A hardware wallet is a physical device that keeps cryptocurrency private keys isolated from a networked computer and signs transactions without revealing those keys. Your coins and tokens do not sit inside the device: they remain recorded on their blockchains. The device protects the private keys and recovery material that authorize spending.
Cold storage is the broader practice of keeping those credentials offline. A hardware wallet can provide cold storage while disconnected, but connecting it to an app for a transaction still leaves you exposed to phishing, deceptive addresses, malicious smart contracts and approval mistakes. The security benefit comes from isolating keys, not from making every transaction automatically safe.

What a hardware wallet actually protects
Blockchains record balances and transactions publicly. A wallet device does not download and hold those assets in a vault; it safeguards the cryptographic keys needed to prove that you may spend them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe device generates or imports a seed, derives the private keys associated with your accounts and keeps that key material in an isolated signing environment. A connected computer can prepare transaction data, but the hardware wallet performs the signature and returns the signed transaction without disclosing the private key. Ledger’s developer documentation summarizes the relationship this way: “The seed is the root of every private key the device will ever derive.”

Because the computer can still be compromised, review the recipient address, amount, network and any contract details on the device’s own screen before approving. A compromised host can display one thing in its software while presenting different data for you to sign.
Hardware wallet versus cold storage
| Term | Meaning | Typical exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware wallet | A physical signer that isolates private keys and approves transactions. | Keys remain isolated, but connected use can expose you to phishing, malicious transaction data and unsafe smart contracts. |
| Cold storage | A practice or state in which signing credentials stay offline except when needed. | Lower online exposure while disconnected; security still depends on backups, physical protection and careful procedures. |
Paper or metal backups, an air-gapped computer and a hardware signer can all be part of a cold-storage plan. “Cold” describes how credentials are kept, not a particular brand or device. Once you connect a signer to online applications, the transaction workflow is no longer risk-free even though the private key remains off the computer.
Where your recovery phrase fits
The secret recovery phrase is the master backup from which the wallet’s private keys are derived. Anyone who obtains it can restore the wallet on a compatible device and control the associated funds; losing it can make recovery impossible if the original device is unavailable.

Ledger’s security guidance states: “Never ever share your 24-word secret recovery phrase, also known as a seed phrase, in any form, with anyone.” Treat messages, websites and support agents that request it as scams. A legitimate support process should never need the phrase.
Generate and verify the backup safely
- Initialize the wallet on the device itself and let it generate the recovery phrase. Do not create the phrase on a phone or computer.
- Write the words down exactly as displayed, in the displayed order. Check spelling and numbering during the device’s verification procedure.
- Keep the written backup offline and physically protected. A durable metal seed-phrase plate can reduce the risk that fire, water or paper deterioration destroys the only copy.
- Never photograph, type, email or upload the phrase, and never store it in cloud notes, password fields or a computer file.
- Store the backup separately from the device when practical, with access limited to the people who must be able to recover the wallet.
Ledger’s documentation references BIP-39, whose English mnemonic list contains 2,048 words. The large combination space of a correctly generated 24-word phrase is not protection against phishing, theft, coercion or an exposed backup.
What happens if the device is lost or destroyed?
The blockchain does not know that a particular device has disappeared. If your recovery phrase remains secret and intact, you can restore the wallet on a compatible replacement device and regain control of the same on-chain accounts. The replacement process derives the same keys from the phrase.

If someone finds the device but does not know its PIN or recovery phrase, the device’s access controls may prevent immediate use; those controls are not a substitute for protecting the phrase. If the phrase has been copied, assume the wallet is compromised and move funds to a newly generated wallet whose phrase has never been exposed.
Can a hardware wallet be hacked?
Hardware isolation reduces the chance that malware on your everyday computer can extract private keys. It does not eliminate other attack paths:
- Phishing and fake support: an attacker can persuade you to reveal the recovery phrase or install counterfeit wallet software.
- Malicious transaction details: a user can approve a transfer to an altered address after failing to compare the device display with the intended destination.
- Smart-contract approvals: signing a deceptive contract can authorize spending or other actions even though the key never leaves the device.
- Physical theft or coercion: an attacker may obtain the device, PIN, backup or the person who controls them.
- Lost backups and human error: a missing, unreadable or incorrectly copied phrase can prevent recovery.
- Compromised host software: the computer or browser used to prepare a transaction may be infected and show misleading information.
CISA advises securing recovery keys and passwords because poorly protected device data can be accessed or stolen by cyber threat actors. A secure element or comparable isolation protects key material only when the surrounding wallet application and the user’s approval process do not expose it.

How to use a hardware wallet more safely
- Buy through an official channel and inspect the package. Avoid used devices or products with unexplained tampering.
- Install wallet software from the manufacturer’s official source. Confirm the application and device firmware are genuine before pairing.
- Create the wallet on the device. Do not accept a prewritten phrase or one supplied by another person.
- Complete the backup check. A device-generated verification is stronger than trusting your own transcription.
- Prepare transactions on the computer, then verify on the device. Check the full address where possible, the amount, network and contract operation.
- Disconnect when finished. Keeping the signer inactive between transactions reduces online exposure, although it does not replace backup and physical-security measures.
- Keep firmware and applications current through official procedures. Do not enter the recovery phrase into an update prompt or website.
How to choose a hardware wallet
No universal “most secure” brand is established by the available evidence. Compare the device and the operating habits it requires across these criteria:
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Key isolation | Does the architecture keep private keys on the device, and is its threat model documented? |
| Transaction verification | Can the screen clearly show the recipient, amount, network and contract data you need to inspect? |
| Recovery workflow | How is the phrase generated and verified? Can you restore to a compatible replacement? Does the system support a carefully designed multisignature setup? |
| Asset and software support | Does it support the networks and applications you actually use? Verify current support before purchase because it changes. |
| Operational fit | Can you protect the PIN, perform official updates and follow offline backup rules consistently? |
A current model such as the Ledger Nano S Plus is a physical signing option documented by its manufacturer. Model availability, firmware, supported assets and pricing can change, so verify those details immediately before buying. The device is not the critical secret; the recovery phrase is.

Common mistakes and fixes
- “The wallet app says the address is correct.” Compare the address on the hardware screen, not only on the computer. If they differ, cancel.
- “Support asked for my phrase.” Stop communicating and move funds if the phrase was disclosed. No legitimate support interaction requires it.
- “I saved the phrase in a password manager.” Treat a digital copy as exposed, create a new wallet offline and transfer funds after verifying the new backup.
- “I lost the device and have no backup.” There is no general blockchain reset that replaces the phrase. Recovery depends on having the original device or a valid backup.
- “The device is offline, so every approval is safe.” Reconnect only when needed and still inspect every transaction and contract permission.
