AI deflation is shorthand for a commercial risk: AI can let IT services providers deliver the same work with fewer labor hours, giving buyers leverage to push down prices or change how they pay. It does not mean the whole market is shrinking. Demand for AI-related services can grow at the same time that competition and pricing pressure intensify—and the effect on any provider’s margins depends on costs, contract terms, utilization and investment.
What does “AI deflation” mean in IT services?
Here, deflation refers to the price paid for a unit of service or the labor needed to produce a result. It is not the same as economy-wide consumer-price deflation or falling prices for AI models.

If AI tools reduce the effort required for a software project, support task or consulting deliverable, a buyer may expect to pay less for that work. But lower labor input does not automatically mean a lower contract price: the outcome depends on the agreement and the next negotiation. A provider might initially keep the productivity gain, share it with the buyer at renewal, or price the work around an agreed result.

Forrester’s Q2 2024 analysis described AI-enabled automation as a source of efficiency with a “deflationary impact” on service providers, and warned that providers tied to time-and-materials models may struggle. Forrester’s analysis is useful for the mechanism, but predates newer market evidence.

Will AI make IT services cheaper?
It can put downward pressure on prices, but there is no established industry-wide figure for how much AI has reduced IT services prices. Public evidence supports the existence of pricing pressure, not a comparable causal estimate that separates AI from competition, demand, labor costs and other market changes.
Demand and price pressure can coexist. ISG reported that global managed-services and cloud-based as-a-service contract value reached a record in Q2 2026, with AI-related cloud demand among the drivers. In the same update, ISG noted increased competition, pricing deflation and provider-funded AI transformation embedded in contracts. Its index covers commercial outsourcing contracts with annual contract value of at least $5 million, so it should not be read as a measure of every IT services engagement. How AI productivity affects common pricing models
The contract determines whether a provider, a buyer or both capture efficiency gains. The table is a framework for understanding the incentives, not a standardized comparison of realized margins by contract type.
| Contract model | How payment works | Where AI productivity pressure may appear | What to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time-and-materials | Payment for hours or effort consumed | Fewer hours can reduce billable revenue unless rates rise or additional work fills the gap. | Are rates fixed? How are AI tools and time savings treated? |
| Fixed price | An agreed fee for defined scope | If price, scope and quality stay stable while effort falls, the provider may keep the savings until competition or renewal changes the economics. | Can scope be measured? Who bears the cost of rework and delivery risk? |
| Outcome- or consumption-based | Payment for an agreed result or level of usage | Payment is tied more directly to results or usage than to headcount or hours. | How is the result measured, audited and attributed? Who funds the transformation? |
For buyers, the practical question is not simply whether a provider uses AI; it is whether the agreement defines the scope, quality, measurement and treatment of time saved. For providers, a shift away from billing primarily for labor can make it easier to sell the value of a result, but it also makes outcome measurement and delivery risk more important.

Can provider margins rise while prices fall?
Yes. A provider’s margin may improve if costs fall faster than prices; it may deteriorate if prices fall faster than costs, utilization weakens or investment rises. Productivity gains alone do not determine the result.
Company disclosures illustrate why it is risky to treat one provider’s results as an industry-wide AI effect:

- IBM, 2024 results: IBM reported a 3.2% year-over-year decline in Technology Consulting revenue in 2024. It described a context that included client reprioritization and spending constraints; the decline should not be attributed to AI alone. IBM’s financial results

What the evidence does—and does not—show
ISG’s Q2 2026 update reported a 43% year-over-year increase in combined global managed-services and cloud-based as-a-service contract value, reaching a record $42.4 billion. That measure covers contracts in ISG’s index with annual contract value of at least $5 million. ISG also described competitive pressure, pricing deflation and provider-funded AI transformation in contracts; its contract-value figure is not a price index and does not establish how much of the growth or pricing pressure AI caused.
