extra spaces, and request a fresh captcha. Then try a private window or another browser.
For OTP problems:
- Confirm that the registered mobile phone has signal and can receive ordinary SMS messages.
- Wait before requesting another OTP. Multiple requests can make it unclear which code is current.
- Use only the official UAN activation, password-reset, or recovery process.
- Save the exact error message and the time of the failed attempt.
If the registered mobile number is no longer available, browser troubleshooting will not fix the underlying identity problem. You may need help from your employer or EPFO through the official grievance and support channels.

If the EPFO passbook is not opening
The passbook can be unavailable even when the main EPFO website or UAN portal works. Try the official Member Passbook portal separately, or use the EPFO section in UMANG. EPFO has also published a notice specifically concerning network failure of the Member Passbook facility.
The passbook page currently displays these balance-enquiry alternatives:
- Missed call: 9966044425
- SMS: send
EPFOHO UAN <LAN>to 7738299899
Preserve the spaces in the SMS format. LAN refers to the preferred language code used by the official service.
A recent contribution missing from the passbook does not automatically mean that your employer failed to deposit it. EPFO has published notices explaining that temporary non-visibility can occur while ledger updates are being processed. Compare the passbook with salary slips, employer contribution records, and any payment or claim acknowledgements. If the delay continues, raise a written grievance rather than assuming the money is lost.
If claim filing or claim status is not working
Before submitting a claim again, check whether the first attempt created a claim reference number. A timeout, blank page, or failed confirmation screen does not by itself prove that the claim was rejected.

For status checks, use the official EPFO Help area and its claim-status facility: EPFO claim-status guidance. The correct EPFO office and PF account information may be required. A technical failure of the status page is not a claim decision.

If claim filing remains unavailable:
- Check that required KYC and eligibility information is complete.
- Record the date, time, browser, device, network, and exact error.
- Take a screenshot showing the problem.
- Check status before making another submission.
- Use EPFiGMS if the problem persists or the matter is urgent.
If Aadhaar authentication fails
Possible causes include a mismatch between Aadhaar and UAN records, differences in name or date of birth, mobile or demographic-data problems, a temporary Aadhaar-validation outage, or an EPFO session failure.
Check spelling, date of birth, gender, and other identity fields against the relevant official records. Do not repeatedly submit mismatched information. Save the exact error and a screenshot. If the process stops with an EPFO validation error, the EPFO UMANG/UAN guidance identifies UMANG helpdesk escalation as an option.
If EPFO has announced maintenance, wait until the stated window has ended. If the mismatch appears to be in EPFO’s records, include that detail in an EPFiGMS grievance.

EPFO identifies UMANG as its official app and service channel. Its material also identifies EPFiGMS access through UMANG. Open the EPFO section inside the official UMANG app and try the specific service there.
UMANG may work when a browser session fails, but it is not a guaranteed workaround: some UMANG functions depend on EPFO’s underlying systems. If the same error appears in UMANG, record it and move to EPFiGMS or official support instead of installing an unofficial replacement.

Include:
- UAN or PF account details, entered only in the official portal;
- employer and establishment name;
- the specific service that failed;
- the exact error message;
- date and time of each attempt;
- browser, device, and network used;
- screenshots;
- claim, transaction, or previous grievance reference numbers; and
- the precise remedy requested.
EPFO’s Contact page says that a grievance pending for more than 15 days, or a grievance with unsatisfactory redressal, may be escalated by writing to [email protected] and including the registered EPFiGMS reference number and specific grievance.

That is a service target, not a guarantee that every technical, identity, or claim matter will be resolved within that period.
Phone, email, WhatsApp, and regional-office options
EPFO’s official Help page lists:
- Employee feedback: [email protected]
- Employer feedback: [email protected]
- Toll-free number shown on the Help page: 14470
The official passbook page separately displays 1800118005 as a help-desk/toll-free number. Because EPFO’s pages currently show both numbers in different contexts, verify the number displayed on the official EPFO page or the relevant service page before calling.
EPFO publishes regional-office WhatsApp helplines and jurisdictional office details on its Contact page. Use that page to find the applicable office rather than relying on an unverified number copied from social media.
What to do when a claim deadline is close
- Screenshot the error with the date and time visible where possible.
- Keep your UAN, PF account number, employer name, relevant documents, and any claim reference ready.
- Do not create duplicate claims just because the confirmation page failed to load.
- Check claim status before submitting again.
- File an EPFiGMS grievance immediately to create a written record.
- Contact the relevant EPFO office if the matter cannot be resolved online.
Do not assume that a technical failure automatically extends a statutory or employer deadline. That depends on a specific official notice or applicable rule.
Protect yourself from EPFO scams
EPFO warns that it does not ask members to disclose Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, OTPs, or passwords, or to make payments, through calls, messages, WhatsApp, or social-media contacts claiming to represent EPFO.
- Never share an OTP with a caller claiming to be from EPFO.
- Never pay someone who promises to unblock a claim or update KYC.
- Do not install a remote-control app at an agent’s request.
- Check that the domain is exactly
epfindia.gov.inbefore entering credentials. - Do not upload identity or bank documents to unofficial “EPFO help” websites.
If you have disclosed credentials or sent money, contact your bank immediately and report suspected cyber fraud through the appropriate Indian government or police channel.
When to wait, when to escalate, and when to visit an office

Visiting an EPFO office is generally unnecessary for a brief outage, but it may be appropriate for persistent identity, record, or claim issues after you have created an official grievance record.
