Verizon is no longer planning to buy Frontier. The companies announced the approximately $20 billion acquisition on September 5, 2024, and Verizon completed it on January 20, 2026. Frontier is now a Verizon company, but existing Frontier customers should not assume their service, bill, equipment, or account changed immediately.
The deal in brief
| Detail | What happened |
|---|---|
| Buyer | Verizon Communications |
| Target | Frontier Communications Parent |
| Structure | All-cash acquisition |
| Headline value | Approximately $20 billion in enterprise value |
| Shareholder consideration | $38.50 per Frontier share in cash |
| Announcement | September 5, 2024 |
| Closing | January 20, 2026 |
| Current status | Completed; Frontier is a Verizon company |
The $20 billion figure should not be interpreted as $20 billion paid entirely to Frontier shareholders. It was the announced enterprise value of the transaction, while the equity consideration was $38.50 in cash per Frontier share. Verizon also said Frontier’s existing debt was expected to be refinanced. Frontier’s transaction announcement and Verizon’s investor presentation provide the deal terms.

Why Verizon wanted Frontier
A larger fiber footprint
When the acquisition was announced, Frontier reported approximately 2.2 million fiber subscribers and a fiber network passing about 7.2 million locations across 25 states. Frontier had also invested about $4.1 billion in fiber upgrades and expansion over roughly four years.

Those figures describe different things. A fiber passing or location passed is a property that can potentially be served by the network; it is not necessarily an active paying customer. The 2.2 million subscriber figure refers to customers, while 7.2 million refers to network reach.

Frontier had planned to add another 2.8 million fiber locations by the end of 2026. That was a buildout target associated with the transaction, not proof that all of those locations have already been completed.
After closing, Verizon described the combined reach as approximately 30 million fiber passings across 31 states and Washington, D.C. That does not mean fiber is available at every address in those states. Eligibility remains address-specific.
More opportunities to bundle mobile and home internet
Verizon’s strategy is to sell more households both wireless service and home broadband. It also pointed to connected-home products, streaming services, and business connectivity as potential cross-selling opportunities.

Verizon said its internal analysis showed materially lower postpaid mobile churn among customers who also purchased home internet, including an approximately 50% improvement in churn performance for bundled customers. That is Verizon’s own strategic claim, not an independently verified result.
Complementary geography
Verizon’s traditional Fios footprint has been concentrated in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and selected markets. Frontier added fiber markets in other parts of the United States, giving Verizon access to more households without building every network from the ground up.

Projected cost savings
Verizon projected at least $500 million in annual run-rate operating cost synergies by the third year after closing. It also expected the transaction to become accretive to earnings per share beginning in 2027. These are management projections, not realized financial results or guaranteed customer savings.
What Frontier customers need to do now
For most existing residential customers, the immediate answer is: nothing solely because of the acquisition. Verizon’s current support guidance says:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Existing Frontier service continues as normal.
- Existing Frontier pricing does not change solely because ownership changed.
- Customers do not need to replace equipment or change plans solely because of the acquisition.
- Frontier accounts and billing remain available through existing systems for now.
- Future changes should be communicated in advance.
Frontier becoming a Verizon company does not automatically make every customer a Fios customer. Products, billing systems, portals, equipment, and customer-support channels may remain separate during integration.
Customers should still review the expiration date of any promotional rate, equipment lease, contract, or autopay arrangement. Those terms may have their own schedule and should not be confused with the acquisition.
Are bundle discounts automatic?
No. Verizon has introduced offers for some Frontier and Verizon customers, but eligibility depends on the address, plan, mobile account, and applicable terms.

Verizon’s support materials describe a $15-per-month discount on qualifying Frontier Fiber plans costing at least $20 per month when combined with qualifying Verizon mobile service. Taxes, fees, surcharges, optional services, and eligibility rules apply. A household should compare its total bill—not just the internet line item—before switching or adding mobile service.

What Verizon customers should expect
Verizon wireless customers may gain access to additional fiber choices in former Frontier markets. However, living within the combined 31-state footprint does not guarantee that a particular address is serviceable.

It gives Verizon a larger existing fiber platform and the opportunity to expand it. It does not guarantee that every customer will receive faster service, a lower price, or a network upgrade.

- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to keep up with a growing home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart home devices.

- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The most important distinction is between acquired network reach and new construction. Verizon acquired Frontier’s existing operations and stated plans, while future investment decisions will determine how much additional fiber is actually built. The 30 million passing figure is a network-availability measure, not a count of 30 million fiber subscribers.
What it means for prices and competition
Verizon argues that greater scale could support network investment, operating efficiencies, and mobile-home-internet discounts. Customers may benefit where the larger company adds fiber choices or uses bundling to reduce their combined bill.
The counterpoint is consolidation. In some local markets, Verizon’s purchase removes an independent broadband operator and may leave consumers with fewer major wired choices. Integration could also create billing or support friction, and projected cost savings do not automatically translate into lower prices.
The acquisition does not eliminate cable, fixed-wireless, satellite, or other local broadband competitors. Consumers should compare the providers available at their specific address, including alternatives such as AT&T Fiber, Spectrum, T-Mobile Home Internet, and Starlink where offered.
Regulatory timeline
- September 5, 2024: Verizon and Frontier announced the definitive all-cash agreement.
- November 2024: Frontier stockholders approved the transaction.
- May 16, 2025: The FCC Wireline Competition Bureau approved the transaction.
- January 15, 2026: California approval cleared the final identified regulatory path before closing.
- January 20, 2026: Verizon completed the acquisition and Frontier became a Verizon company.
The FCC approval document said the transaction would allow Verizon to upgrade and expand Frontier’s existing network in 25 states. The available materials do not establish every condition attached to every state approval, so customers should not assume that the deal created identical service, pricing, employment, or buildout obligations nationwide.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for customers
- Keep using your existing Frontier account and equipment unless Verizon or Frontier gives you different instructions.
- Check your bill for the scheduled end of any promotional rate.
- Confirm whether a proposed bundle applies to your exact address and current plan.
- Calculate the total cost after taxes, fees, surcharges, mobile lines, and lost promotions.
- Save notices about future billing, portal, equipment, or service changes.
- Compare local alternatives rather than relying on the state-level footprint.
