If airfare falls after you book, you may be able to rebook and keep the difference as airline credit—but a lower price alone does not guarantee a refund or credit. The result depends on your ticket’s rules, where you booked, and whether the lower fare is still available. Google Flights can track prices before you buy; its separate Price guarantee applies only to selected, badge-marked itineraries. Going Price Drop monitors some existing bookings and tells eligible members how to rebook, but does not make the change for them.
Which tools can help when a flight price drops?
| Tool | When it monitors | What happens after a drop | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Flights price tracking | Before purchase; you can track selected flights or routes, including “Any dates” for flexible route tracking | Sends email updates about significant price changes. You must act on the fare yourself. | It does not reprice an existing ticket or provide a credit. Google’s tracking guidance. |
| Google Flights Price guarantee | After booking a select itinerary that displayed the Price guarantee badge | Google monitors the exact itinerary. If the qualifying price difference is greater than $5, Google says it can pay the difference through Google Pay after you confirm the booking. | It is a pilot for selected itineraries, requires an exact match, and is capped at $500 per Google Account per calendar year. Google’s Price guarantee terms. |
| Going Price Drop | After submitting an eligible booked fare; monitoring is described as daily through departure | Alerts you and provides rebooking instructions. You make the change; Going says it does not rebook for you. | Included with Premium and Elite memberships. Eligible trip types and airlines are described differently across Going’s FAQ and launch announcement, so check the current product. Going’s FAQ and launch announcement. |
These options do different jobs. A regular Google Flights alert can help you decide when to buy, but it is not a post-booking benefit. Google’s Price guarantee is a limited payment program, not a general promise that every ticket will be repriced. Going Price Drop is designed for some booked fares, but the airline’s rules determine whether a lower fare can actually be claimed.

How Google Flights tracking and its Price guarantee differ
Price tracking: watch fares before you book
Google Flights lets you track a selected flight or route and receive email notifications when prices change significantly. For “Any dates” route tracking, Google says an alert is triggered when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month. Tracking helps you spot a fare; it does not apply the lower fare to a ticket you already bought.

Google describes Price guarantee as a pilot for selected itineraries found on Google Flights and booked with an airline or travel agency. The itinerary must match the guaranteed one, including airline, flight number, dates, passenger count, fare, cabin, and cancellation policy. Google monitors until the first flight departs. If the qualifying difference is more than $5, Google says the payment is made through Google Pay after you confirm the booking, up to $500 total per account per calendar year. Check the itinerary and the current program terms before relying on it; most tracked fares do not thereby become guaranteed fares.

What Going Price Drop does—and who may qualify
Going says Price Drop is included with Premium and Elite memberships. Members submit a booked fare for monitoring; when the service finds a lower eligible fare, it sends instructions for rebooking. It does not change the ticket for you. Going’s FAQ describes support for one-way and round-trip cash fares booked with a single airline, while excluding multi-city trips, points or miles bookings, and some airlines. Its September 23, 2026 announcement describes round-trip cash fares and excludes low-cost carriers. Because these descriptions differ, eligibility may depend on the current rollout; check the app or current FAQ for your specific booking.
Going says it monitors eligible fares daily through departure. Its announcement says Price Drop alerts at a 10% price reduction and allows members to monitor up to five flights; treat those as company-stated product details, not a guarantee that every lower fare will be found or that a member will recover a particular amount. The same announcement reports savings of “around $150 per ticket” among users who found a lower fare through the feature. That is a company-reported figure, not a typical or guaranteed saving for all travelers.

Will the lower fare become cash or airline credit?
Often, a successful voluntary rebooking returns the difference as airline credit rather than cash. Going’s current guidance says many qualifying rebooks result in future travel credit, but the exact outcome depends on the carrier’s rules and your ticket. Cash refunds are generally tied to refundable fares or specific exceptions; a price drop by itself does not create a general right to a cash refund.
Fare restrictions, change or cancellation charges, and the booking channel can erase the apparent savings or prevent a change. Basic economy fares are often more restrictive. If you booked through an online travel agency, that agency may control changes even when the airline operates the flight. Going’s U.S. airline rules guide, current as of September 2026, summarizes carrier policies, but it is a vendor-authored overview—not a substitute for the current rules for your exact fare. Confirm the terms with the airline or original booking provider before changing anything.

How to check whether a fare drop is worth claiming
- Identify the ticket. Find the airline, confirmation and ticket number, fare family, booking channel, and whether you paid cash or used points. If an agency issued the booking, check whether changes must go through it.
- Compare the same itinerary. Confirm the lower fare is still available for the relevant dates and flights. For Google’s guarantee, all required itinerary details must match the guaranteed booking.
- Work out the net value. Subtract any change or cancellation charges from the fare difference. Also consider whether rebooking would cost you a seat selection, baggage allowance, priority benefit, or other fare condition.
- Use a monitor suited to the timing. For a trip you have not booked, Google Flights tracking can send advance alerts. For a booked trip, Google’s guarantee matters only if your itinerary had the badge; Going Price Drop is a paid-membership option for supported bookings.
- Confirm the replacement and credit terms before canceling. Do not release the existing ticket until you understand the airline’s procedure and how any residual value will be returned. Going’s current policy guide advises booking a new fare before canceling an eligible booking within the 24-hour window; verify the applicable rule and timing for your booking rather than assuming that advice applies to every itinerary.
What a fare alert can—and cannot—promise
A lower displayed price is only useful if it is available for a comparable itinerary and your ticket can be changed under its current rules. Price alerts provide information, not an entitlement. Even when a tool identifies a drop, the airline or booking provider controls the transaction and the form of any returned value.
Going reports that 95% of surveyed members worried about booking at the right time to get the best price. Its member survey ran from August 27, 2025, through April 25, 2026; the result describes Going members, not travelers generally. It does not establish how likely an individual traveler is to recover money or credit.
