Tell your financial adviser about every cryptocurrency holding and transaction, then ask the adviser to evaluate it against your complete financial picture—not as a stand-alone bet. Bring an inventory of assets, debts, cash needs, goals, tax records, time horizon, experience, and ability to withstand losses. Ask what role (if any) crypto would serve, how a proposed exposure changes your portfolio, what it costs, how it is held, and what could go wrong. Do not accept a fixed percentage or recent performance as a universal answer.
This guide is U.S.-focused where it discusses adviser regulation and tax reporting. It is a conversation and decision framework, not a personal allocation recommendation.

Why your adviser needs to know about crypto
Cryptocurrency can affect more than an investment mix. It may change your liquidity, tax position, estate planning, account security, and exposure to platform or custody failures. An adviser cannot assess those effects if holdings are omitted because they sit on an exchange, in a self-directed account, in a wallet, inside a fund or exchange-traded product, or in an employer or retirement arrangement.
Disclosure does not commit you to buying, selling, or holding anything. It gives the adviser a complete set of facts for evaluating concentration, cash reserves, debt repayment, insurance, tax obligations, and goals such as a home purchase or retirement. The right outcome may be to keep an existing position, reduce it, avoid adding to it, or decide that the adviser cannot provide the service you need.

Prepare a one-page financial and crypto summary
Include your household financial picture
Before the meeting, write down information the adviser would need for any investment discussion:
- Income, employment or business interests, recurring expenses, emergency savings, debts, interest rates, and upcoming cash needs.
- Account types and balances, including taxable brokerage, retirement, education, trust, and bank accounts.
- Age, marital and tax status, dependents, insurance coverage, and estate-planning arrangements.
- Goals, dollar amounts if known, deadlines, and whether each goal is essential or flexible.
- Investment experience, prior losses, reactions to market declines, and the largest loss you could tolerate without abandoning a plan.
- Time horizon and liquidity requirements for each goal rather than one horizon for the whole household.
SEC staff guidance describes an investor profile as potentially including financial situation, investments, assets and debts, marital and tax status, age, time horizon, liquidity needs, risk tolerance, investment experience, objectives, and goals. You can use that list as a completeness check.
Inventory every digital-asset exposure
List the asset, quantity, account or wallet, and current U.S.-dollar value as of a stated date. Include direct tokens, funds or exchange-traded products, crypto held through a brokerage or retirement account, and any assets controlled through a business, trust, or other entity. Record whether you can trade, withdraw, or transfer the position and who has authority to do so.

Note wallets or platforms you can no longer access and any disputed or failed transactions. A complete list lets the adviser distinguish market exposure from operational or tax problems.
State what you want from the meeting
Write one or two decisions you need help with, such as whether a current holding conflicts with a near-term home purchase, how to reduce concentration, or how to coordinate a sale with taxes. Separate questions about advice from questions for a tax professional or attorney. This prevents a broad conversation from ending without an actionable next step.

Use a structured agenda in the meeting
Opening with facts and a decision request keeps the discussion specific. This sequence works whether you already own crypto or are considering a purchase:
- Describe the objective. Explain the goal, deadline, required amount, and what must remain liquid.
- Disclose the complete exposure. Provide the inventory of assets, accounts, wallets, transactions, rewards, and access issues.
- Ask whether crypto has a defined role. Have the adviser explain what problem the exposure is meant to solve and what would make it unnecessary.
- Test the portfolio effect. Ask how the position changes concentration, diversification, volatility, liquidity, and the likelihood of missing a goal.
- Examine the implementation. Identify the exact asset or claim, account type, custody arrangement, fees, trading process, and exit route.
- Separate tax and legal work. Ask what records the adviser needs, what the firm can monitor, and when a CPA or attorney should be involved.
- Document next steps. End with a written list of recommendations, assumptions, missing information, responsibilities, and a review date.
Ask what role crypto would play—and how much loss you can absorb
A useful adviser should connect any proposed amount to your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs, tax status, experience, and capacity for loss. Ask for the reasoning rather than a headline allocation rule:
- What role would this exposure serve in my plan?
- Which goal or risk is it intended to address?
- How would a severe decline affect each goal and our cash reserves?
- What amount could we lose without changing essential spending or abandoning the plan?
- How would you rebalance if the position became a larger share of the portfolio?
- What evidence supports this view, and what evidence would change it?
- What are the reasonable alternatives, including holding no crypto?
Investor.gov guidance says allocation should reflect time horizon and risk tolerance and cautions investors to consider how much of an overall portfolio to place in short-term investments. That principle does not produce a universal crypto percentage. A percentage that might be tolerable for one household can be incompatible with another household’s emergency fund, debt, tax bill, or imminent purchase.
Use scenarios instead of forecasts
Ask the adviser to walk through conditions that matter to your plan rather than predicting a price:
| Scenario | Question to ask | Portfolio issue to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Large price decline | Which goals, withdrawals, or debt payments would be affected? | Loss capacity, rebalancing discipline, and liquidity. |
| Rapid price increase | When would the position become concentrated, and what rule would govern a trim? | Tax cost, concentration, and whether a target range still fits. |
| Trading or withdrawal halt | How would we obtain cash if the provider or market became unavailable? | Emergency reserves, counterparty exposure, and backup access. |
| Lost credentials or a deceased owner | Who can lawfully recover or transfer the asset? | Access controls, estate documents, and operational continuity. |
| New tax or reporting requirement | What records would be needed and who would reconcile them? | Basis, transaction history, filing deadlines, and professional roles. |
Identify exactly what you would own
“Crypto” is not one exposure. A direct token, a fund or exchange-traded product, a brokerage position, and an asset in a self-controlled wallet can have different rights, fees, liquidity, tax records, and failure modes. Before discussing suitability, ask the adviser to name the exact asset, account, and legal or contractual claim.

| Comparison point | Questions for the adviser |
|---|---|
| Asset or claim | What do I legally own, and what rights or obligations come with it? |
| Custody and access | Who holds or controls the asset, keys, or account credentials? How are withdrawals authorized? |
| Fees and trading costs | What are management, custody, spread, network, transaction, account, and transfer costs? Which are recurring? |
| Liquidity and exit | When can I sell or transfer, what settlement applies, and what could delay access to cash? |
| Tax records | Who supplies transaction history, proceeds, basis information, and corrections, and what must I maintain? |
| Concentration | How does this position change exposure to one token, issuer, sector, platform, or correlated risk? |
| Operational and counterparty risk | What happens if a provider fails, freezes an account, suffers a breach, or loses records? |
| Ongoing service | Can you monitor, value, rebalance, and report on this holding, or is it outside your service? |
These questions are a comparison framework, not a ranking of products. If the adviser cannot explain an item for the specific asset and provider, treat that uncertainty as a decision factor rather than assuming ordinary brokerage protections apply.

Ask detailed custody and security questions
Custody protections depend on the asset, provider, account type, and contractual structure. Ask for a plain-language explanation tied to the exact arrangement:
- Who is the custodian or record holder?
- Are assets segregated, pooled, pledged, lent, or otherwise encumbered?
- Who controls private keys or withdrawal approvals, and how are backups handled?
- What identity checks, waiting periods, address whitelists, or multi-person approvals apply?
- What happens if you lose a device, forget credentials, become incapacitated, or die?
- What insurance, reimbursement policy, or legal remedy exists after theft or an operational failure, and what exclusions apply?
- Can the adviser see balances and transactions without taking control of your credentials?
- How are pricing, statements, and tax data produced when markets or a provider are unavailable?
Do not send private keys, seed phrases, one-time codes, or passwords to an adviser. Discuss access procedures and documentation separately from credentials. The CFP Board has said that a CFP® professional providing advice about cryptocurrency-related assets should proceed with caution and consider competence, fiduciary duty, client information, compliance with law, and technology selection and use. That guidance does not create one custody answer for every account.
Evaluate the adviser as carefully as the asset
An adviser’s title or a registration label does not by itself establish expertise, quality, or suitability. Ask the adviser and firm:
- Are you and the firm registered with the SEC, a state regulator, or FINRA where applicable?
- May I review your current Form ADV and relationship summary?
- What experience do you have with clients whose assets, goals, and tax situations resemble mine?
- What crypto-related assets can you advise on, monitor, value, or rebalance?
- Which services are excluded, and will you coordinate with my tax professional or attorney?
- How are you paid—asset-based fee, hourly fee, commission, transaction charge, or another method?
- Do compensation arrangements, product availability, custody relationships, or referral arrangements create conflicts?
- What disciplinary history or regulatory events should I review?
- Who is responsible when a holding cannot be priced, transferred, or reconciled?
Use official regulator and firm lookup resources to verify registration and disciplinary information, then read the Form ADV and relationship summary rather than relying on a verbal description. The SEC’s investor-education page encourages people to ask direct questions about investments, fees, experience, products, and services: Questions You Should Ask About Your Investments.

Organize tax records before discussing a transaction
In the United States, digital-asset activity can create reporting duties even when a platform does not provide a complete tax package. Preserve records for each receipt and disposition, including:
- Date and time, asset and units, wallet or account, and transaction identification where available.
- U.S.-dollar value at the relevant time and the source or method used to determine it.
- Cost basis, fees, acquisition method, and whether the asset was bought, received, exchanged, mined, staked, lent, gifted, or earned.
- Transfers between wallets or accounts you control, with evidence showing whether ownership changed.
- Sales, swaps, payments, gifts, rewards, and any basis or proceeds reported by a broker.
- Copies of statements, downloadable histories, confirmations, and correspondence about corrected or failed transactions.
The IRS says taxpayers must report digital-asset transactions as required whether or not they produce a taxable gain or loss and must retain sufficient records. Ask your adviser what information is needed for planning, then ask a tax professional how your particular facts should be reported, especially when activity spans multiple wallets, exchanges, years, entities, or jurisdictions.
Know what the dated Form 1099-DA rules do—and do not do
| Transaction timing | Reporting point described by the IRS guidance | Your practical question |
|---|---|---|
| On or after January 1, 2025 | For covered broker transactions, gross-proceeds reporting on Form 1099-DA begins. | Will the form cover every transaction, and how will missing or incorrect basis be handled? |
| On or after January 1, 2026 | Basis reporting applies to certain covered transactions. | Which transactions are covered, and what records still must I maintain? |
Broker reporting does not transfer responsibility for accurate returns to the broker. Reconcile statements with your own wallet and transaction history, and keep records when a platform supplies only partial information. Tax rules and administrative guidance can change, so confirm current requirements with the IRS and a qualified tax professional before filing or selling.
Separate advice, execution, tax, and legal responsibilities
At the end of the meeting, ask the adviser to identify what the firm will actually do. One firm may provide portfolio advice but not custody, trading, wallet recovery, tax preparation, or estate-law work. Another may be unable to monitor a self-directed wallet even while including its value in a financial plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Advice: the rationale, alternatives, assumptions, and portfolio effect.
- Execution: who places trades, transfers assets, or changes account settings.
- Custody: who holds assets and handles access, statements, and recovery.
- Tax: who reconciles basis and prepares or reviews returns.
- Legal and estate planning: who documents ownership, authority, beneficiaries, and incapacity procedures.
Ask for referrals when a matter falls outside the adviser’s competence, and clarify whether a referral creates compensation or another conflict.

Leave with a written decision record
Do not rely on memory after a technical conversation. Request a concise written follow-up containing:
- The decision under consideration and the goals it is intended to serve.
- The assets, accounts, wallets, values, debts, liquidity needs, and tax facts used in the analysis.
- The proposed action, alternatives considered—including no action—and the reasons for the recommendation.
- Assumptions about returns, volatility, liquidity, fees, taxes, custody, and access; identify any assumption that has not been verified.
- The parties responsible for advice, execution, custody, tax work, and legal work.
- Records or documents still missing, plus a deadline for supplying them.
- Triggers for review, such as a major goal change, a large price move that alters concentration, a provider or custody change, a new tax rule, or an access problem.
- The next meeting date and the decision that will be made then.
This record is a client-process tool, not a required universal form. It lets you check later whether the recommendation still fits the facts that supported it.
Recognize warning signs and recover from a poor conversation
Warning signs
- The adviser insists on a fixed crypto percentage without asking about goals, liquidity, taxes, experience, or loss capacity.
- Recent returns are presented as proof of suitability, or downside and exit conditions are dismissed.
- The adviser cannot identify the exact asset, custody arrangement, fees, or service limitations.
- You are pressured to transfer assets immediately, share credentials, waive questions, or use an unfamiliar provider.
- Compensation, conflicts, registration, Form ADV, or disciplinary history are treated as off-limits.
- The firm promises tax results or legal protections without reviewing your records and circumstances.
If answers are incomplete
- Pause any purchase, sale, transfer, or account change that you do not understand.
- Ask for the missing explanation in writing, including the source of any valuation, fee, or protection claim.
- Obtain an independent tax or legal opinion when the issue concerns filing, ownership, estate transfer, or a disputed transaction.
- Verify the adviser and firm through official regulator records and compare the written relationship terms with what you were told.
- Keep your own copies of statements and transaction histories; do not depend on a provider to preserve access forever.
A short script you can use
“I own or am considering these digital assets in these accounts and wallets. My goals are these, my cash needs are these, and this is the loss I could withstand without jeopardizing them. Please explain whether crypto has a defined role in my plan, how the exact exposure changes concentration and liquidity, what alternatives—including no crypto—you considered, all fees and conflicts, how custody and access work, and what records and tax professionals are needed. I would like the assumptions, responsibilities, and next review date in writing.”

Registration, adviser duties, custody protections, and tax reporting depend on the professional, firm, service, asset, and account structure. U.S. SEC and IRS guidance can change, and a rule for one type of broker or transaction may not apply to another. Recheck live official guidance before acting, and treat a registration check as one piece of due diligence—not proof that an adviser or investment is right for you.
