Marvell makes semiconductor building blocks for AI data centers, not complete data centers or ordinary networking equipment. Its portfolio covers the chips and packaged technologies that move data between accelerators, racks and sites; Ethernet, PCIe and CXL switching; optical and electrical interconnects; storage and memory controllers; security functions; and custom ASICs designed with individual customers. The clearest way to understand the portfolio is by the distance a connection must cover: scale-up inside a compute domain, scale-out across a data-center fabric, and scale-across between facilities.
Marvell’s role in an AI data center
Marvell Technology, Inc. is a semiconductor supplier. Data-center operators, system manufacturers, module makers and cloud companies use its chips, intellectual property and packaged components inside larger systems. Marvell generally does not sell an entire AI rack, a finished data-center switch for a household buyer, or a turnkey optical network. A Marvell component may be embedded in a switch, optical module, active cable, accelerator platform or storage system that another company assembles.

That distinction matters when interpreting phrases such as “AI networking.” A networking chip can determine how traffic is switched or how a signal is recovered, but it is only one part of the finished product. Marvell describes its own categories and capabilities; claims about market leadership, customer adoption, production volume or performance should therefore be read as company statements unless independently verified.

The three networking distances: scale-up, scale-out and scale-across

Marvell’s scale-up overview describes scale-up as “the connectivity that couples accelerators into a single compute domain within a rack today and, increasingly, across several.” In practical terms, this is the communication path used when processors need to exchange data with very low delay and coordinated memory or accelerator access. Scale-out is a larger fabric: it lets separate servers and racks participate in distributed training, inference and storage workflows. Scale-across extends that fabric between locations, where the optical reach and signal-processing requirements are different.
No single protocol has been established as the universal answer for scale-up. Marvell’s own material identifies PCIe, UALink, ESUN, Ethernet and NVLink-related approaches, while its 10-K says UALink and ESUN switches are still in development. The appropriate choice depends on bandwidth, latency, openness, system design and deployment readiness rather than on a single declared winner.
Interconnect: the components that keep high-speed signals usable
Interconnect is the physical and electrical/optical path that carries data. Marvell’s portfolio spans copper and fiber links, with different devices handling signal loss, noise, conversion and monitoring. A digital signal processor (DSP) conditions and processes a high-speed signal so it can travel over an electrical or optical link with acceptable integrity. The DSP is not the cable itself and not necessarily the finished transceiver; it is silicon inside a larger connection.

Short electrical links
- Active electrical cable (AEC) DSPs: silicon for active copper cables that regenerate or condition signals over links that would be difficult to run passively at high data rates.
- Active copper cable linear equalizers: devices that compensate for channel loss while preserving a simpler signal path.
- PCIe retimers: components that restore and retime PCI Express signals, helping extend or stabilize a PCIe connection between a host, accelerator or peripheral.
- Multiprotocol retimers: retimers designed to support more than one high-speed interconnect protocol, useful when a platform must accommodate different interfaces.
These products are infrastructure components. A system designer selects them according to channel length, connector losses, protocol requirements, power limits and the board or cable design; they are not generic accessories that can be substituted into any consumer PC.
Optical links inside and between systems
- PAM4 DSPs: signal-processing silicon for four-level pulse-amplitude modulation links used in high-speed optical and some electrical applications.
- Coherent and coherent-lite DSPs: processors for optical links that use more sophisticated modulation and receiver techniques, particularly where reach is longer or channel conditions are harder.
- Laser drivers and transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs): the driver launches an electrical signal into an optical source; the TIA converts the tiny current from a photodetector into a usable electrical signal.
- Silicon photonics and optical engines: technologies that integrate optical functions more closely with electronic circuitry or package them as a subsystem.
- Co-packaged optics and linear pluggable optics components: approaches that place optical functions near switching silicon or use lower-complexity pluggable modules, depending on the system architecture.
Marvell also lists electrical cable DSPs and optical components for active optical cables (AOCs). The right comparison is not simply “copper versus fiber.” Engineers weigh reach, bandwidth, power, thermal behavior, signal integrity, serviceability and whether the link is inside a rack, between racks or between sites.

Scale-out networking silicon for the data-center fabric
For scale-out, Marvell identifies a collection of parts rather than one product. PAM4 optical DSPs, coherent-lite DSPs, TIAs, drivers and optical engines can be used by module and system manufacturers to build optical links. AEC and AOC cable silicon serves shorter connections between servers, racks and switching equipment. Marvell’s RELIANT platform adds telemetry capabilities intended to give operators visibility into network behavior.
Teralynx is Marvell’s family of Ethernet switch silicon for data-center networking. “Switch silicon” means the core chip that examines packet headers and directs traffic through a switch system. It does not automatically mean a complete rack switch with a chassis, power supplies, fans, ports and management software available to an ordinary buyer. A finished switch maker or infrastructure provider may combine Teralynx with optics, firmware, a board and a system enclosure.

The chip may be inside a branded switch or a custom platform, while the optical DSP may be inside a pluggable module supplied by another manufacturer.
Scale-across: optical connections between data centers
Scale-across links separate facilities over campus, metropolitan or regional distances. Marvell names coherent DSPs, coherent-lite DSPs and COLORZ ZR/ZR+ pluggable modules for this role. These links must handle more fiber loss and dispersion than a short rack connection, so coherent processing and optical engineering become central.
On March 5, 2026, Marvell announced the COLORZ 1600 1.6T ZR/ZR+ pluggable, powered by its Electra 2nm coherent DSP, along with Libra, a 2nm 800G coherent DSP. Those are dated product announcements and specifications, not independent market-share or shipment statistics. Commercial availability and production scale should be confirmed from current supplier documentation before treating either announcement as broadly shipping.

ZR and ZR+ modules are intended to simplify deployment by putting coherent optical capability in a pluggable form. The practical trade-offs still include fiber route length, amplification, dispersion, power, connector and transceiver qualification, and whether the operator needs a campus, metro or longer regional reach.

Marvell’s broader portfolio includes PCIe and CXL switching in addition to Ethernet. PCIe is the familiar host-and-peripheral interconnect used by accelerators, storage and other devices. CXL builds on PCIe’s physical foundation while adding memory-oriented protocols and coherency features. A CXL switch can help create a fabric in which processors access pooled or expanded memory resources rather than relying only on directly attached memory.
Marvell describes Structera CXL switches for memory pooling. The value is architectural: memory can be allocated more flexibly among compute resources, which may improve utilization in workloads with changing capacity needs. The switch alone does not create a complete pooled-memory system; hosts, memory devices, firmware, operating-system support and platform validation are also required.
The company’s 2026 filing says its acquisition of XConn extended the switch portfolio with PCIe and CXL switches. It also says Marvell completed its previously announced acquisition of Celestial AI on February 2, 2026, adding Photonic Fabric technology. These corporate events expand Marvell’s technology base, but they should not be read as proof that every resulting product is already deployed at scale.
Custom silicon: co-designing an ASIC around one customer’s system
Merchant silicon is designed for use by a broad set of customers. Custom silicon is co-designed around a particular customer’s workload, interfaces, power envelope, software strategy and system roadmap. Marvell supplies reusable intellectual property, engineering and manufacturing coordination, while the customer supplies requirements that make the resulting ASIC specific to its architecture.

Marvell states in its 2026 Form 10-K: “We develop custom semiconductor solutions tailored to individual customer specifications that deliver system-level differentiation for next-generation artificial intelligence, data center, compute, networking, carrier, storage, aerospace and defense applications.” This is a description of the company’s business model, not a disclosure of a particular customer or deployment.
The custom-silicon capabilities Marvell identifies include:
- High-speed SerDes for moving data between chips and across board or package links.
- Arm compute subsystems for general-purpose or control processing.
- Security blocks, including root of trust, key management and cryptographic acceleration.
- Storage and networking functions tailored to a system’s data path.
- Silicon photonics and die-to-die links for short, high-bandwidth connections.
- Chiplets, custom high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced packaging.
Chiplets allow a complex design to be assembled from multiple dies rather than one monolithic die. Advanced packaging then becomes part of system performance, power and yield planning. Custom HBM integration can address an application’s memory-bandwidth and capacity requirements, but the final design depends on the customer’s package, supply chain and software choices.

AI infrastructure is more than accelerators and network cables. Marvell lists CXL switches for memory pooling, Bravera SSD controllers, Fibre Channel adapters and controllers, hard-disk-drive controllers and preamplifiers, and storage accelerators. These products support the movement and management of data even when they are not marketed exclusively for AI.
Storage controllers translate between host protocols and the media inside an SSD or hard drive. Fibre Channel adapters and controllers serve storage-area networks. HDD controllers and preamplifiers handle the specialized signaling needed by magnetic storage. Storage accelerators can offload data-path work from general-purpose processors. In an AI cluster, these components can affect data ingest, checkpointing, training-data access and recovery, but a listed storage product is not automatically an AI-only device.

Security functions are similarly foundational. A root of trust establishes a hardware basis for authenticating firmware and devices. Key-management and cryptographic-acceleration blocks help protect data and communications without requiring every operation to run on a general-purpose CPU. Marvell identifies these capabilities in its custom-silicon work; their exact implementation depends on the customer’s system and security requirements.
How to compare the approaches without declaring a winner

PCIe may be attractive where compatibility with existing hosts and devices is decisive. UALink and ESUN target scale-up networking designs but, according to Marvell’s 2026 filing, remain in development from Marvell’s perspective. Ethernet offers a broad data-center networking ecosystem and is central to Teralynx scale-out products. NVLink-related approaches appear in Marvell’s protocol landscape, but Marvell’s materials do not establish a market-wide adoption ranking. Operators must evaluate the complete platform, not just the switch or DSP name.
What Marvell does not provide to a typical consumer
This portfolio is a business-to-business semiconductor offering. The useful purchasing unit is normally a system design, a qualified module, a switch platform or a customer-specific engagement—not a standalone chip selected like a home router. Marvell does not identify a generally compatible retail product for a consumer who wants to build an AI data center from Marvell parts.
Generic Ethernet switches, fiber cables or optical accessories are not substitutes for the silicon described here. Compatibility depends on protocol, signaling rate, connector, firmware, optical budget, thermal design and system qualification. A financial reader evaluating Marvell should therefore view these products as components sold through infrastructure and design channels, rather than as a normal consumer hardware catalog.
How to read Marvell’s announcements and filings
- Identify the tier: determine whether the item targets scale-up, scale-out or scale-across.
- Identify the component: distinguish a DSP, retimer, switch ASIC, optical engine, module, controller or complete system.
- Check the status language: “offering” or “product” is different from “in development,” “announced” or “road map.”
- Keep the date attached: the COLORZ 1600, Electra and Libra details are from March 5, 2026, while the Celestial AI transaction closed on February 2, 2026.
- Separate company claims from independent evidence: Marvell’s descriptions establish what it says it makes and targets; they do not independently verify market share, customer adoption or performance leadership.
The practical takeaway for AI infrastructure readers
Marvell’s AI-data-center business is a stack of enabling technologies. At the shortest distances, retimers, active-cable DSPs and scale-up switch options help accelerators communicate. Across the data-center fabric, Teralynx Ethernet switch silicon, optical DSPs, drivers, TIAs, cable silicon and telemetry support scale-out. Between facilities, coherent DSPs and COLORZ modules address scale-across links. CXL and PCIe switches extend the architecture into memory and device fabrics, while storage controllers, security blocks and custom ASICs fill in system functions that are easy to overlook.
The central distinction is between a component roadmap and a finished deployment. Marvell’s 2026 filing confirms a current portfolio while identifying UALink and ESUN switches as in development. Its custom-silicon model is about co-design and system-level differentiation, not a one-size-fits-all chip. Reading the products by distance, role and maturity gives a more accurate picture than treating every Marvell announcement as a complete AI networking product.
