VanEck has asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to withdraw its proposed registration for a Lido staked Ether exchange-traded fund, according to reports published October 14, 2026. The filing had not become effective, and the reports say no shares or other securities were issued or sold. The public record reviewed for this development does not state why VanEck sought withdrawal, and it does not show that the SEC rejected the application.
What happened
VanEck filed Form S-1 registration statement 333-290918 for the proposed VanEck Lido Staked Ethereum ETF on October 16, 2025. Reports from TokenPost and ETF.net dated October 14, 2026 said VanEck sought SEC consent to withdraw that registration before it became effective. Both reports described the fund as unlaunched and said no securities had been issued or sold.

A withdrawal request is therefore the current reported status. It is not evidence that the ETF traded, that investors bought shares, or that the SEC formally denied the registration. The available reports also do not identify a reason from VanEck for the request.

How the proposed ETF would have worked
The prospectus stated that the trust’s investment objective was “to reflect the performance of the price of stETH less the expenses of the Trust’s operations.” The trust would have held stETH, valued its holdings each day using the MarketVector Lido Staked Ethereum Benchmark Rate, and operated passively.

Exposure to stETH rather than ordinary ETH
stETH is a liquid staking token that represents deposited Ether together with associated staking rewards. Buying an ETF based on stETH would have given investors exposure to that token’s market price, not simply the spot price of unstaked Ether. The prospectus described no leverage and no derivatives strategy.
Trust parties and sponsor scale
VanEck Digital Assets, LLC was named sponsor and CSC Delaware Trust Company trustee. The filing reported approximately $128.64 billion in VanEck assets under management as of June 30, 2025. That figure was a company-reported amount for the stated date, not a measure of this proposed fund’s assets.

What the withdrawal means for investors
No shares to buy or redeem
Because the registration reportedly never became effective and no securities were issued or sold, there are no ETF shares from this proposal to hold, redeem, or sell. Investors who saw announcements about the filing should not treat them as evidence that a VanEck stETH fund is currently listed or available through a brokerage account.

The two October 14 reports do not give VanEck’s reason for seeking withdrawal. Possible explanations for any registration withdrawal can include changing market conditions, commercial decisions, regulatory strategy, or a decision to revise the product, but none of those explanations has been established for this case. The available information also does not establish a final SEC order rejecting the filing.

How this proposal differed from holding Ether directly
| Question | Proposed stETH ETF | Direct Ether holding |
|---|---|---|
| Asset exposure | Shares would have tracked stETH’s price, less trust expenses. | The holder owns Ether directly and receives the asset’s market exposure. |
| Staking component | The underlying stETH is designed to evidence deposited Ether and staking rewards; the prospectus used stETH performance as the benchmark. | Rewards depend on how and where the owner stakes Ether, if at all. |
| Custody and access | The trust structure would have placed the assets with service providers and offered brokerage-style shares if launched. | The owner controls custody through a wallet or a chosen custodian. |
| Trading status | This proposal reportedly never became effective and issued no securities. | Ether itself remains a separately traded cryptoasset; this comparison does not establish the availability of any particular product. |
| Fees and tracking | Returns would have been reduced by trust expenses and could have differed from stETH because of tracking and valuation effects. | There is no ETF expense ratio, but custody, network, trading, and staking costs may apply depending on the method used. |
Lido’s role and the scale it cited
Lido announced the filing on October 20, 2025. Kean Gilbert, head of institutional relations at the Lido Ecosystem Foundation, said the filing reflected recognition of liquid staking’s role in Ethereum infrastructure and that stETH could combine decentralization with institutional standards.
In that announcement, Lido said users had earned more than $2 billion in staking rewards and that the protocol had nearly $40 billion in total value locked. Those were Lido’s own figures at the time of the announcement; they should not be read as independently audited measurements.

What happens to stETH exposure now
The withdrawal does not change the operation of stETH itself. It only concerns VanEck’s proposed securities registration. Anyone evaluating stETH exposure must separately assess the token’s price risk, smart-contract and protocol risks, liquidity, custody, staking mechanics, tax treatment, and the difference between holding a liquid staking token and holding Ether directly.

A later amended filing, a new registration, or a final SEC action would be a separate development and would need its own confirmation.
