These rates come from the official HBO Max price-change notice. Some older Max-branded help pages still display the former prices, so those figures should not be treated as the latest rates.

When did the increase affect subscribers?
- October 21, 2025: the higher prices began for new subscribers.
- November 20, 2025, or later: existing monthly subscribers generally received the new price on the first applicable billing cycle.
- Annual subscribers: the higher price generally appeared when the annual plan renewed.
- Third-party subscribers: Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, cable, wireless, and internet providers may control the billing date and amount.
The official notice said the increase did not change plan features. The word “again” is fair in the broader sense because this followed earlier increases, including a 2024 increase to ad-free plans. But calling it a brand-new August 2026 hike is not supported by the reviewed first-party material.
Why your bill may have increased in 2026
A higher charge does not necessarily mean a new companywide price increase. Common explanations include:
- Annual renewal: an older rate remained in effect until your prepaid year ended.
- An expired promotion: an introductory or retention discount ended.
- A plan change: the account moved from Basic with Ads to Standard or Premium.
- A bundle change: you moved into or out of a Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max package.
- Provider billing: an app store, cable company, mobile carrier, or internet provider applied a different schedule or price.
- Taxes or fees: advertised prices exclude applicable taxes.
- An add-on or duplicate subscription: an extra-member charge or a second subscription may appear separately.
What each plan includes
Basic with Ads — $10.99 monthly or $109.99 annually
This is the lowest-cost option, but it includes advertising, supports two simultaneous streams, and offers 1080p video. The plan does not include offline downloads, according to the available plan comparison.

Standard — $18.49 monthly or $184.99 annually
Standard removes ads, supports two simultaneous streams, and includes 1080p video and up to 30 offline downloads. It also includes select live sports where available.
Premium — $22.99 monthly or $229.99 annually
Premium is ad-free, supports up to four simultaneous streams, allows up to 100 offline downloads, and offers 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos for supported content and equipment. 4K is limited to select titles, not the entire catalog.
Standard and Premium may include select live events such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and premier cycling. Neither plan is a universal replacement for a live-TV sports package.

Is annual billing cheaper?
Annual billing costs less than paying the monthly rate for 12 months:
- Basic: $131.88 at the monthly rate versus $109.99 annually.
- Standard: $221.88 monthly versus $184.99 annually.
- Premium: $275.88 monthly versus $229.99 annually.
That is roughly a 16% saving, but only if you expect to keep the service for the year. Monthly billing provides more flexibility if you watch only a few shows or plan to cancel between releases.
Could the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle save money?
If your household already pays for Disney+ and Hulu, compare the bundle rather than comparing HBO Max with nothing. The official bundle material reviewed lists $16.99 per month with ads and $29.99 per month without ads, but bundle prices can change and should be confirmed at checkout.

The trade-off is important: the bundle’s HBO Max component is not Premium. The official information says HBO Max Premium is unavailable through that bundle. It is therefore most useful for households that want all three services and do not need Premium’s 4K, four-stream, or larger-download allowances.

How to check whether your bill really changed
- Sign in to the HBO Max or Max account.
- Open the account or subscription section.
- Check the plan name, billing frequency, next billing date, renewal price, payment provider, promotions, and add-ons.
- Compare the receipt with the listed plan price, allowing for taxes.
- If the subscription is billed by Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, a television provider, or a wireless company, manage it through that provider.
Use the provider-specific guidance in the official billing and subscription help section. Do not start a second direct subscription while trying to fix a provider-billed account.

Should you keep, change, or cancel?
- Keep Basic with Ads if minimizing the recurring cost matters most and you accept ads, 1080p video, and no downloads.
- Choose Standard for ad-free viewing, offline downloads, and select included live sports without paying for Premium features.
- Choose Premium only if 4K on supported titles, Dolby Atmos, four streams, or the larger download limit is worth the extra cost.
- Use annual billing if you expect to stay subscribed for at least a year and can afford the upfront payment.
- Cancel or pause if you watch only one or two releases annually. Resubscribing for a specific show may cost less than paying year-round.
- Compare the bundle if you already pay separately for Disney+ and Hulu.
Depending on the account and billing arrangement, changing plans may require canceling, waiting for the current subscription to expire, and then resubscribing. It is not always an immediate one-click downgrade.
What the HBO Max name change means
Max is transitioning back to the HBO Max name in 2026. The company’s help information says the app, programming, plans, and pricing remain the same during the name change. A rebrand by itself does not explain a higher bill.
