Before deciding to stay or move, compare the acquiring bank’s written notices and agreements with your current terms, verify how your deposits and loans will be handled, and test whether the new branch, ATM and digital-service network fits your routine.
This guide is for U.S. consumers. A bank merger is not the same as a bank failure, and no single timetable or set of changes applies to every transaction.

Start with the merger documents, not assumptions
The legal transaction may be announced months before systems are combined. Read every letter, email, statement message and updated agreement from both banks. Record the effective date, any later “conversion” weekend, and deadlines for responding. The documents should identify whether your deposit account, credit card, loan, safe-deposit box or other service is moving, and provide new payment or login instructions when relevant.

Do not assume that account numbers, debit cards, checks, interest rates, overdraft settings, online access or loan servicing will stay the same. A contract may allow certain rate or term changes when the bank provides the notice required by that contract and applicable law. Keep the notices with your account records so you can resolve a later dispute.

Merger versus failure
An ordinary merger combines institutions under a transaction approved by regulators and governed by the account and loan contracts. A bank failure is a separate resolution process; the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) may arrange a different transfer of deposits and contracts. Guidance for a healthy-bank merger should not be used to predict what happens in a failure.
Make one side-by-side inventory
Before shopping for another bank, write down what you have today and what the acquiring bank says you will have after conversion. Use the same period—such as one year of statements—when estimating costs. Include fees you actually paid, not just the advertised schedule.
| Area | Record from your current account | Verify for the post-merger account | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fees | Monthly, transaction, overdraft, returned-item, wire, stop-payment and out-of-network ATM charges | New schedule, waivers and trigger dates | What exact action avoids each fee, and when is the balance measured? |
| Terms and rates | Interest rate or APY, minimum balance, direct-deposit rule, transaction limit and overdraft setting | New rate, tier, limit and contractual change notice | Is the rate promotional, variable or recurring? What happens when a promotion ends? |
| Access | Branches and hours you use, ATM locations, mobile features and support channels | Continuing and closing locations, new app and service hours | Will remote check deposit, alerts, statements and two-factor login work on your devices? |
| Payments | Direct deposits, bill payees, automatic debits and recurring transfers | Whether routing, account or payee details change | Who sends replacement instructions, and by what date must you update them? |
| Credit and deposits | Loan servicer, payment address, maturity date and balances held at each bank | New servicer or address and combined insurance calculation | Does the original contract still govern, and where should the next payment go? |
Check fees, balances and account rules
Calculate the real annual cost
Add the monthly maintenance fee, per-transaction charges, overdraft and returned-payment fees, wire costs, paper-statement charges, check orders and ATM surcharges. Then subtract only waivers you can reliably meet. A “free” account that requires a balance you do not maintain can cost more than a paid account with fewer conditions.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises requesting a fee list and comparing it with other institutions. Ask the acquiring bank to identify every fee that changed because of the merger and the date each change takes effect. Check whether the bank uses a daily minimum balance, average balance or a particular statement-day balance for waivers.
Read rate and transaction conditions
Compare savings and certificate rates, checking interest, minimum opening or ongoing balances, direct-deposit requirements and monthly transaction limits. Distinguish a recurring rate from a one-time or limited promotion. Note whether the account can change tiers when your balance moves and whether excess withdrawals trigger a charge or account conversion.

For overdrafts, compare the bank’s opt-in choices, available-balance calculation, authorization holds and fees. Ask how pending card transactions, recurring debits and deposits are treated. Keep the written answer because an oral explanation may not match the final agreement.
Test branches, ATMs and digital service
Map the places you actually use
List the branch near home, work and places you regularly visit. Verify which locations will remain, their posted hours, drive-through or appointment options and whether cash, coin, notary or other services are available. A nearby branch that no longer offers the service you need may not be a practical replacement.

Check the acquiring bank’s ATM map for your normal routes. Confirm withdrawal limits, deposit capability, surcharge rules and the fee for using another network. If you travel, determine whether the merger changes the network that previously gave you fee-free access.
Verify the app and support channels
Read the conversion instructions for downloading or activating a new app, setting up two-factor authentication and re-enrolling biometric login. Test remote check deposit, alerts, card controls, statement retrieval, bill pay, secure messaging and the process for reporting fraud. Save statements before a platform change if the notice says older history will be unavailable.
Call customer service at the number on your card or statement and ask about conversion support, weekend outages and escalation for errors. Consider whether live telephone hours, secure messaging or in-person help match the way you handle urgent problems.

Recalculate FDIC deposit insurance
The FDIC’s general coverage is $250,000 per depositor, per account ownership category, at each FDIC-insured bank. The amount is not a blanket limit for every account you own; the result depends on the ownership category and the combined eligible deposits in that category.
Recommended Free Tools
Combine balances after the transaction
If you held deposits at both institutions, add the balances—including accrued interest—by ownership category at the surviving or assuming bank. Use the FDIC’s coverage resources or contact the bank when totals approach the limit. Ask for a written explanation if the bank’s account records show an ownership category you do not recognize.
Understand the merger grace period
In a qualifying merger, deposits transferred from the failed or acquired institution are generally insured separately from deposits you already held at the assuming bank for at least six months after the merger. That temporary separation does not mean you can ignore the long-term total: once the grace period ends, deposits may be combined for coverage purposes. Certificates of deposit can have additional timing rules, so read the specific notice before renewing, withdrawing or moving one.
Deposit insurance applies to eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank. It is not a guarantee that every financial product sold through a bank is insured. Verify the product type and ownership details rather than applying the $250,000 figure mechanically.
Protect loans, cards and automatic payments
Loans and credit cards
An acquired loan remains subject to its loan contract. Confirm the servicer’s name, payment address, electronic-payment instructions, due date, payoff-quote process and customer-service number. Continue making payments under the existing schedule unless the bank gives a valid written change. Check whether statements, autopay credentials or online access will be replaced.

For a credit card, compare the post-merger annual fee, rewards terms, APR, grace period, payment allocation and dispute process with your existing agreement. The FDIC says a bank may generally change deposit-account or credit-card rates or certain terms when the contract permits it and required advance notice is provided.
Direct deposits and recurring debits
Make a list of payroll, government benefits, subscriptions, utilities, insurance, rent, loan payments and transfers tied to the old routing or account number. Follow the bank’s written instructions on which items will migrate automatically and which require your action. Never rely on a general statement that “payments will continue” without checking the specific payee.
After any change, verify the first deposit and first withdrawal in the new account. Keep enough money to cover pending items and avoid closing an account while an employer, merchant or biller still has the old details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for branch closures and safe-deposit boxes
If a branch is closing, compare the replacement branch’s distance, hours, parking, accessibility, ATM and services with the location you use now. A relocation within the same neighborhood may follow different notice requirements than a closure.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a branch closure, the FDIC says customers generally receive mailed notice at least 90 days before the proposed closing date, and the notice is posted at the branch at least 30 days beforehand. Treat those as minimum notice rules, not a promise that every merger will follow the same schedule.

Ask specifically about a safe-deposit box: whether the box will move, whether you must sign a new agreement, the deadline to remove contents and how access works during the transition. Photograph or inventory contents privately, and keep the box key and agreement accessible while the branch is changing.
Compare the merged bank with realistic alternatives
The FDIC’s March 2024 consumer guidance puts the decision plainly: “Figure out what you want most from a bank, and then compare the benefits and costs of doing business at different institutions.” Use that approach rather than choosing solely because a merger is inconvenient or because another bank advertises a short promotion.
| Comparison axis | What to measure | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Annual fees after waivers, likely ATM charges, overdraft exposure and transaction costs | What will this account cost given my actual balance and habits? |
| Rates and terms | Ongoing rate, balance tiers, withdrawal limits, direct-deposit rules and change provisions | Will the account still fit after any introductory period? |
| Physical access | Branch locations, hours, services, ATM network and out-of-network fees | Can I obtain cash or in-person help where and when I need it? |
| Digital and human service | Mobile reliability, remote deposit, alerts, support hours and fraud assistance | Does the service work with my devices and preferred support channel? |
| Continuity | Deposit-insurance position, loan servicing, payment migration and statement history | How much work and transition risk will moving create? |
Give extra weight to a feature you cannot replace easily, such as a local branch, dependable cash deposits or a specialized payment arrangement. A marginally higher rate may not compensate for recurring fees or difficult access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you move, use an overlap period
Do not close the old account on the day you open a new one. A controlled overlap reduces rejected payments and gives you evidence if a conversion error occurs.
- Open and verify the replacement account. Confirm ownership, account type, routing number, online access, debit-card controls and the fee waiver requirements.
- Move incoming money. Submit new direct-deposit instructions to your employer or benefit payer and wait for a deposit to arrive successfully.
- Move recurring outgoing payments. Update utilities, insurance, subscriptions, rent, loan autopay, transfers and saved payment credentials. Record the effective date for each change.
- Leave a safe balance in the old account. Cover checks, card transactions, electronic debits and fees that have not posted. Do not assume a pending item has been canceled.
- Monitor both accounts. Review activity frequently through at least one full billing cycle and reconcile every expected deposit and withdrawal.
- Close only after transactions settle. Request written confirmation of closure and the final balance. Securely destroy unused checks and debit or ATM cards after the account is closed, as the FDIC recommends.
Warning signs that require a call
- A fee appears that is not in the notice or current schedule.
- A direct deposit, bill payment or transfer is missing, duplicated or rejected.
- A loan payment is directed to a new address without clear written instructions.
- Your online history, statements or tax documents disappear after conversion.
- The bank cannot explain how balances were assigned to ownership categories for insurance.
- A branch closes before the stated notice period or the replacement location lacks a service you were promised.
Save screenshots, statements, confirmation numbers and copies of correspondence. Contact the bank promptly through a verified channel and ask for a case number. If an account, loan or payment error remains unresolved, use the complaint and dispute process described in your account agreement and applicable federal or state consumer-protection rules.
Make the stay-or-switch decision
Stay when the post-merger fees, terms, access, technology and service still match your priorities and the transition work is manageable. Switch when a permanent fee increase, loss of essential access, unsuitable service or unacceptable insurance concentration outweighs the cost of moving. In either case, base the decision on the written post-merger terms and your own usage—not on the merger announcement alone.
