How to Evaluate IT Services Companies: Growth, Margins, and Deal Pipeline

Evaluate an IT services company by checking whether revenue growth is comparable, margins are improving on a consistent definition, and reported bookings or pipeline convert into revenue. Treat bookings, book-to-bill and backlog as demand indicators—not as guaranteed revenue—and compare each company’s definitions before drawing conclusions.

Start with comparable revenue growth

Use year-over-year revenue growth as the starting point, but distinguish reported growth from organic or constant-currency growth. Acquisitions, disposals and exchange rates can change reported revenue without reflecting underlying demand. State the comparison period and use the company’s reconciliation when available.

Wipro’s FY2026 Form 20-F illustrates why both measures matter: IT Services revenue rose 3.71% as reported but declined 1.6% on a constant-currency basis compared with FY2025. Neither number should be selected in isolation; the gap changes the interpretation of the result. Wipro FY2026 Form 20-F.

For a comparison, put reported growth beside organic or constant-currency growth where both are disclosed. Also check service and segment mix: consolidated growth can conceal different conditions in different business lines.

Read margins alongside their definitions and trend

Compare operating or segment margins over several periods, and keep GAAP and adjusted or non-GAAP figures separate. Before comparing peers, confirm the numerator, denominator, business segment and adjustments used. A higher margin alone does not prove stronger performance if revenue is contracting or the companies have different mixes.

Wipro reported IT Services operating profit equal to 17.22% of revenue for FY2026. The company describes utilization, workforce mix, pricing, automation and movement toward higher-value work as margin levers; these are management explanations and priorities, not independent evidence that the initiatives succeeded. Wipro FY2026 Form 20-F.

DXC’s FY2026 results release reports segment margins and separately identifies adjusted EBIT margin. That distinction is a reminder to avoid blending segment and consolidated measures or treating differently defined margins as directly comparable. DXC FY2026 results release.

Use bookings and book-to-bill as demand signals, not revenue forecasts

Bookings generally describe newly signed or adjusted work under a company’s methodology. Book-to-bill generally relates bookings to revenue over a stated period, but companies may define the numerator and handle scope changes differently. Review the company’s definition and several periods; a single large contract or quarter can distort the signal. Then look for evidence that bookings are converting into recognized revenue and margin.

Wipro defines large deals as deals with total contract value (TCV) of at least US$30 million. Its FY2026 large-deal order bookings, measured in TCV, were US$7,829 million versus US$5,368 million in FY2025, up 45.8%. Total order bookings were US$16,449 million versus US$14,315 million, up 14.9%. These are company-reported booking values, not revenue recognized in those periods. Wipro FY2026 Form 20-F.

ASGN says its consulting book-to-bill compares consulting bookings with related revenues for a specified period. It also explains that bookings rely on estimates and judgments, have no independent calculation standard, and do not assure future revenue. ASGN quarterly filing for the period ended June 30, 2026.

Test backlog quality and likely conversion

Backlog is not interchangeable across companies. Check what qualifies for inclusion and whether work is customer-authorized and funded. Look for an expected revenue-conversion window and disclosures about cancellation, scope changes and currency effects. A large backlog figure is less informative when the company does not explain timing or what may prevent conversion.

An SEC-filed 2025 annual report cautions that bookings and backlog methods may differ between companies. It also describes backlog as potentially subject to cancellation or modification, significant period-to-period variation and foreign-currency effects; short-term booking changes may not indicate a material trend. Treat these as reasons to inspect each company’s own disclosures, rather than as proof that any particular backlog will convert. SEC-filed 2025 annual report, Bookings and Backlog section.

Compare companies on a like-for-like basis

When assessing two or more providers, organize the comparison around definitions as well as headline figures:

  • Growth: reported and organic or constant-currency revenue growth, with the same comparison period.
  • Profitability: operating or segment margin using the same measure, plus the direction over multiple periods.
  • Demand indicators: bookings and book-to-bill over several periods, with each company’s calculation method noted.
  • Backlog: inclusion rules, expected conversion timing, and disclosed funding, cancellation and currency exposure.
  • Business mix: services and segments that may explain diverging growth or margin trends.

There is no universal public standard for company-reported bookings or book-to-bill in the cited disclosures, and no sector-wide average is established here. Use the Wipro, DXC and ASGN figures as company-specific examples of how to interpret disclosures, not as targets, benchmarks or investment recommendations.
