The UK economy grew by just 0.1% in August 2026, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Production increased 0.8%, but services recorded no growth and construction output fell 0.2%. The result followed growth of 0.4% in both June and July and shows why the latest monthly reading feels close to stagnation even though the wider three-month trend remains positive.

What happened to UK GDP in August?

ONS defines gross domestic product (GDP) as the value of goods and services produced in the UK. It is used to estimate the economy’s size and growth. The August estimate shows a much slower monthly expansion than in the previous two reported months.

Measure Latest result
Monthly GDP, August 2026 Up 0.1%
Monthly GDP, June 2026 Up 0.4%
Monthly GDP, July 2026 Up 0.4%
GDP over the three months to August Up 0.7%
GDP compared with August 2025 Up 2.1%

The monthly and three-month measures cover different periods and should not be treated as equivalent. The 0.1% figure describes only August. The 0.7% figure compares the latest three-month period with the preceding three-month period, so it includes growth built up earlier in the summer.

Which sectors drove the result?

Sector August 2026 Three months to August
Services No growth Up 0.9%
Production Up 0.8% Down 0.2%
Construction Down 0.2% Down 1.0%

Production provided the monthly lift

Production was the only sector to record clear growth in August, rising 0.8%. Manufacturing was the main contributor. However, production was still 0.2% lower across the three months to August, so the monthly increase does not yet represent a sustained sector-wide recovery.

Professional, scientific and technical activities, together with information and communication, were among the strongest service areas over that period.

These figures establish that construction output weakened; they do not by themselves prove a single cause such as interest rates, housing policy or government spending. The ONS release reports the movement in output rather than a definitive explanation for it.

Why can the economy be growing when August felt stagnant?

A monthly GDP increase of 0.1% means the economy produced slightly more in August than in July. It does not mean every sector expanded, nor that households or businesses experienced broadly stronger activity. Production growth was largely offset by flat services and falling construction.

The three-month result looks healthier because it captures services’ 0.9% increase accumulated across the period. This is why the economy can show 0.7% growth over three months while the latest individual month records almost no momentum.

How does this compare with a year earlier?

GDP in August 2026 was 2.1% higher than in August 2025. Over the three months to August, GDP was 1.8% higher year on year. Construction moved in the opposite direction, down 1.6% year on year over that three-month period.

Year-on-year growth provides a different perspective from both monthly and rolling three-month measures. It indicates that total output was above last year’s level, but it does not show how quickly activity changed during August itself or which sectors supplied that annual increase.

What should readers watch next?

  • Revisions to August GDP: ONS warns that early estimates can be revised in either direction as additional data become available.
  • Services activity: Services have supported the three-month expansion, so another flat monthly reading would test how durable that support is.
  • Construction output: A fifth consecutive monthly fall would indicate that the recent weakness is continuing, while a recovery in private-housing new work would remove the largest August drag.
  • Production: The 0.8% August increase needs to be sustained to reverse production’s 0.2% three-month decline.
  • Real-time indicators: ONS reported that electricity and gas wholesale prices remained more than double their levels a year earlier and that consumer-demand indicators weakened in September 2026. These are context for current conditions, not proof that they caused August’s GDP result.

What the figures mean for households

For households, the release points to a slowly expanding economy rather than a broad-based surge. Total GDP was higher than a year earlier, but the latest month brought no services growth and another construction decline. That combination can leave employment, business activity and consumer confidence feeling uneven even while the headline economy remains technically in growth.
