Engadget described the $274 offer as the lowest price it had tracked, not a universally verified all-retailer record. The exact configuration mattered: this was the 2025 base iPad with an A16 chip, 128GB of storage and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Engadget’s primary deal report and its related version were published November 28–29, 2025. If you are evaluating a later promotion, verify the retailer’s live price rather than relying on the historical headline.

The base iPad is inexpensive by Apple’s standards, but it is not simply a low-powered streaming tablet. Apple’s specifications give it enough capability for browsing, streaming, schoolwork, note-taking, video calls, light photo editing and casual games.

Apple lists the technical specifications on its iPad (A16) support page and full specifications page. The battery figure is Apple’s controlled estimate, not a guarantee for gaming, high-brightness use or cellular models.
Who should buy it
The deal made the most sense for someone who wanted a new iPad at the lowest possible entry price and did not need premium hardware. It was a strong fit for:

The 128GB starting capacity was particularly important. Some older base iPads began at 64GB, which can become restrictive once apps, photos and downloaded video accumulate. The A16 also provides more performance headroom than older entry-level iPad models, although that does not make it a professional workstation.
Who should skip it
Choose another iPad if you need a feature the A16 model does not provide:
- Apple Pencil Pro: The iPad A16 supports Apple Pencil USB-C and first-generation Apple Pencil, not Apple Pencil Pro.
- Premium display quality: It lacks features such as a laminated display, ProMotion, OLED or mini-LED.
- Professional creative performance: Demanding editing, advanced multitasking and desktop-replacement workloads are better suited to an iPad Air or iPad Pro.
- Faster connectivity: It does not offer Thunderbolt or the faster USB performance found on higher-end models.
- Cellular service: The discounted deal was for Wi-Fi hardware. Do not assume cellular connectivity is included.
An iPad Air is the better choice for demanding multitasking, creative applications and greater performance headroom, but its higher price makes the base iPad more sensible for ordinary household and school use. A historical Black Friday comparison cited an 11-inch iPad Air M3 at $449; that was also a dated promotion, not a current price.

Apple Pencil
The iPad A16 supports the Apple Pencil USB-C, which is the straightforward option for notes, markup and casual drawing. It also supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, but that model requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter for pairing and charging. Apple Pencil Pro is not compatible.
Keyboard
Apple’s Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad (A16) is compatible, but its listed U.S. price was $249. At a historical tablet price of $274, the keyboard could cost almost as much as the iPad itself. If typing is your main use, compare the combined tablet-and-keyboard cost with an iPad Air or a conventional laptop before buying.

Apple’s Certified Refurbished store listed a 128GB Wi-Fi iPad A16 at $299 when observed. Apple says its refurbished products include a new battery and outer shell, accessories, manuals and the same one-year warranty as a new iPad. That is a credible alternative when a new unit is unavailable, but it was not a better value than a new iPad at the historical $274–$279 price.

How to check a replacement deal
- Confirm the title identifies the iPad (A16), not merely an “11-inch iPad.”
- Verify that the configuration is 128GB and Wi-Fi, unless you specifically want cellular service.
- Check that the item is new rather than renewed, refurbished or open-box.
- Review the seller shown at checkout, especially on a marketplace listing.
- Confirm that the price does not require a coupon, membership, trade-in or bundle.
- Check the return policy and delivery date.
- Compare the final price after sales tax.
- Make sure the price has not changed between the deal article and checkout.
Bottom line
The Black Friday 2025 iPad A16 promotion was compelling because it combined Apple’s modern entry-level hardware with a practical 128GB starting capacity at a historically low tracked price. At roughly $274–$279, it was an excellent fit for everyday tablet users. It was not the right choice for buyers who wanted Apple Pencil Pro, a premium display, cellular service, professional performance or a laptop replacement.
Since the Amazon promotion was from November 2025, treat the deal as a historical price record unless a retailer confirms a new offer. If a replacement price is materially higher, compare the total cost—including accessories—and consider an Apple-refurbished iPad A16 or iPad Air instead.
