How these internships were selected
“Top” is an editorial judgment, not an official industry ranking. The order weighs AI research or engineering quality at 25%, education-level accessibility at 15%, mentorship and project ownership at 15%, technical breadth at 15%, career value at 15%, application clarity at 10%, and practical fit—including location and work authorization—at 5%.
#1 Best Overall
Internships are treated as tracks because a single employer may offer undergraduate, master’s, PhD, research, applied-science, software, and hardware roles with very different requirements.
1. Google DeepMind Student Researcher Program
Best for: Undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students seeking hands-on AI research.
The Google DeepMind Student Researcher Program covers relevant opportunities across Google’s AI ecosystem, including Google DeepMind, Google Research, Google Cloud, and other teams. The official program describes paid, in-person placements lasting 12–24 weeks, with a minimum commitment of four days per week.
Applicants must be enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program. The host team determines the location, start date, and detailed qualifications. Strong candidates usually show machine-learning coursework, research experience, substantial technical projects, or independent experimentation in areas such as deep learning, computer vision, natural-language processing, algorithms, or systems.
The cited BS/MS Student Researcher listing gave July 17, 2026 as an anticipated deadline and warned that the role could close earlier if projects filled. The program page and current listings are the authority for a future cycle: Google DeepMind Student Researcher Program and cited Google listing.
Trade-off: This is one of the strongest broad-access research routes, but it is not a beginner program. In-person attendance and team-specific constraints can exclude otherwise qualified applicants.
2. Google Research PhD Research Internships
Best for: PhD students with established research experience.
Google’s cited 2026 Research Intern listing covered machine learning, machine perception, data mining, natural-language understanding, privacy, optimization, and related areas. The paid, full-time placement was expected to last approximately 12–14 weeks and could involve experiments, prototypes, architectures, and open research problems.
The listing targeted students in the penultimate academic year of a PhD who would return to their degree program afterward. It required PhD enrollment in computer science or a related field, relevant programming experience—such as Python, Java, JavaScript, C, or C++—and experience in at least one related area. Research experience and contributions to research communities were preferred; publications can help, but the listing does not establish that a publication is universally mandatory.
The cited U.S. posting required applicants to be located in the United States for the internship. It listed February 27, 2026 as an anticipated deadline, with rolling review and the possibility of earlier closure. See the official Google Research Intern listing.
Trade-off: This is an excellent research-career option, but it is not a realistic general recommendation for most undergraduates or applicants without a research record.
3. Microsoft AI Applied Science Internships
Best for: Students who want applied AI connected to products and user experiences.
Microsoft’s 2026 Applied Science: Microsoft AI opportunity in Redmond framed the work around artificial intelligence and machine learning in product-oriented settings. Depending on the host group, projects may involve intelligent experiences, large-scale experimentation, generative AI, agentic systems, modeling, or evaluation.
Microsoft’s general internship rules say candidates generally must be enrolled full time in a relevant bachelor’s, master’s, MBA, or PhD program during the academic term immediately before the internship and return to school for at least one full academic term afterward. Interns generally cannot take classes while interning. The eligibility page also says Microsoft does not sponsor visas for interns, making work authorization a decisive issue for international applicants.
Review the Microsoft AI listings and Microsoft internship eligibility rules. Do not assume every Microsoft internship is an AI role or that all locations follow identical rules.

4. Microsoft Research AI/ML Internships
Best for: Candidates with a strong research profile in language modeling, reinforcement learning, multimodal AI, AI systems, or related areas.
Microsoft Research’s internship directory is better understood as a portfolio of projects than as one standardized program. The cited 2026 listings included self-improving AI, AI frontiers, language modeling, reinforcement learning, agentic AI, large language models, multimodal models, deep learning, AI systems, and AI for software engineering such as GitHub Copilot.
Applicants should identify the specific research question and tailor their résumé, statement, and project evidence accordingly. A candidate who can formulate hypotheses, run controlled experiments, explain limitations, and communicate results will generally fit better than someone presenting a generic list of AI frameworks.
Browse the Microsoft Research internship listings. Posts can appear throughout the year and may close when a project is filled.
Trade-off: The breadth is valuable, but “Microsoft Research” alone does not tell you what you will build. Project matching matters more than brand recognition.
5. NVIDIA Deep Learning Internships
Best for: Bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students interested in deep-learning infrastructure, computer vision, GPU computing, or model performance.
NVIDIA’s cited 2026 U.S. Deep Learning listing described hands-on work with a deep-learning team. It is especially relevant to candidates interested in the connection between algorithms, software, hardware, and accelerated computing—not just model experimentation in a notebook.

Relevant preparation may include Python, a deep-learning framework, C++ for systems-oriented roles, CUDA, computer vision, distributed training, neural networks, model optimization, and strong data structures and algorithms fundamentals.
See the NVIDIA Deep Learning internship listing.
Trade-off: NVIDIA is a strong fit for systems and accelerated AI, but applicants seeking only theoretical model research may prefer a research-lab track.
6. NVIDIA PhD Generative AI Research Internships
Best for: PhD students pursuing advanced generative-AI research.
The dedicated 2026 U.S. PhD Generative AI Research listing was more specialized and research-heavy than NVIDIA’s general Deep Learning internship. Potentially relevant experience included Python, C++, CUDA, PyTorch, JAX, and TensorFlow, alongside advanced work in generative models, foundation models, or deep-learning systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe cited listing required active PhD enrollment in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline throughout the internship. That requirement makes this a poor recommendation for a general undergraduate audience, even though the company’s broader deep-learning roles may be accessible to undergraduates.
Review the NVIDIA PhD Generative AI Research listing.
Trade-off: The specialization is attractive for frontier generative-AI work, but it sharply narrows eligibility.

Apple’s 2026 AIML listings included separate undergraduate, master’s, and PhD tracks. The cited roles covered large language models, diffusion models, reinforcement learning, speech, multimodal sensing, privacy, fairness, and accessibility.
The undergraduate listing required progress toward a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science, applied mathematics, or a related field. Students had to return to school after the internship or be completing their final graduation requirement. Practical knowledge of machine-learning algorithms was expected.
Work may include designing and implementing ML solutions, collaborating with researchers and engineers, exploring methods and evaluation protocols, contributing to publications, and presenting results to leadership. These outcomes depend on the individual team; Apple does not guarantee a publication or a particular project.

Trade-off: Apple is distinctive for integrated hardware/software and privacy-sensitive AI, but candidates must inspect the team and location rather than assume every AIML role involves open-ended model research.
8. Amazon Applied Science and Research Science Internships
Best for: Students who want to apply AI to large-scale production problems.
Amazon’s AI internship ecosystem spans Research Science and Applied Science roles involving recommendations, information retrieval, search, knowledge graphs, robotics, natural-language processing, speech, reinforcement learning, optimization, large language models, and production-scale ML systems.
The cited 2026 Fall Research Science internship targeted PhD students in computer science, machine learning, engineering, or related areas. Responsibilities included data analysis, prototype development, hypothesis testing, and work with large datasets. It required full-time availability and relocation to the internship location.

Other cited Applied Science postings covered recommender systems and information retrieval, frontier AI and robotics, NLP and speech, and reinforcement learning and optimization. One described a 40-hour-per-week, 12-week internship between May and September 2026. Requirements and degree levels varied by posting, so evaluate the exact role instead of treating “Amazon AI” as one job.
Compensation figures in Amazon listings are location-specific annualized or hourly ranges. They are not a universal Amazon internship rate. Review the Research Science listing and Amazon’s related Applied Science postings.
Trade-off: Amazon offers unusually broad applied-AI coverage and direct product impact, but research depth and day-to-day work vary substantially by team.

Undergraduate students
The most realistic options among these eight are Google DeepMind’s Student Researcher pathway, Apple’s undergraduate AIML internships, NVIDIA’s general Deep Learning roles, and selected Microsoft AI or Amazon applied-science postings. Build evidence through coursework, research assistance, open-source contributions, and serious end-to-end projects.
Master’s students
Consider Google DeepMind, Apple’s master’s roles, NVIDIA Deep Learning, Microsoft AI, selected Microsoft Research opportunities, and Amazon Applied Science. A master’s degree can support either an engineering-oriented or research-oriented application, but the résumé must make that direction clear.
PhD students
The strongest matches include Google Research, NVIDIA’s PhD Generative AI Research track, Microsoft Research, Amazon Research Science and Applied Science, Apple AIML PhD roles, and Google DeepMind. Research internships may value publications, but publications are not a universal requirement unless the specific posting says so.
Research, applied science, ML engineering, or software?
“AI internship” describes several different jobs:
- Research intern: Develops and tests novel ideas, sometimes with publication potential.
- Applied scientist intern: Uses research methods on product or business problems.
- ML engineer intern: Builds training systems, data pipelines, evaluation tools, or production models.
- Software engineer on an AI team: May build infrastructure without training models directly.
- Data science intern: Uses statistics and experimentation, sometimes without deep learning.
- Robotics or hardware AI intern: Works on perception, control, simulation, or accelerated computing.
Read the responsibilities and qualifications—not just the title. An internship mentioning AI may involve dashboards, labeling, cloud infrastructure, or general software development rather than model building.
Timing, location, and work authorization
Large-company summer internships can open months before the start date. Google’s cited 2026 PhD listing gave February 27, 2026 as an anticipated deadline and its BS/MS Student Researcher listing gave July 17, 2026; both warned that opportunities could close earlier if projects filled. Microsoft Research roles can appear throughout the year, while Amazon roles may be tied to a season, location, and research team. Apple’s cited 2026 AIML opportunities were posted in May 2026.
Do not assume internships are remote. Google DeepMind describes in-person placements, and the cited Google Research listing required U.S. location during the internship. Microsoft, NVIDIA, Apple, and Amazon requirements vary by posting.
International students must check the country-specific posting and work-authorization rules. Microsoft’s general policy says interns must already have the right to work in the country of application and that visas are not sponsored for interns. Other employers may follow different rules, but enrollment alone does not establish eligibility.
How to become a stronger applicant
Build two or three substantial projects
- End-to-end ML project: Show data curation, a baseline, evaluation, error analysis, and reproducible code.
- Research-style project: State a hypothesis, explain the literature context, run controlled experiments or ablations, and discuss limitations.
- Systems project: Demonstrate deployment, inference optimization, GPU or distributed training, monitoring, or latency and cost analysis.
Two well-explained projects are more persuasive than a collection of shallow tutorials. A project should make clear what you did, how you measured success, and what failed.

Prepare for the right interview
Engineering interviews may test data structures, algorithms, Python or C++, ML fundamentals, and system design. Research interviews may focus on your papers or projects, probability and statistics, experiment design, deep-learning architecture, hypothesis formation, and how you interpret ambiguous results. Behavioral interviews can test collaboration and communication. Research and ML-engineering preparation overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
Alternatives when elite internships are unavailable
Students can build comparable evidence through university research assistantships, national laboratories, startup internships, open-source ML contributions, benchmark replication, and carefully documented independent projects. These routes may provide more ownership than a brand-name internship and can be especially valuable for applicants without access to a conventional recruiting pipeline.
OpenAI’s Residency is another notable alternative for some nontraditional or self-taught candidates, but it is not an internship. OpenAI describes residents as full-time employees, and its FAQ says residents cannot remain actively enrolled in school while employed. The 2026 applications were closed at the cited research date. See OpenAI Emerging Talent and the Residency page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes to avoid
- Applying to a prestigious company without checking the actual team or degree requirement.
- Using one generic résumé for research, applied science, and engineering roles.
- Assuming publications are mandatory—or assuming projects alone satisfy every PhD research posting.
- Relying on expired job boards, social-media posts, or old visa guidance.
- Assuming a role is remote, paid at a particular rate, or likely to produce a return offer.
- Listing AI tools and frameworks without being able to explain the code, evaluation, and trade-offs.
Paid preparation tools can help with specific gaps, but they are not admissions advantages. Coding platforms such as LeetCode and HackerRank target interview practice; structured courses are available from DeepLearning.AI and Coursera. None replaces demonstrable work, and current prices should be checked directly with the provider.
