Western Digital’s (NASDAQ: WDC) three-month selloff reflects fears that new hard-disk-drive capacity will weaken pricing, not a collapse in recent results. A cited Wall Street target of $1,050 represents a 175.8% upside scenario from the reported $380.71 share price, but that outcome depends on supply remaining tight, hyperscale customers accepting higher prices and new drives launching on schedule.
What happened to Western Digital’s stock
WDC fell 32.4% over three months from a cited starting point of $563.14 to $380.71, even as the company delivered five consecutive earnings beats. The contrast explains why the stock now divides investors: operating results are improving, while the market is pricing in a possible downturn in the hard-drive cycle.

| Measure | Reported or guided figure | Investor significance |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal Q4 revenue | $3.75 billion | Shows continued demand for storage products. |
| Fiscal Q4 adjusted EPS | $3.56 versus a $3.29 estimate | Another quarterly beat, although a beat alone does not prevent a cyclical selloff. |
| Gross margin | Expanded from 43.9% to 54.4% during fiscal 2026 | Higher margins provide more earnings leverage if pricing holds. |
| Current-quarter gross-margin guidance | 55%–56% | Management expects further near-term improvement. |
| Q1 fiscal 2027 guidance | Approximately $4.10 billion of revenue and $4.00 EPS | Implies a strong start to the new fiscal year. |
| Pricing and costs | Price per terabyte up in the high teens year over year; cost per terabyte down about 8% | A widening spread between selling prices and unit costs supports profitability. |
These indicators support the bullish argument that WDC is benefiting from a favorable product mix and disciplined supply. They do not, however, prove that the favorable pricing environment will last.

How the 175% return scenario is calculated
A 26-analyst consensus target was reported at $668.50, implying 75.6% upside from the cited share price. Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes supplied the more aggressive $1,050 target, which implies 175.8% upside. The latter is a single analyst’s price objective, not an expected or promised return.
That target assumes a supply-constrained HDD market persists. It also assumes that artificial-intelligence and hyperscale data-center customers keep signing long-term agreements, accept higher prices per terabyte and adopt Western Digital’s higher-capacity products without material delays. A change in any of those assumptions could produce a much lower valuation.

Why AI storage is central to the bull case
Management estimates that roughly 80% of data stored in a hyperscale data center resides on HDDs. AI systems generate large volumes of data, but much of that information is stored on lower-cost, high-capacity disks rather than only on faster solid-state media. That gives HDD suppliers exposure to data-center expansion even when the stock market focuses on AI processors.

The biggest threat: a supply-driven price reversal
Toshiba reportedly plans to spend about ¥60 billion (approximately $380 million) to double HDD production capacity by fiscal 2027. If that capacity reaches the market as planned, additional supply could reduce price per terabyte, slow margin expansion and weaken the contract leverage that currently favors manufacturers.
This is the central contradiction in the $1,050 thesis: the target requires scarcity, while Toshiba’s investment is intended to reduce scarcity. Large hyperscale buyers are also concentrated customers with the bargaining power to push back on price increases. Even with strong demand, a few major purchasers negotiating harder can pressure industry margins.

How WDC compares with other storage stocks
Seagate declined alongside WDC as investors reacted to the same potential increase in HDD supply, making the issue an industry concern rather than a company-specific earnings miss. NetApp followed a different path: it rose 20.2% in one month and traded above its cited consensus target of $211.69. The comparison shows that investors are rewarding some forms of AI-storage exposure while discounting businesses most directly exposed to HDD pricing and capacity cycles.

WDC therefore offers more operating leverage to a favorable HDD market, but also more downside if supply expands faster than demand. NetApp’s relative performance should not be read as proof that its valuation or business risk is superior; it reflects a different product mix and the market’s changing preferences.

What could confirm or break the thesis
Signals supporting the bullish case
- Gross margin reaches or exceeds the 55%–56% near-term guidance.
- Price per terabyte continues to rise while cost per terabyte declines.
- Hyperscale customers commit to agreements covering the reported 2029–2031 period.
- The 40TB ePMR and 44TB HAMR launches proceed on schedule and command premium pricing.
- Toshiba’s added capacity arrives gradually enough that demand absorbs it.
Signals that would weaken it
- HDD pricing per terabyte flattens or falls as new capacity comes online.
- Gross-margin guidance is reduced or contract negotiations become more price-sensitive.
- AI-related data-center construction slows, reducing incremental storage demand.
- Higher-capacity products are delayed, have weak yields or fail to win customer qualification.
- Concentrated hyperscalers use their purchasing power to force lower prices.
Where an external hard drive fits—and where it does not
Western Digital’s G-DRIVE line is positioned as unified external storage for content creators and other creative professionals following the separation of the SanDisk Professional business. A Western Digital external hard drive can be relevant for local backups and large media libraries, but buying an external HDD is a hardware-use decision, not evidence that WDC stock will reach any analyst target. Product availability, pricing and any retailer promotion should be checked separately from the investment thesis.
Is WDC a buy after the selloff?
The selloff creates a potentially attractive entry point only for investors who can tolerate substantial cyclical and execution risk. The operating data support a recovery case, while Toshiba’s expansion and hyperscaler bargaining power make the downside case credible. The $668.50 consensus and $1,050 high target are scenarios based on analyst assumptions; neither substitutes for assessing position size, time horizon and the possibility of further losses.
