Check official local updates before leaving, postpone nonessential travel, and ask your employer about working from home or changing your hours. If you must travel, compare the options that are actually operating on your route, allow extra time, tell someone where you are going, and carry basic supplies. Fuel rules, transport availability and emergency measures vary by location, so use your own government and transport operator notices rather than assumptions from another country.
A station running out of petrol or diesel is a local service problem; it does not automatically mean that national rationing has begun. Treat the situation as a changing logistics problem, keep your decisions reversible, and conserve both fuel and cash until you know how long the disruption may last.

Start with the decision: do you need to make this trip?
Open your local government, road authority, fuel regulator and public-transport operator channels before setting out. Look for current station availability, road closures, queueing rules, cancelled services and advice for essential journeys. A social-media post or an old news report may describe conditions that have already changed.
Postpone or combine optional travel
If the journey is discretionary, delay it. Combine errands into one outing rather than making several separate trips. A delayed appointment, online meeting or consolidated shopping trip can remove a fuel purchase altogether. Do not drive to multiple stations simply to search for fuel unless an official notice confirms that doing so is appropriate; that can add distance and congestion while leaving you no better off.

Classify a work trip as essential only when it really is
Ask whether your attendance is required on that particular day and at that particular site. A commute may be necessary for a role that needs equipment, customers or on-site care, but another role may be performed remotely or moved to a different shift. The decision belongs with you and your employer, not with a headline about a shortage.
Make a safe commute plan in 15 minutes
- Check the latest status. Confirm fuel availability, road conditions and the operating status of each public-transport leg immediately before departure.
- Choose a primary and backup route. Check the complete door-to-door journey, including the walk at each end and any transfer between services.
- Allow extra time. Queues, reduced frequency, diversions and slower traffic can all extend the trip. UK Prepare’s transport-disruption guidance states: “If travel is essential, allow extra time for your journey and check the latest guidance and updates for your chosen mode of transport before setting off.”
- Tell someone your plan. Share your destination, route and expected arrival with a household member or colleague. Update them if the plan changes.
- Pack essentials. Take any medication you may need, a charged phone and charger, a portable power bank, water, food, and warm or waterproof clothing. A power bank can keep a phone available for updates; it cannot create fuel or reopen a closed service.
- Set a stop point. Decide in advance when you will turn back or switch to the backup option if a service is cancelled, a queue becomes unsafe or weather deteriorates.
Compare alternatives by the whole journey, not the headline price
Public transport, walking, cycling and shared rides are not equally available or suitable in every area. Compare the option on your specific route and for your own health, mobility, caring responsibilities and weather conditions.
| Option | Check before choosing it | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Public transport | Current service status, first and last departures, reduced frequency, transfers and station access | May be crowded, delayed or unavailable outside the main corridors; a missed connection can lengthen the trip |
| Walking | Safe, legal footways, lighting, distance, weather and whether you can carry what you need | Can be impractical for long distances, limited mobility, extreme temperatures or unsafe conditions |
| Cycling | Road and cycle-route conditions, secure parking, weather, visibility and your ability to carry equipment | Requires a usable bicycle and may not suit hazardous weather, heavy traffic or a long journey |
| Shared ride | Driver and passenger availability, pickup location, insurance arrangements and a reliable return plan | Depends on other people and can create a single point of failure if the driver cannot obtain fuel |
| Driving | Confirmed fuel access, a route that avoids closures, vehicle condition and a reserve for the return trip | Queues, congestion and uncertain refuelling can make the trip slower and more expensive than expected |
Accessibility is part of safety. If you need step-free access, refrigeration for medication, a support person or a predictable journey, check those requirements with the operator rather than assuming a route is usable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you must drive, reduce the risk of being stranded
Verify fuel before committing to the route
Use the latest official or operator information available in your area. Do not treat one open station as proof that fuel will remain available along the route. If you can buy fuel safely, take only what you need for the planned journey and an appropriate reserve; do not block access for emergency or essential users.
Plan a route with alternatives
Identify a safe place where you could stop, a public-transport connection near your destination and a person who could assist if your vehicle becomes unusable. Keep your phone charged, but remember that navigation and messaging still depend on network coverage and battery life.

Drive conservatively
Expect congestion near operating stations and obey police, transport staff and emergency-service instructions. Never enter a queue that blocks an intersection, emergency access or a pedestrian route. If you run low on fuel, move to a safe location rather than stopping in a live traffic lane. Call the relevant roadside or emergency service when there is an immediate danger.
Use public transport without relying on yesterday’s timetable
Check the operator’s own live status shortly before leaving and again before each transfer. Disruption can affect one line, a station, a bus replacement or the final connection even when the first leg is running. Save the information you need while you still have a connection, and carry the operator’s customer-service details.

A train or bus may take you close to work but not all the way. Confirm whether you can safely walk from the stop, use a permitted shared ride, or work from a nearby alternative site. If a service is suspended, follow staff instructions and use designated replacement transport rather than walking along restricted roadways or railway infrastructure.
Allow for waiting and weather
Take water, food and suitable clothing when delays could leave you outdoors. If you have a medical or accessibility need, carry the supplies and contact details that let you manage a longer wait. Tell your employer as soon as a delay makes your arrival uncertain; early notice is more useful than a promise based on an unreliable timetable.
Ask your employer for a specific adjustment
Do not send only “I cannot get in.” Explain the route problem, the alternatives you checked and the arrangement you are requesting. Employers may be able to offer flexibility, but no particular accommodation is guaranteed.

Options to propose
- Work from home for the affected day or for a defined period.
- Start or finish at a different time to avoid the worst disruption.
- Use a closer worksite or satellite office, if one exists.
- Share a ride with colleagues whose routes and schedules match.
- Swap an on-site day with a colleague, subject to operational and safety requirements.
Ask how the change will be recorded, how you should handle meetings or equipment, and what to do if the return journey is disrupted. Keep the discussion practical: state the expected travel time, the latest safe arrival time and the point at which you will stop travelling.

Business-continuity guidance from the UK describes durable planning steps, although that source was published in 2011 and does not describe current fuel conditions. A workplace can document how staff usually travel, identify realistic alternatives and test communications before an emergency.
Map travel dependencies
Record which teams depend on a car, a particular rail line, a school-run schedule or a single site. Collect only the information needed for planning and protect personal data. Identify roles that must be on site and roles that can be performed remotely.
Define practical fallback sites
Where available, a satellite office or another company location can reduce travel distance. Confirm beforehand that it has secure access, equipment, network capacity and a manager who can receive the team. A nominal alternative that cannot support the work is not a continuity plan.
Set communication rules
Tell staff which official updates to monitor, who approves remote work or shift changes, and how to report a failed journey. Provide a channel that remains usable if the normal office system is unavailable. Review the plan after each disruption and remove options that proved unsafe or unrealistic.

Manage the personal-finance impact
A disrupted commute can create extra fares, parking charges, meals away from home, replacement childcare or a last-minute overnight stay. Record those costs separately from normal commuting so you can see the effect and discuss any workplace reimbursement that may apply under your policy.
Set a short-term travel budget
Decide how much you can spend on alternative travel for the next few days. Prioritize a safe, reliable option over a series of speculative fuel trips. If you use a shared ride, agree in advance how costs will be divided. Keep receipts and note dates, routes and cancellations.
Do not assume reimbursement
Ask your employer or public authority what, if anything, is covered. A normal commute is often treated differently from an approved business journey, and emergency arrangements may have special rules. Obtain confirmation before committing to a costly alternative.
Protect cash access
Carry a payment method that works for the services you plan to use and a modest backup where safe. Check whether a transport operator accepts contactless payment, a mobile ticket or cash before you leave. Avoid buying more fuel, tickets or supplies than you can use during the disruption.
What severe national measures mean—and what they do not mean
The UK fuel emergency plan describes tools for a severe, widespread supply disruption, including prioritising fuel for critical services and potentially limiting retail purchases. Those are contingency measures considered by government; they are not automatic rules whenever an individual station runs dry, and they do not establish what another country will do.

For example, government advice issued in New South Wales during fuel-supply pressure has recommended considering public transport, working from home and reducing nonessential travel where possible. That is jurisdiction-specific advice. If you are elsewhere, check your own government’s notices for any purchase limits, priority access, identification requirements or designated service stations.
Scenario playbook
Your usual station is empty, but work is open
Stop searching randomly. Check official local updates, ask whether remote work or a later shift is possible, and compare a confirmed public-transport route with a safe shared ride. If none is reliable, tell your manager early and explain when you will reassess.
Your bus or train is cancelled after you leave
Move to a safe public area, check the operator’s current status and use the planned fallback. Tell your contact and employer the new expected arrival. Do not improvise a hazardous walk along a motorway, rail corridor or unlit road.
You are travelling with medication or a dependent person
Prioritise a route that protects access, warmth, shelter and communication rather than the shortest nominal journey. Carry essential medication and supplies, and tell a trusted person where you are going. If conditions become unsafe, stop and seek help instead of continuing to meet an arbitrary arrival time.
Your employer insists on attendance but the route is unsafe
Document the official warnings, cancelled services and alternatives you checked. Communicate the specific safety problem and request a workable adjustment. Follow emergency instructions and do not take an unsafe journey merely to avoid being late.
When to stop travelling
Turn back or seek assistance if authorities issue a travel warning, your vehicle cannot safely reach a place to refuel, a route becomes inaccessible, weather makes walking or cycling dangerous, or you lose the ability to communicate. Keep your contact informed. In an immediate emergency, use the emergency number for your location and follow responders’ directions.
