Those figures come from different studies and baskets: Bank of America Institute reported $1,122 in average annual sports spending from a 2024 consumer-spending study, while Ally Financial’s 2025 survey found $1,600 for the average fan and nearly $2,200 for fans who describe themselves as “fanatical.” Your own total can be much higher if you attend several games, travel, subscribe to multiple services or buy premium experiences.
What the major spending benchmarks actually measure
The headline numbers are useful starting points, not a single universal price tag. Each organization surveyed a different population and counted different expenses.

Do not average these figures together or convert Australian dollars into U.S. dollars without stating the exchange-rate date. The U.S. studies also differ: the Bank of America Institute estimate is a broad spending measure, whereas Ally’s figure comes from a fandom survey.
Where a fan’s money goes
1. Viewing subscriptions
Start with every recurring charge: cable or live-TV service, league passes and single-sport applications. Sports rights are fragmented, so following several leagues can require multiple subscriptions and seasonal sign-ups or cancellations. An AP-NORC poll of 1,182 U.S. adults conducted August 21–25, 2025 found that about four in ten people who follow sports very or extremely closely use both cable or satellite and a sports-only streaming platform. About six in ten in that closely following group use sports-only platforms.

List each service by month, then multiply only the months you actually keep it. Include annual plans, taxes and any equipment fee shown on your bill; otherwise your “sports” total will omit the largest recurring charges.
2. Tickets and the full cost of a game day
A ticket is only the admission line. Add parking, public transport or fuel, meals, drinks, flights and lodging when applicable. ING Australia’s A$408 average deliberately combines those items, which explains why a single live outing can rival several months of subscriptions. The survey’s fans attended about four live matches per season; four outings at that average would total A$1,632 before any separate streaming costs.

Ally’s 2025 survey found that tickets were the category most often cited as an overspending area, at 60%. Food and drink followed at 54%. Set a per-event limit before buying, and decide whether transportation and concessions come from the same envelope or separate categories.

3. Merchandise
Merchandise is discretionary, but repeated small purchases can create a large annual total. In PwC’s 2025 survey of 1,000 U.S. high-income fans—individual income above $200,000 or household income above $300,000—58% said they buy jerseys and 63% buy hats. Thirty-seven percent preferred online retailers. Team, league, authenticity and size all affect the price, so track the amount you actually pay rather than relying on a typical item price.

4. Hospitality and special events
Premium experiences form a separate tier from ordinary attendance. PwC reported that 60% of its affluent-fan sample would spend more than $250 on a special event. Nearly one quarter would spend more than $500 on hospitality that includes player meet-and-greets or autographs. Treat these as occasional sinking-fund goals, not as part of a routine game-day allowance.
How to compare your spending with the benchmarks
- Pull the last 12 months of transactions. Search bank and card statements for tickets, team stores, streaming, parking, travel, restaurants and sports equipment.
- Separate recurring and one-time costs. Put subscriptions in one list and games, trips, merchandise and hospitality in another so a one-off playoff trip does not disguise your normal monthly run rate.
- Assign every live event its complete cost. Record admission, transport, parking, lodging, food and drinks on the same event line.
- Create a merchandise envelope. Set an annual cap for jerseys, hats and other items; stop when the envelope is empty rather than shifting purchases to credit.
- Label your intensity. Compare yourself with Ally’s average-fan figure or its nearly $2,200 “fanatical” figure only after deciding which description fits your attendance, viewing and purchase habits.
- Keep currency and geography visible. Mark Australian amounts as A$ and U.S. amounts as $; do not present one country’s survey as a worldwide average.
A budgeting example using the published figures
Suppose an Australian fan attends four matches at ING’s reported A$408 average and keeps sports streaming for all 12 months at A$44 per month. The illustration totals A$2,166 (A$1,632 for outings plus A$534 for streaming), before merchandise or hospitality. It is a calculation from survey averages, not a forecast for every Australian fan.

For a U.S. household, use the same structure without importing Australian prices: add actual annual subscription bills, then the complete cost of each event, then a merchandise allowance and any planned premium experience. Compare the result with the $1,122 Bank of America Institute measure or the $1,600 Ally measure only with their differing definitions in mind.

Why the “average fan” can feel unlike you
Survey samples and spending baskets explain much of the gap. Ally’s $1,600 figure is a 2025 U.S. fandom survey and its nearly $2,200 figure describes self-identified fanatical fans. Bank of America Institute’s $1,122 comes from a separate 2024 consumer-spending study reported in 2025 and includes athletic equipment as well as game attendance. Neither establishes a worldwide average.

Ally head of consumer banking Lindsay Sacknoff described fandom as “identity, community and being part of something bigger,” while also advising fans to set a realistic budget so game day does not create financial stress. That distinction matters: emotional value may be high, but the cash cost still needs a limit.
