Its proof-of-work design makes miners compete with specialized computers, and that competition currently requires a large amount of electricity. Cambridge’s 2025 industry estimate puts annual consumption at approximately 138 terawatt-hours (TWh) and electricity-related emissions at about 39.8 million metric tons of CO₂-equivalent (MtCO₂e).
Cambridge also estimated that 42.6% of surveyed electricity came from renewables and 9.8% from nuclear, while fossil fuels supplied 47.6%. A lower-carbon mix reduces climate emissions, but it does not eliminate water use, land and infrastructure impacts, hardware manufacturing, electronic waste, local air pollution, or the opportunity cost of electricity.

The fairest conclusion is neither “Bitcoin is destroying the planet” nor “Bitcoin runs on clean energy.” It is a large, variable and partly decarbonized system whose environmental burden depends on both its global scale and the location and operation of each mining site.

Bitcoin uses proof of work to secure its ledger. Miners run application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that perform enormous numbers of hash calculations, competing for the right to add the next block. The protocol adjusts mining difficulty so blocks continue to arrive at roughly predictable intervals.

Most of that electricity is not needed to process an individual payment. It is used to maintain competition for block production and network security. When Bitcoin’s price or mining revenue rises, more machines can become profitable and join the network. Efficiency improvements reduce the power used by each machine, but they do not guarantee lower total consumption because profitable mining can expand.
This makes energy demand a protocol-level consequence of proof of work, influenced by Bitcoin’s price, mining revenue, hardware efficiency, electricity prices and difficulty—not simply an inefficiency at one data center.
The best current electricity and emissions estimates
Cambridge’s 2025 Digital Mining Industry Report estimated:
| Measure | Estimate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Annual electricity consumption | Approximately 138 TWh | Modeled global estimate, not a worldwide meter reading |
| Share of global electricity | Approximately 0.5% | Based on the report’s estimate and global electricity context |
| Annual greenhouse-gas emissions | Approximately 39.8 MtCO₂e | Electricity-related estimate, not a complete life-cycle assessment |
| Renewables | 42.6% | Survey estimate |
| Nuclear | 9.8% | Low-carbon, but not renewable |
| Fossil fuels | 47.6% | Survey estimate |

The survey represented approximately 48% of global mining activity and was extrapolated to the wider network. Cambridge’s index provides lower-bound, best-estimate and upper-bound cases using assumptions about hardware, profitability, electricity prices and deployment. Its methodology explains why estimates can vary considerably by publication date and model.

Those figures should not be confused with electricity already consumed in a completed calendar year. A live annualized estimate changes as Bitcoin’s price, hardware fleet, geography and operating conditions change. Cambridge also revised its electricity methodology after finding that earlier assumptions could sometimes overestimate consumption. See the CBECI methodology and Cambridge’s explanation of its revision.
Bitcoin’s carbon footprint depends on the power source
One kilowatt-hour from a coal-heavy grid has a much larger climate impact than one from a low-carbon grid. That is why electricity use and emissions must be reported separately.
Cambridge’s greenhouse-gas index estimates emissions associated with mining electricity; it is not a full life-cycle study. It does not capture every possible mitigation or avoided-emissions claim, such as flare-gas use, behind-the-meter mining, waste-heat recovery or offsets. Its boundaries are described in the Cambridge GHG methodology.
What the reported energy mix does—and does not—show
The 42.6% renewable estimate does not mean every mining machine was powered by newly generated renewable electricity every hour. “Renewable-powered” might mean direct physical supply, a power-purchase agreement, annual matching or renewable-energy certificates. Those claims are not equivalent.
Nor does the global percentage determine the impact of a particular mine. A facility using existing surplus hydroelectricity can have a different marginal effect from one increasing demand on a coal- or gas-heavy grid. Hydropower also has ecological effects, including altered rivers, land disturbance and, in some reservoirs, methane emissions.

Four emissions categories to keep separate
- Operational emissions: pollution from the electricity miners consume.
- Embodied emissions: manufacturing ASICs, power systems, buildings and cooling equipment.
- Indirect system effects: additional generation, transmission, congestion or displaced electricity demand.
- Potential avoided emissions: effects claimed for flare-gas use, curtailed electricity or recovered heat.
These categories should not be added together unless they use compatible life-cycle boundaries.

Beyond carbon: water, land and hardware
Water
A United Nations University study modeled Bitcoin’s 2020–2021 water footprint at approximately 1.65 cubic kilometers, or 1.65 trillion liters. The figure includes water associated with electricity generation, not merely water piped into mining buildings. It varies with generation technology, cooling, climate and local water scarcity.
The number is a global modeled footprint for that historical period, not water consumed at one mine or a direct measure of scarcity. Hydropower can be low-carbon during operation while still carrying substantial water and river-system impacts. Sources: UNU overview and the peer-reviewed study.
Land and infrastructure
The same UNU assessment estimated more than 1,870 square kilometers of land footprint for 2020–2021. This is not simply the floor area of mining warehouses. It incorporates land associated with electricity generation and the broader energy system, including power plants, reservoirs, substations and transmission infrastructure.
Mining sites can also create noise and heat, while fossil-fuel generation and fuel extraction disturb land and habitats. A 2025 ACS life-cycle study found substantial geographic differences in carbon, water and land impacts, identifying the United States, China and Kazakhstan among major contributors under its modeling choices. See the ACS study.

ASIC manufacturing and electronic waste
Bitcoin mining requires purpose-built ASICs. Newer machines can make older units uneconomic when they deliver more hashes per unit of electricity. That creates short economic replacement cycles and material demand for semiconductors, metals, circuit boards and power supplies.
Machines may be resold, refurbished or recycled, but specialized designs can be difficult to process and older estimates depend heavily on assumed lifetimes and resale rates. A 2024 life-cycle analysis found that manufacturing impacts could account for as much as 80% of total impacts in some electricity scenarios. That is a scenario result, not a universal percentage. See the equipment life-cycle analysis.
The local costs global averages can hide
A mine can represent a small share of global emissions while imposing concentrated costs on nearby communities. A 2025 Nature Communications study examined fine-particle pollution associated with the expansion of U.S. Bitcoin mining and reported that the U.S. share of global operations rose from approximately 4.5% in 2020 to 37.8% by January 2022. The study assessed mine-attributable PM₂.₅ exposure and related health risks; its historical estimates should not be read as a current 2026 market share. See the study.
- Coal- and gas-fired plants can emit fine particles and other pollutants near host communities.
- Cooling fans and backup generators can create persistent noise.
- Large loads can contribute to congestion, reliability concerns or local price effects.
- Benefits and environmental burdens may fall on different groups.
Can renewable or stranded energy solve the problem?
Mining can sometimes use electricity that would otherwise be curtailed, remote power that cannot reach customers, or gas that would be flared. A flexible mine may also shut down during grid stress, and recovered heat can serve a nearby building, greenhouse or industrial process.

- Hourly generation, load and curtailment data.
- An enforceable interruptibility arrangement and records showing the mine actually curtails.
- The marginal electricity source, not merely the mine’s annual contractual mix.
- Whether mining caused new generation, transmission or a plant restart.
- For flare gas, methane and volatile-organic emissions before and after mining, plus the CO₂ produced by combustion.
- For waste heat, a nearby customer that uses the heat economically and continuously.
“Stranded” should describe demonstrated local conditions, not an assumption about an entire industry. Cambridge’s GHG methodology specifically excludes several potential mitigation activities, including flare-gas use, behind-the-meter mining, waste-heat recovery and offsets.
Why “energy per transaction” is a misleading headline
Mining energy is primarily determined by proof-of-work competition and block production, not by the number of transactions in a block. A nearly full block does not necessarily require proportionally more energy than a nearly empty one.
Dividing network electricity by transaction count produces an average allocation. It is not the marginal electricity required for one additional payment, and it can rise or fall sharply with transaction volume while mining power remains similar. Useful comparisons should specify the service, time period, geography and system boundary rather than compare Bitcoin with an undefined “banking system.”

How Bitcoin compares with alternatives
A fair comparison starts with a defined function: a card payment, bank transfer, remittance, store of value or settlement system. It should state whether buildings, employees, cash logistics, data centers, customer devices and security infrastructure are included, and whether the metric is per transaction, user, dollar settled or unit of monetary service.
Proof-of-stake networks generally avoid Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mining burden, but they are not automatically impact-free and may not offer the same censorship resistance, settlement model or accessibility. Second-layer systems such as the Lightning Network can move activity away from Bitcoin’s base layer, but that does not by itself remove the base layer’s security demand.
Is Bitcoin environmentally sustainable?
At the network level, Bitcoin does not meet the ordinary meaning of environmentally sustainable today. Its electricity demand, remaining fossil-fuel use, emissions, modeled water and land footprints, hardware turnover and local pollution are material.
Individual operations can be materially less damaging than others. A site using verifiable surplus low-carbon electricity, curtailing during scarcity, managing hardware responsibly and documenting local impacts may have a better profile than a mine increasing demand for coal generation. That site-specific distinction does not erase the network-wide incentive to consume electricity: if mining becomes more profitable, total demand can rise even as machines become more efficient.
Quick Recap
How to evaluate the next environmental claim
- Check the date. A 2020–2021 modeled footprint is not a 2026 measurement.
- Identify the metric. Electricity, CO₂e, water, land and e-waste answer different questions.
- Ask whether it is measured or modeled. Global mining activity cannot be directly metered, so assumptions matter.
- Separate average from marginal power. A renewable contract may not show what generation responds to the mine’s demand.
- Define “renewable.” Distinguish physical supply, hourly matching, annual matching and certificates; do not classify nuclear as renewable.
- Inspect life-cycle boundaries. Look for ASIC manufacturing, construction, cooling, transport and disposal.
- Demand evidence for avoided emissions. Check curtailment records, interruptibility, flare-gas measurements and heat customers.
- Look locally. Review noise, water stress, air pollution, grid reliability and electricity-price effects.
