Uber drivers in Seattle must complete the Seattle City Knowledge Test and upload the certificate to their Uber account. The exam is a local for-hire requirement, and its required subject areas extend beyond street geography to include operating rules, vehicle safety, destinations, and driver safety. Uber directs drivers to its onboarding process for access to the test.

What is the Seattle City Knowledge Test for Uber drivers?

It is a required test for Uber drivers operating in Seattle under the city’s transportation network company (TNC) rules. Uber’s Seattle driver requirements page lists the test and instructs drivers to upload the certificate to their Uber account after completing it.

The City of Seattle says drivers must complete driver’s education and be tested before obtaining a for-hire driver’s permit. The test requirement is part of the local licensing process, not simply an optional navigation exercise.

What is on the Seattle Uber driver test?

Seattle’s official TNC driver guidance describes the subjects that TNC examinations must cover. It does not publish the specific questions on Uber’s live test.

  • Requirements and laws for operating a TNC-affiliated vehicle.
  • English speaking and reading ability sufficient to perform driver duties.
  • Vehicle safety requirements.
  • Geography of Seattle, King County, and the surrounding region.
  • Local public and tourist destinations and attractions.
  • Risks of crimes against drivers, emergency procedures, and personal safety equipment.

The City says the exam’s procedures and content must be approved by the director of the Department of Finance and Administrative Services. A street atlas or map may help you review the geography topic, but Seattle does not prescribe or endorse a particular study aid.

How do I take the Seattle City Knowledge Test?

  1. Sign up with Uber. King County’s TNC application guidance says the applicant signs up with a TNC first. The TNC submits the permit application to King County and makes its training and exam requirements available through its app or website.
  2. Open Uber’s current onboarding instructions. Follow the test access and completion directions in the Uber Driver app or on Uber’s local requirements page. Uber links to a live Seattle and King County test form, but its contents require JavaScript and do not provide a readable public description of the exam mechanics.
  3. Complete the test and upload the certificate. Uber says the certificate must be uploaded to your Uber account. Follow the app’s current instructions for how to provide it.
  4. Follow Uber’s permit and decal instructions. Uber’s local page describes its application-on-the-driver’s-behalf process for the TNC for-hire permit and vehicle decal. King County says the TNC communicates about the application and tells drivers when to collect the permit and decal. Confirm current collection directions with Uber before travelling; local office details and procedures can change.

How is this different from the King County taxi exam?

King County’s Taxi driver trainings and exam page says its training and exam materials are for taxi drivers; TNC drivers should contact their TNC for the required training and exam. The County describes its separate regional taxi exam as 40 questions, 45 minutes, with 80% required to pass. Those figures apply to the taxi exam only and do not establish the Seattle Uber test’s length, time limit, or passing score.

Uber’s defensive driving course is also distinct from the city knowledge test. Completing one does not, by itself, satisfy the other requirement.

What details about the Uber test are not publicly verified?

Seattle’s published rules establish required subject areas, but the publicly linked Uber form does not reveal its exam content in a readable format. The official material therefore does not establish the Uber test’s question count or format, time limit, passing score, retake policy, certificate delivery method, or language options and accommodations. Use the current directions in the Uber Driver app or contact Uber support rather than relying on taxi-exam details or informal accounts.
